I played alot of warcraft 2. I bought starcraft but didn't play it much. I read that starcraft 2 was not an improvement over the original (game mechanics same?) , just updated graphics. . Basically I decided I already had the original game and didn't have much desire to even look back at the original game. So wasn't much point in buying SC2 or any of the other expansions. Advertising doesn't change that....

Starcraft 2 is not the same as Starcraft 1. The game plays very differently but I don't know. If you didn't like starcraft 1, I am not sure if you will like Starcraft 2. SC2 is very micro and macro intensive RTS just like its predecessor. If that's not your thing, you will not like SC2's multiplayer. The Warcraft RTS series are very micro intensive but their macro can be considered laughable by Starcraft standards.

Even if you don't like SC2 macro/micro multiplayer the campaign is a blast and with SC2 on sale for the next day or two for $20 you should really give it a go. Dont listen to all the nah-sayers about it being 1/3 of a game it's a ~25 missions Terran focused campaign with all the Blizzard spit and polish you'd come to expect, there is also a small selection of Protoss missions. You need to make permanent tech choices and mission decisions through out which is different from SC1, expect 25-30 hours of gameplay.
Yeah the animations are little jarring, you'd think they'd have the original assets so they can create new animations?.... in truth the HD tag a little far-fetched, a "now in widescreen" tag would be more fitting.
Seems blizzard are pushing SC2 on this site, likey due to the WoW players. I'll be getting SC2:HotS as I like SC games but wondering if anyone not yet into SC2 has had their interest piqued due to adveristing on here.
BTW SC2 is on sale at the moment 50% off on the b.net store so get it now while it's cheap, you do need original SC2 to play HoTs.
Let me also take the opportunity to clear up some SC2 related misconceptions;
You dont need to be online to play campaign
Original SC2 (WoL) is a ~30 mission terrain focused campaign with Hot's (~25 missions) focusing on Zerg and LotV focusing on Protoss.
All races are playable in Multiplayer
There is no subscription (yes some thing there is)
This sounds more like an advertisement than something to really discuss.

Not a cold chance in hell. Maybe, MAYBE, after they have brought all the disparate parts of StarCraft II together into the one game that it shoulda been sure. But to cut the game into thirds and then pawn it off on people? No thank you. This and Diablo III are what finally made me cancel my wow subscriptions and kill all my toons so that I would never again be tempted to give these sorry excuses for humanity another penny.

Yeah it's just in widescreen and some new textures, too bad the animations are at least as important imo. Would have been a nice nostalgia trip otherwise, and a good game too.

I wondered when someone might show up spewing nonsense about getting 1/3 of a game.. blah blah, well if you consider a ~25 missions campaign 1/3 then have you ever been happy with the content in any game? (you dont need to answer)
The best reason to buy Starcraft 2 is the same as the reason to buy Warcraft 3: the custom maps. There are an incredible variety of custom maps, with so many different styles of play among them that even if you don't like the core game, you are virtually guaranteed to like one of the custom maps.
Also, I really need to give Blizzard credit on doing Starcraft 2 right. They did virtually everything in their power to please the fan base and silence the complainers. They included a lengthy single-player campaign so that people who hate multiplayer couldn't complain. They included a tight and strategically deep multiplayer so that the people who hate single player couldn't complain. They packaged it as a box with one price on it so the people who hate subscription fees couldn't complain. They did not include a microtransaction store (yet!) so those who hate microtransactions couldn't complain. They left the core gameplay of Starcraft effectively the same while expanding strategic options, so the "original game was fine" crowd couldn't complain. And most important, they packaged it with literally the deepest mod editor ever to ship with a commercial game, so that even if players hated everything else, they could redesign the game the way they liked, so they couldn't complain.
. . . And yet, some people still complain. "The campaign got split into three parts" (despite, you know, each of those three parts being as long as what was included in previous games) and "it's Blizzard" are, apparently, enough to complain about a game and not buy it.

My brother said "as a late birthday present imma buy you starcraft 2 when it comes out!"... next day Blizzard announces the game will be split in 3... I looked at my brother and he muttered under his breath "fuck..." ). But yeah the game's worth it to me for the custom maps and the nostalgia it summons up in my mind as it is the last of my childhood games not to be destroyed (Warcraft 2, Starcraft 1 and Red Alert 1 and 2 being the RTSes I played most during my formative years as a gamer).
For me this is first Blizzard game i will not be getting as soon as possible, maybe at all.
I dislike a lot of B. decisions like:
1, Intentionally postponing basic functionality promised for original game for paid datadisc (clan support, name changes, recconnect)
These things are available to everyone I think.
2, Removing all interesting concepts from datadisc like burrow-move-banelings, ultralisk charge or new nudys worms
Not sure what you mean by "datadisc">?
3, 2 years to introduce boring units like swarmhost or hellbat
I kinda agree.
4, They forced deletion of HOTS custom maps from original game, they had same functionality as datadisc ( - graphics and physics ofc)
5, Custom games filter is still broken and not working
Custom games filter is working much much better now.
6, Not introducing any new interesting mechanics only several BW rewamps like Viper's cloud or Mine (Vulture)
I kinda agree.
7, Merging multiple purchased copies of game into one for players who used to play on multiple servers
Wait what?
8, Still refusing to add LAN and their overall greed (compare 40 euro for data to free Dota 2 or LOL)
I don't see the point of LAN. Also the game is superoverpriced for euro countries. Otherwise it's fine in the UK and the US. I paid 24.80 pounds for HOTS. I think that's fair. DOTA and LOL are free games but that doesnt mean that all games should be free lol.
+ Taking fees from tournaments instead of sponsoring them (copare this to Valve or Riot's mentality)
... for these reason they lost me as customer

Best game ever... Campaign is so sick even tho zerg is the race I least enjoy playing in multiplayer campaign is so much better than wol and wol campaign was good. Will continue to be my main game without a doubt as i am competetive dude who values skill in gaming and as side games I'll take arcade games in sc2 . Btw new b.net in hots makes you want to sit in menus finally.
Originally posted by Kuinn Sooooo, how much is there RPG elements in the zerg campaign? Will I possibly find it fun even if I dont like playing as zerg at all in multiplayer?
The RPG elements are a bit light in the campaign, certainly less than compared to Wings of Liberty. Just not a whole lot of roleplaying you can squeeze out of squishy near-mindless things that do everything Kerrigan tells them to.
Still, it's entirely possible you will enjoy the campaign regardless. The mission design has a lot of interesting and downright fun ideas incorporated. It's a reasonably good introduction to Zerg, and to me at least it felt like they were trying to make Zerg as approachable as possible for new players who find the style to be strange and the units off-putting. The style is still strange and the units off-putting, but you'll get the hang of the race and start enjoying it before too long.

I am only halfway through (I think), playing on Hard so I have died a bunch but clocked around 12 hours thus far. I love the boss fights - I can see them being rather easy on normal difficulty so I would recommend anyone to play HotS on Hard, the little set peices are rather nice to.
Theres more WC3 style in HotS in that you level up a unit (Kerigan) and choose abilities from a tree and so on. You also need to mkae binary choices on what mutations your zerg units take (you cannot change these later), further more you have to choose 1 of 3 unit skill mutations for most units (these can be changed later). And just as with WoL there are a tonne more units in the single player.
Story aint half bad either but that twist right at the start yeah I knew where that was going.
Personally, I'm a lot more concerned about How I have to buy HotS the expansion now instead of the solo release, and how the expanded units are not available for WoL buyers. I'm pretty sure when I bought the game that they said that since they were breaking the story down into 3 parts that the expanded online gameplay would be accessible thru any version and be playable solo... but... I see Blizzard still thinks they should gouge players... and while I would have bought it just to play it, between this and their behavior with D3... I think I'd rather uninstall it and ban all Blizzard products from my patronage.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, if they get angry, they'll be a mile away... and barefoot.

I do recall talk around the time it was announced SC2 would be a trilogy that each would be stand alone but I dont think any one from blizzard ever confirmed or promised this. Either way it's an expansion and behaves as such in the same way WC3 and SC1 expansions did. You can still play multiplayer without HotS but you can only play against people who also don't have HotS but if you're serious about multiplayer you'll pony up the $40 for HotS. Support the game.
