So anyone else hope for naval combat?

RaagnarzRaagnarz Member RarePosts: 647

I know its probably too much to ask for or being too hopeful, but the thought of pirates and naval combat always gets me excited. We have no idea what the size of the game world will be but I hope there are large expanses of water and island clusters. I also hope that Ship combat is present. That would add a whole other facet to crafters. Imagine crafters being shipbuilders as well.

Again I'm probably hoping against hope but since I want to be a Viking I need my longboat and my pirate life lol.

Not really. First give me great land combat before messing with more gimmicky items...

I can see that in an eventual expansion.

Here's what i thought about yesterday after PRX_Klurp's post regrding an interview (sorry if got the name wrong).

(ok i admit, i'm way ahead but hey, i got vision !)

an eventual CU expansion could be something related to naval battles...at one point our crafters getting so good they start building ships, and we discover islands around the continent for new types of ressources etc.

I thought of a lousy name for it for now :P

    - Conquer the ocean : after many dragons attacks coming from somewhere away from the mainland, people starts wondering where they could be coming from, what treasures could be found...The "Kings" of the three realms order their crafters to start designing plans to make bigger ships that could travel out on the high seas and explore beyond the land they know.

(Of course we already know how to make smaller ships, that can carry less people and survive small waves, but they havent so far felt the need to travel beyond, that would allow small boats to be crafted at release if it is required to have small boats at release)

    - That could also have a "secondary effect" as to where new classes are required, so training new skills to the inhabitants of the mainland to develop would become a necessity, thus creating new classes

    - it would also make new other things for the crafters to do. besides the obvious new bigger boats, those ships would also be used to attack from the sea, would force the crafters to build new bigger stronger walls, bigger docks etc.

    - would also be an excellent way to bring new ressources in game (found on islands around the main continent)

    - could create an opportunity (if needs be) to bring new big monsters in game besides dragons (i.e. big hydras etc)

    Being careful with expansions :

    - No teleports to be added

    - Nothing remotely close to ToA of course, as people would go "that's bull, another expanion involving boats and water, it ll be like ToA its gonna suck ! Didnt MJ learn anything form DAoC ?"

    - Every ideas brought to the expansion would have to be thought more as another way to deepen what is already in place, and not to add totally new stuff that would divide the players either it'd be in different loading zones, or as to what players prefer to do now (now meaning "now that there is an expansion, what can we do instead of RvR ?" The answer would have to be "NOTHING ! ", except housing and crafting of course.

Thats it for now ! i hope it was clear enough and that you enjoyed it.

But i agree with the second poster, concentrate on inland stuff first.

Placing some keeps/towers near water (within range of ship weaponry) would be good for future expansions if naval combat was ever adding in.  To save them from having to adjust maps later.

The major problem you run into with naval combat is that it takes away the ability to utilize your char's normal skills (for the most part) that you've spent so much time developing. I would rather them spend time "adding" to those skilsets instead of building another seperate stand alone feature to the game. Yes, even years after the game is live... I would prefer they continue adding to each class and the land game in general.

I do see your point though, this is just my personal preference.

Are we talking about belly buttons or ships?

    This whole thread is confusing.

Naval combat would be pretty good to have eventually. Lets just do one thing at a time though because we don't want an unpolished game.

Hey if it's a RVR only game, with crafting/housing/trading... they should have time to work on stuff like this...

If they want to be another mediocre MMO by biting off more than they can chew... then sure.

But they want to be great and polished in the key areas(FP) of the RvR, crafting, housing, stat site, community(requires time by the devs to help keep them connected to their player base).  So like mention back back back burner.

Unless you are being sarcastic.  If so it is a very cryptic sarcasm.

The game mechanics for a land based game will not be balanced / built for water combat, though i'm not sure what you're talking about boats fighting boats? or just fighting in water?

Either way i disagree with both.

if you want boats fighting boats go play another game to get that gimick.

if you want just fighting in water, I urge you to see travel back in time and play daoc, water combat was a terrible addition to the game, brough rise to speed in water which ruined other parts of the game ( imo ) etc.

I would like CU to stay away from this, focus more on keeps etc. REMEMBER they won't have 100million budget :p people getting crazy with their ideas

In fact what i suggestd in my post isnt naval combat per say, but mostly having access to many islands around the main land, to eventually find new ressources (when game requires that we need new ones) etc.

as per naval combat per say, i dont think it should be in.

Naw I'm serious. MJ has posted a bunch about what NOT having PVE opens them up to. After release, they will have time to work on interesting things like the above, and other ideas... instead of wasting time on PVE content that people chew through faster than devs can create it. When you don't have to please both the PVE and PVP crowd, I think we'll see some really interesting things they work on over the years after this comes out.

Obviously they get the core game working before stuff like this, that's a given. I'm just saying down the road they'll be able to add cool stuff like this, and other ideas.

But it also sounds like CSE is going to have a smaller crew than most other MMO's.  So that smaller crew should still be pretty busy with tweaking and refining the core gameplay for awhile after release.

As much as I think it would be really cool and add depth to RvR, my vote is to wait until the core mechanics are polished.

Its great to see that so far everyone agrees on that. We want less with more depth to it, rather than tons of artificial contents that really doesnt add anything.

Never liked the crafted boat thingys in DaoC. Only used the boats to travel to my next unsuspecting victim in foreign lands. Doubt naval combat will work in a game like this.

And I ofcourse agree with what's being said about the focus on the core basics of the game.

The only use boats served in DAoC was /kicking off poor souls in the middle of the ocean...

I never did it, but I ran with some elitist/asshat melees. lol

I remember when boats were first put into the game and you could drive them up onto the shore and bug them out where they would just stay there.

So bored one day we drove up tons of boats up ontu the island around the first keep in alb or hib... wish i still had those SS's :(

The thing that people need to remember is that this is NOT DAOC nor will it be. Yes the swimming in DAOC sucked. Yeah boats weren't implemented well. That doesn't mean swimming, underwater fighting, boats, or naval combat can't be well implemented. I would definitely understand if it got added as a stretch goal or expansion. That being said I would love to see it at launch so I can sail to a remote island to set up a keep and plunder away baby!

I have no plans to implement naval combat in CU, not even for a stretch goal, I've got better ideas in mind for them. :)
