I'm sure I'll forget a few games in here, but I'll try to list the most significant ones to me over the years. I liked alot of series, beyond single games, so I list those as well. And I'll start with one that I can't believe hasn't been mentioned yet...
1. Symphony of the Night: This game was incredible when it first came out. It's true that not all of its elements were completely new, but it put them all together in a magnificent way. The game is incredibly fun, which is most important. It is also just overflowing with style on top of great gameplay. It had scenes which pull some odd chords with me, especially the confessional or the succubus encounter. The game overflows with unique weapons, monsters, and all the references to obscure horror or mythology that you can think of. What praise of this game would be complete without mention of its music? I have the soundtrack and still listen to it. It is such an ecclectic mix of styles, from classical to rock to jazz. When it was released, it was the greatest video game score I had ever heard. It also envigorated the Castlevania series, and gave it a new standard and an actual storyline beyond 'hey Dracula's back, go whip him to death.' It's my favorite game, ever.
2. Dungeon Keeper Series: How invigorating is evil? Not only did these games have a great premise, but great execution. Gameplay is fun, style overwhelming, and gallows humor in full effect.
3. Alone in the Dark Series: Survival horror existed before even Resident Evil. I don't know if this game really started the genre, but it was certainly close enough. And it was scary. This series inspired a lot of what we grew to love in later series like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Oh, speaking of which...
4. Silent Hill Series: These games always stick out for me. While Resident Evil was certainly a good game, horror derived from unknowable cthonic sources is more frightening to me than scientifically created zombie-viruses. The second game did disturbing very well, and some of the images in that game still pop out in my mind. The first time I saw Pyramid Head, such a jarring...strange appearance. The ending was also great, and I still argue with my friends that there is something else to be seen when that tape goes blurry beyond the obvious. I won't go into specifics to avoid spoilers, but it's a really good game to debate plot points.
5. Dawn of War: Do you have any idea how good it feels to finally have a Warhammer game that not only does not suck, but is actually extremely good? This game does some great things for the genre, and has many innovative ideas.
6. Prince of Persia Series: Yeah..I'm talking about all of them. The old games were fun puzzle games and something pretty different for their time. The new games are just beautiful, and allowing you to play with that kind of agility and acrobatics is just ridiculously fun. I couldn't believe the kind of stuff I was doing when I played Sands of Time, and the time streaming effects were so well conceived. Imagine a platforming game with death-defying leaps and acrobatics...but if you miss one to your certain death you can just rewind time and do it again.
7. Legacy of Kain Series: The gameplay and graphics are not always spectacular, and the series is not without its flaws. However, the story has always drawn me in. Beyond that, the malevolance of Kain and the darkness of his existence make a compelling story. And Kain has the greatest quotes and voice actor in any videogame ever. All hail Simon Templeman!
8. Fallout Series: ...maybe not Fallout: Tactics so much, though it does have its charms. A friend bought Baldur's Gate, and included was a free copy of Fallout. I tried getting into Baldur's Gate, but D&D just isn't my thing, so I tried this game that came with it. As a fan of the post-apocalyptic genre it appealed, but the game is so well designed, so...I don't know, the absurd details, pop-culture references, storyline, morally ambiguous play, all make for one of my favorite games. And Macguyver does a voice in the first one, and that's just cool.
9. The Elder Scrolls Series: They pushed back Oblivion!!! Anyway, the first game in the series I actually played was Dagerfall. I couldn't believe the game was so huge, and offered both an epic main quest and completely open-ended gameplay. It had flaws, alot of that vastness was shallow, but it was another step on the ladder. The ladder leading to Morrowind! A huge, open ended game, an epic main quest, and alot of details fleshed out to make things feel much more real than its predecessors. There are still things in that game that I've never seen. And Ordinators are cool. "We're watching you...scum!"
10. Amercan McGee's Alice: The game is just twisted. I really do feel like I'm traveling in a little girl's messed up insane world when I play this. Sure it's a platform action game, but the environments are so original and well thought out. Barring the things trying to kill me, I wouldn't mind living in such a world.
(might change in time with memory change and so on)
1- The Dark Queen of Krynn + the trilogy & variation like Pool of Darkness (SSI).
2- Baldur's GateII: Throne of Bhaal + serie & variations like Torment, Icewind Dale and so on (Black Isle).
3- Civilisation IV + serie & variation like GalCiv (might change back to the III in time, but so far I enjoy the 4th a LOT) (Sid Meeir).
4- Heroes of Might and Magic III + variations & other versions (excluding the 4th who is lame). (3DO) Would also consider Celtic Legends, Domination and other such titles here. The Sword of Aragon is definitely here as well...and Warlord. Well, maybe some would fall under Civ4 category...dunno...the limit is...wild.
5- CoH/CoV prior the nerfs and while ignore their lame CS. (Cryptic) Strangely I want to play CoV now, but I know it would not outmatch Civ4 appeal in the long run. Civ4 may be less intense, but once you start, it is just 1 more turn...and it will last me a long long time. The free month must also affect this desire. I am logical, like every Civ4 player should be, and Civ4 have no monthly fee. It is like a very good friend smiling and accepting that you want to be with a wrong gal tonight, eh, he is a friend, he don't care, he tell you this gal is...well, no, he don't say anything, he let you understand he don't approve, but no more...
6- The Bard's Tale legacy...hard to put the more recent with very nice story and music and a short 20 hours of gameplay or the first...the whole legacy.
7- Champions of Norrath + RTA & other SoE products like Everquest. (SoE) I spend more time in EQ, but despite all the good memories of EQ and the reason EQ make me enjoy those titles, I enjoy more the CoN than EQ...for the small time it last me.
8- Morrowind and other RPGs like the FF X...bah, no FF is not good enough for me...well maybe...Xenosaga was...anyway.
9- Tower of Doom, Double Axe and many others...
10- Kuei older products, like Bandit King of Ancient China and Romance of the 3 Kingdoms 2 (was better than the first), but the most recents products...well, they are not bad...but...they kinda lack, I would expect something else than what they release.
I could put many others titles, like Pac Man, Joust, Gorf, Steel Empire, KotOR or many others, but they just dont feel like they belong in that list. I know I put KotOR in the past, but a fresh experience can hype up a product. Althought dislodging Civ4, Baldur's Gate or The SSI products is a feat of incomensurable measure, bypassing others titles ranging from 4 to 10 is not impossible with a good release...of course Heroes is quite hard to beat, but not impossible, especially that I hate the 4th and the advertising they do about real time in the 5th is freaky. Anyway, enough rambling for me.
EDIT: Medieval Total War would fall in the Civ4 or Heroes serie since the way I play it...feel bad for forgetting it, but was not a first pick or a leader of a serie anyway. Nobody else is a fan of SSI? You of little faith! To Dekron: I am sorry, but I have no idea what those games you name are, I assume they are from a genre I don't enjoy much, like the ancestor of Doom or something.
- "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren
Jet Force Gemini! Wasn't that one of Rare's games? I never beat the thing, actually...I'm going to have to dig up the N64 and do that. I could play Banjo Kazooie again, too.
MY GOD... people, dont disagree with his list for god sakes. make your own, that the idea of the post.
This isnt a "these are the top 10 games" this is the "list your top 10 games"
so stop telling eachother their opinoins are wrong.
and for me 1)Warcraft 2 2)Diable 2 3)Chrono Trigger 4)Worms (any of them) 5)World of Warcrat 6)Ultima Online 7)Populous 2 8)Themepark 9)Powermonger 10)Sim city
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
Originally posted by nubbins you made a greatest video game list of all time and failed to list Chrono Trigger ? i just like to point out how f*cked up your list is when you dont have CT on it but you have WoW i mean really WoW , what are u another mindless b.net kiddie who lost their way to the WoW general forums ? im surprised you didnt include GW , CS or another piece of nub garbage
Ok seriously, the post wasnt about WOW and I didnt gloat WOW throughout the whole post. It was #3 on my personal list. And what makes Chrono Trigger so good? I thought it was decent but I mean I'm not into RPGs where you dont even get to move in combat. And it's these same people who think WOW is simple, hell, at least in World of Warcraft my character can RUN and JUMP, I can actually sneak up on my enemies. What makes a game where you stand still and click "attack" so much more complicated? Its not, games like that are simpler than WOW and therefore people who play them are close-minded and angry at WOW for other reasons (probably it's popularity).
i play on australian servers because racism is acceptable there

You don't click attack on chronotrigger. Furthermore, you don't stand still, either. It was a revolutionary RPG. One of the early RPGs that wasn't turn-based. From your list it looks like you've been playing games for 5 years or less. Thats cool, but don't start saying how innovative these games you picked are.

Ah yes.... Lucas Adventure games.... Now there was a period of gaming goodness! "Sam and Max", "Monkey Island" and who could forget the brilliant and totally amusing "Full Throttle."
One other noteable exception to my list caused by my drug fried brain not retaining the information properly was the Close Combat series. Truly excellent gameplay and very addictive. Id really like to see more games like CC....
Ah the simple joys of trying to command troops that actually get scared. Having to watch your men lie face down whimpering as the Nazis advance with you bashing the keyboard and yelling "FIRE YOU F$#$%NG IDIOTS FIRE!!"

1) Ogre Battle 64 - Really, the story was better than any FF game. The combat was incredibly deep as well.
2) The Half Life Series - Blue Shift was a bit of a drag, but the whole series is just epic.
3) Civilization 3 - I played this for HOURS.
4) Space Station Silicon Valley - One of the biggest sleeper hits in history. A mixture of action, puzzles, and sports.
5: Jet Force Gemini - A great 3rd person action game on the N64. A total sleeper that deserves a sequel.
6) Mario Party 1 - The original party game.
7) Goldeneye 64 - Incredible AI for the time. Multiplayer that is still fun today.
