Worth Coming Back???

Hello all.

I quit DAoC about two years ago, after the release of ToA.  Since then I have played WoW, CoH, and CoV.  I was recently checking out some of the new info on DAoC (the Heretic class looks nice) and I am interested in coming back but I would first like to hear from those still playing to see if it is worth it.

Just FYI, I was one of the many that left after the ToA expansion.

Thanks in advance.

personally, a game with such a low population isn't worth coming back to. trying to get anywhere int he game would be tough.

if you didnt like the toa expansion try one of the classic servers.  they both have good pops and alot of good people on them.

If the reason you left was because of ToA then you have a few options. Many things about ToA have changed and I think more are comming soon.

If you want to avoid it entirely there are 3 servers now without ToA. 2 of the 3 have the highest populations on the game and average around 2500 or so during US prime-time hours.

Leveling is much quicker. Some people can do it in 1/10th of the the time it did from when the game first came out, but average is about 1/5 of the time. So even if you play less than 20 hours a week you should have a level 50 in 1-2 months.

Catacombs was a great expansion for classes, zones, and items.

DR adds some nice storyline quests, although it is rather short.

RvR has changed a lot. A new frontier is out there. You can conquer towers down or level them to the ground. You can knock holes in the walls of keeps now.

So you will have plenty of people to group with and kill on the Classic Servers. Also there is no free /level 20 on the classic servers.

If you liked DAOC prior to ToA you will most likely like the Classic Servers.

Thanks for the info.  I remember hearing about the release of classic servers but there are a few questions I have about them.  Being that they are classic, do they offer any of the features/upgrades available through any of the expansions?  For example, could someone play a Reaver or Vampiir on a classic server?  Can someone access the zones available from any expansion released after ToA?

I hope these questions don't sound stupid, I just want to get an idea of what these servers entail.  I tried looking them up online, but couldn't find the answers to these questions.

Races/Classes: Yes :) I've killed bunches of Vampir's and have seen Savages and the other races/classes as well. :)
The rest I'm not sure on though I do see quest givers for catecombs and such so I am thinking that yes all the expansions *except* TOA are available on the classic servers.... but am not sure. I only just came back so I haven't experimented much yet.

As to whether it's worth coming back?

    I did :)

You get all of the races/classes/graphics upgrades that all of the other servers do.  You cannot access ToA areas.

Basically it is DAOC with everything all of the others servers have minus ToA land/ML/Artifacts.

Also it has a buff range restriction to help cut down on buffbots. On the ARS ("classic" :P) servers you have to be grouped with the buffer and within a certain range. This helps prevent people running a second account, buffing up their character and leaving the buffer sitting safely at the entrance to the zone.

Well, there is still the problem of people auto-sticking their own personal bot on a 2nd account to their main and leveling both at the same time. People are going to greater lengths to use a buff bot on the classic servers, I think it's that 2nd account they all bought for their buff bots on other servers, don't want it to go to waste I guess.image

But fear not, and time I group with some one and they want their buff bot grouped I tell them it ain't happening. If you want to play a druid/healer/cleric, then play one and log off our other toon! I'm not gonna help you level 2 characters while you can only play one most of the time.

Yup, I've found that most groups will punt anyone who's a "bot" from the group on the Classic servers. I know I will punt a 'bot' and let a player in in a heartbeat if I'm a group leader.

Personally I don't mind bots in a group since they're sometimes fairly helpful, as long as they're not keeping a PLAYER from being in the group :)

ToA = trials of Atlantis. It is an expansion pack. Too long to get into why "everyone" hates it. Lets just say that it benefited 'powergamers' because they could play 10 hours a day and hurt those that did not have the time. Or that is the impression at least.

Instead of buying all of the xpacks it would be cheaper to buy the new Epic edition. I think you can download the two expansions you are missing for $30 from DAOC. But it is the same cost for the epic edition at the store. So that is what I think is the best option.

This game is crazy, I would say YES YES YES to coming back!

Guild Wars - Rorick Aurlith E/Mo pumped up with the best armor and weapon, has all his skills, and runes. PvP King!

Dark Age of Camelot - Leaton 50 Vampiir - Lamorak - Guild: Magic and Mayhem!

As stated, ToA basically took casual gamers out of the mix for Realm vs. Realm combat because we (yes, I'm a causual player) just didn't have the time to camp artifacts or do Master Level raids for 8-16 hours a day. However, those of us who stuck around are hopeful that a lot of people will come back once the next patch goes live, much of the time sink that is ToA is going to become much easier and much more doable for those of us with limited time to play.

Also, they're going to remove one of the biggest obstacles to the casual player regarding obtaining artifacts. Artifacts are currently obtained by completing an encounter with the creature who has the artifact. At the successful completion of the encounter, you get the unactivated (i.e., un-equippable) artifact. You then must farm mobs for the set of three scrolls to combine into a book , which you then hand in to a designated NPC along with the artifact itself and the NPC in return gives you the "activated" (equippable) artifact at level 0. You then must level up the artifact in the specific game area where that artifact gains experience (10 levels) to unlock all its powers (stat/skill adds and timered magical abilites). Some artifacts currently level quite slowly...I have one particular artifact on my warden that levels so slowly and in such a particular area that although I've had it almost two years, it's still only level 2.

As you might imagine, this process can take a ridiculous amount of time. Also, as only one artifact is dropped when the encounter is successfully completed and some encounters may require up to 20-25 people to complete, and considering the spawn time for some encounters can currently be longer than 24 hours, this very much favors people who can be in the game all day long and camp the encounter, get the artifact when it drops, and then sell it for insane amounts of in-game cash due to its rarity.

The good part about the next patch is that all of these things will be changed. The unactivated artifacts will no longer be dropped during the encounter. You will only need to complete the encounter and have the necessary scrolls to give to the NPC who then gives you the activated artifact. The scrolls will drop far more frequently and currently rare scrolls will have their drop rates changed to become normal drops. Artifacts will no longer level only in specific areas but will level everywhere, and the amount of experience needed to level them will be reduced.

So, as you can see, we casual players will once again be able to compete without being at such a huge disadvantage, especially in RvR, where we'll be able to have comparable gear and it won't so much be a contest of "my uber gear vs. your margainally adequate gear" as a contest of who makes better use of the tools their character has. We're hopeful this patch brings the game back to closer to its former number of players...and if you left because of ToA, come back and try it again after the next patch image.

Just buy the new Epic box that's out. It has ALL the expansions (including TOA) for only $39.00 US.

    Well worth it, imo.

Having TOA installed won't matter if you play on a classic server. But it will give you the option of playing with TOA on a normal server with another toon if the urge strikes you.

Other reason why people hate TOA cause of ML mainly i think... it changed PvP completely... was never the same after that.  Well I left cause of Frontier ... and ML cause it made pvp changed.
