Well just today my parents decided to start bitching about what kind of music i listen to. i was on my computer listening to confined by as i lay dying and my dad starts freaking out.
He says i dont want that kind of music in my house.
I dont only listen to metal and other hard core stuff but i also listen to punk.
My favorite bands include misfits, cheap sex, casualties, action, anti-flag... etc etc
but i also like as i lay dying, slipknot and stuff.... but also the sissy stuff like fall out boy or blink 182 or green day.
What should i do? i wanto to be able to listen to whatever the hell i want.

first off get an MP3 player and some headphones.
second off i think its less of the music thats scaring them and more of the hype those bands try to build around themselves with names like that.
but ur paretns probably just decided you cant listen to it because they saw the album covers.....

yes get an ipod mini or any other small MP3 player and just put all songs on that and hide it.

Unless your parents are complete pricks I wouldn't advise the profanity route. And it's hard to judge who's parents are that bad, because most of us think our parents are too strict at some point in our teenage years. I'd start off trying to be reasonable, trying to find a middle ground. Explain to them that the music is not warping you, that you're not worshiping the devil because of it, and that it's just what you enjoy. Unless you are actually doing any of those things, then you'll need a new approach. Try to see it from your parent's perspective. What is the vilest, most disgusting music genre you can think of, for you? Now imagine someone you care about leaping head over heels for it.

i know what you mean. Splipknot is one of my favorite bands, it seems they were really influenced by pantera tho.

Its ok. Everyone has that type of music that makes you feel better, people just like different things. I dont like that kind of music, or Rap but theres really nothing I can do about that other than try to ignore it. If you like that kind of music just pick up some headphones, or maybe turn the volume down a bit to respect the other people in your household.

I would be concerned too if my kids (if i had kids) listened to a song called "As I lay dying". Whoever made that track needs to be shot, and then they will be dying to death.

Not being mean but, if you want to make a song about death, darkness, dying, and killing yourself you might just need to end your life instead of making money of your sucidial lyrics.

ummmm the bands name is as i lay dying but whatever.... with me when it comes to hard core metal and sh*t like that i really only pay attention to the music instead of the lyrics. only sometimes the lyrics. the only time i listen to the lyrics in my music is the punk. not the music in punk.
punk is shit*y music because it takes shit*y musicians to play it. it sucks but it sounds good to my ear. and all other people that like it.

Wow this forum never ceases to surprise me.... All of these young All American types with thier christian values and no sex before marrige and yada yada yada..... and not one mention of the crazy notion that this young man respects the wishes of the people who were good enough to bring him into this world. So let me give you my dumb old fart opinion.....
If you want to live under these people's roof (your parents) and eat thier food, wear thier clothes, take thier money, for everything from candy to toilet paper then you may, just for a fleeting second want to ask yourself "why does my father act this way" ??
Could it be that he loves his son. And that in a desperate attempt to protect his son from the dangers of this life, he gets frightened when he hears his son listening to music that CLEARLY glorifies and glamirises suicide. Is that so hard for you to grasp ? That your father may not understand that to you its just music, whereas to him it is a threat to someone he dearly loves and worries about ??
Instead of inteligently telling them to "f%#$ off" you could try something really whacky like having a sensible conversation with them about why this is music that you like and why they dont have to worry about you killing yourself from listening to it.
Believe it or not your parents are probably capable of holding an inteligent conversation, even in people as ancient as 30 years of age or older (yes there are people older than that) they still retain enough faculties to understand your point of view. Amazing but true.
This is not a thread about music. This is a thread about mutual respect and understanding.
Its about you understanding and respecting thier wishes, if you accept that they love you and are concerned for your welfare and if you wish to live in thier home. Its about them respecting your choices as a young man to listen to the music you enjoy and understanding that your mature and inteligent enough to listen to it without acting on the messages it presents.
If you reduce yourself to shouting obscenities at your parents it is not going to help your case to argue that you are indeed able to be trusted as an adult in making those sorts of decisions.
Just think about it, just put yourself in thier shoes for 5 seconds.

Meh, best thing to get someone to change views on music is subject them to an alternate beat. Don't be all WTF ur music is the suck. Just show them the music you appreciate and who knows they'll probably like it if not try try again.

Yeah, tell your parents to fuck off. That would be a good way to not have a place to sleep if you were my kid. So disrespectful, just let you know - your beliefs don't mean anything. No one cares. Your parents might care, but if you start throwing in the F word at them, I'd tell you to find someone else to take care of you. I'm sure people will be lined up around the block to feed and clothe you so you can shout fuck off at them... nice.
Definitaly dont tell them to fuck off they will most likely get extremely mad. I dont think they should tell you you cant listen to music but as i lay dieing really isnt a good example of a band to say that their not bad. I would sit them down and let them listen to some of your really really soft song by each band(good luck with the casualties) and explain to them that you have no intention of going around destroying things. If that doesnt work you could just tell them that its just a fad and your only into it to be cool(yeah i know its lame but at least you can listen to your music). Good luck!

Can you seriously look at yourself in the mirror and say that. Can you look yourself in the eye and say that is your genuinely honest opinion on what is the right thing to do ?
Its actually quite simple....
You either accept that when you live off someone you respect thier wishes. Or you gather up your testes and go look after yourself. Then you wont have to listen to anyone elses totally invalid opinion about what you can or cant do with your life.
Trying to have it both ways by living of someone and insulting them at the same time, is both weak and uninteligent. Resulting in you lying to both them and yourself.
If you think for a second that insulting people will get you further in life than empathising and communicating with them, your in for a tough life.
