If you really like a game you give it a good rating. And ratings like these are relative of course, one rates a game against all the other games of that genere one has tried. Yes, EVE is a space game thingy and not everyone necessarily like that setting, but it is a very good game and considering all the games out there, it would be strange if dedicated MMO players would not keep EVE in the top spot, whatever game they happen to be playing at the time.
Eve is a great game if you have the PATIENCE to dig deep, once your involved with the universe around you, i think thats when the fun really begins. But if your like me and only did stuff along(mining and missions) ur missing out alot of the game. i will go back to try it once ive finished testing SWG 1.5 :-P
I am acually downloading a 14-day trail of EVE at this very moment. Never tried it before, but from what I've heard it's a really good game. High expectations!

Expect to be bored. That way if you like it you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Something I learned a long time ago: Never go into a game with high expectations. They ALWAYS fail to live up to them.

i'd say it has much more depth, much more freedom, and much more player choice than pretty much any other MMO on the market there is even the freedom to scam other players as long as it is within game dynamics.
sure, there are problems (lag ) but i wouldn't rather have any other MMO out there.
and everyone always comes back. i've seen people leave for WoW and come back. i've seen people leave to Mx0 and come back. i've seen people leave for SWG and come back.

Sorry Cerrian I have to disagree with you there. It is a purely POPULARITY based rating, not quality! This site just has an innordinate number of EVE fans as opposed to nearly every other site around (which generally all have WoW coming in number 1) It's obvious that it's only a popularity rating because of the "lag" average vote alone! It's ranked SECOND out of the 8 categories and yet there is a CONTINOUS uproar on the EVE forums themselves on how bad the lag is (and has been since mid 2004). If it were a TRUE indication of "game quality" lag would be rated lower even by EVE fans...HELL community is ranked lower and all the EVE-lovers CONSTANTLY rave about how good the EVE community is...pish...true ratings my eye. I've said this in 3 other posts now...and EVERY time I've been met with deathly silence from the EVE-side.
Your rants about lag tired me from page 3.....
Did it ever occur to you that it's always the same people complaining, and always just a few dozen? Out of what, 80,000 accounts? Those people think that EVE should have pings of less than 10 ms, or from people who go into heavily populated systems and expect the same thing (in fact, some of those complaining are actually contributing to the lag by staying in said systems, causing system lag through lvl 4 agent whoring).
I've never had any lag, except in some of the heavily populated systems, which is no more than logical. You can't expect to have 300 people in 1 place and have pings of less than 100 ms. You can try that in each and every other game out there, it won't work! WoW even starts to lag when there are 50 or so people in the same place..... That can't be said of EVE.
TBH, i think this site is actually the most honest - if thousands of other sites have wow ranked #1, don't THEY have the most fanboi's? Why are there more eve fanboi's on this site than on others? Or is it just because objectively speaking, eve *might* actually be a better game than wow?
I've played both since release, and i can say without a doubt that EVE is the better game, by far. And i'm not being a fanboi about this.... The reasons why EVE is and should be the #1 mmo out there have been stated time and time again. If you just keep ignoring reviews from epopel who have actually played the game, and only look to the random lag posts on the eve forums (and trust me, they're not as common as you think.... I frequent those forums a LOT mroe than you do.), well, that doesn't exactly make you the most objectively slated person around, no?
If people took the time to actually PLAY eve, and not just complain and bitch about long travel times after 1 hour of figuring out how to press the 'undock' button, they'd be able to judge it appropriately. Too many bad reviews simply come from people without patience.
EVE is a game of patience, not instant rewards. EVERY SINGLE THING you accomplish is your own accomplishment, not some quest reward you had a lvl 60 run you through. Actions you do actually affect the game universe, as opposed to EVERY SINGLE OTHER mmo out there. The market can be made and it can be broken, and most interaction and incentive for pvp actually comes from the players themselves, not just some half-assed fortress or battleground feature.
The fact that you can actually be a bad guy in EVE should also convince some people - pk'ing in other games simply serves no purpose other than annoying the ones you kill, and in msot games, it's simply impossible to actually target another player, let alone hit him or kill him.
EVE goes deeper than the content provided by devs who never show themselves. For that matter, the EVE devs actually post on the forums - while scarce and sporadically, it's a good sign. I don't see the blizzard devs trading in a day of driving in their ferrari's for 'communicating' with the players of their own game. IIRC they weren't even that present on the blizzcon - just some representatives. That goes for most other games too.
Name one other game where you don't have to fight and kill to advance. I think EVE is the only one who even offers that basic expansion of gameplay in mmo's - the others require you to kill contantly, even to learn a skill for *reading*.....
If you can't be arsed to spend more than 5 minutes checking a game out, please don't bother judging it.

:chuckles:
Ok then explain why people like myself (who are in the majority by the way) who tried the game through multiple free trials and even played for over a month of release, and in my case I played it all the way through Beta, and still don't like it? I find it *boring*
It's a great game if it's free (thus why I do free trials of it from time to time) but it's not worth spending $14.95 a month on (for me.)
The bottom line is *MOST* players, both intelligent and not, find EVE to be very *BORING*. Yes it has fun aspects but for the most part the game is very repetitive and boring. Many people don't like the time gated skill system (raises hand) either because we enjoy a more reward oriented skill system where you gain skill from using the skills rather than just turning on a clock and waiting. Sure it prevents people from 'botting' to get a skill faster but I never really cared about macro'ers who did it to get the skill... In UO people would get all bent about it but it never phased me. I just felt sorry for those folks who did it because they were missing so much fun in the game.
Also the insane times it takes to do some things (gathering cargo after a big fight!!!) annoy many people. The 'money grind' annoys people. The open PVP system turns others off. Most people want some form of PVP in games, this is true, but the majority of people who want PVP don't necessarily want to be forced to PVP. That also drives people away from the game. Look at any poll regarding PVP and most will say they prefer the OPTION to PVP rather than enforced PVP. EVE is semi-forced PVP in that to get the really good missions and the really good resources etc you HAVE to risk PVP. IE: The true "cool stuff" is out there in 0.0 where you risk getting your rear handed to you every minute.
Personally I *like* t hat aspect but many do not.
So EVE, while a FANTASTIC game and VERY well done is to many people just "not what they're looking for".
I have *never* seen someone say EVE is a "bad" game. I *have* seen peopls say they find it boring or it's just not their thing or whatever.
That above statement is also, as we have repeatedly said, why EVE's ranking is so high. It may not be the "best" MMORPG but it is the "least disliked" MMORPG. Most don't "dislike" EVE, they just don't "like" EVE so they don't rate it as negatively as they do a game that they detest.
While EVE isn't my game and I would never consider paying a monthly fee to play it (unless it were much lower - 9.95 *maybe*) I have rated it fairly high because I can see it's quality. The only 'bad' rankings I gave it were fun (5) and value (5) the others were fairly high because it's a quality game but for me it wasn't 'fun' and for me it doesn't offer a good 'value' because it's just not worth paying for to me.
THAT is why EVE doesn't have a lower rating.
And, No offense EVE fans... get OVER yourselves already. You aren't any more intelligent than any other MMORPG player. You just have more patience and EVE happens to be your game of choice. Trust me when I say this: The MMORPG you play is NOT an indicator of your intelligence. Puh-lease.

i thought we were trying to get away from the the whole game a is better than game b thing? thats pure opinion. objectively means it is based on fact. There is no 1 fact that makes EVE better than another game and vice versa. Subjectively is based on what you think. so you really should have said "Subjectively speaking (or In my opinion), EVE is the better game".
to you, EVE might be better than WoW, because it offers stuff you like. To someone else, WoW might be better to that person than EVE because it offers something he likes. And to another person, DAOC is the better game because it caters to her likes/needs in a game.
i'm really getting tired of hearing all this crap about eve and the other games. when someone asks about a game, don't say it sucks, don't say its the best.
just state the facts about the games. you can give a review of a game without resorting to insults, lies and generalizations.
The truth of the matter is, all mmorpgs are all behind the times in what they should be doing, therefore they all suck. Cmon all the technology out there, all the new hardware, and all they can do is feed us second rate rehash games. Anyone that thinks theres a great new ingenuitive game out there, smoke another one.
Theyre all pretty much crap and theyre only there to make sure you pay em cash.
None of the games on that list deserve more than a 6.
Now start gettin yer panties in a bunch fanbois, someone had to say it.

Huh? I believe I said I play both. Enjoy both, too, for different reasons.
Anyhow... I think most people are confusing this:
"Intelligent people are more drawn to EVE. So, better community."
with this, which is what I and others are trying to say:
"When confronted with the depth and complexity of the game, only the more mature, patient, motivated, and intelligent players normally remain. This results in a community with a higher amount of all those attributes than any other MMO."
And guys... nobody is saying that if you play WoW you are stupid and a kiddie. That would be like saying all Marines are stupid brainwashed Jarheads. Some of the Marines I know are more intelligent than most people I've met... but there's no disputing why that generalization exists.

Ummm
if eve is soooo good
y dont millions of ppl play it then
huh?
pwnt soooo h4rd
Because it's not simple enough for people to understand within the first 5 minutes of playing. The tutorial alone takes an hour or more.
Even though millions of ppl eat at McDonalds every day doesn't meen its the best food since boiled potatoes.

I'd finish off with a quote from PC Gamer UK: "In which other game is valentine operative a viable profession?"
i thought we were trying to get away from the the whole game a is better than game b thing? thats pure opinion. objectively means it is based on fact.
Just a little question, if I play Eve Online AND World of Warcraft, am I a "bnet kiddie" or a "intelligent gamer"?
lol!
OH NOES!! your head will explode! or someone's will...
its funny that you're the 1st person to say that they actually play both at the same time.
this is gonna be like that unstoppable force and unmovable object theory.
OMG guys you are unbelievable. One thing is for sure. This thread is much more boring than EVE!!!!
lol!

Playing Navy Field (www.navyfield.com) and waiting for Vanguard.
All Marines ARE stupid brainwashed Jarheads!

sorry, i must have missed that post or something.
Mostly Eve being ranked #1 just serves as a good example of how the site's ranking system is flawed.
If you take a look at Eve's current ratings you'll see:
The huge flaw here is that the supposed "Top Rated Game" has a lousy Fun factor.
If a game is no fun, then every other feature it may have is complete garbage, because simply put, they don't matter.
As a counter-example, some of its competitors would include:
Why do I give a rat's behind about a game's sound if it isn't Fun? The rating system is direly flawed.
