What kills me is that MMORPG.com capitulated so easily to a threat such as a frivolous lawsuit. This sets a precedent. That pecedent being, that if any developer or publisher doesn't like what is being said about their game - they can just threaten MMORPG.com with a lawsuit(frivolous at that) and have comments, articles, blogs or anything related to a game removed.
I don't think that precedent will be problematic. Apparently it has been site policy to delist a game if the developer requests it for a while; that policy game into play when World War II Online was delisted. Delisting a game does not mean that the game can no longer be discussed; see this thread, for example.
People who have never heard of your game will never buy it. Being listed on this site means that more people find out about your game than would otherwise. That basically constitutes free advertising for your game. Game companies usually benefit from having their game listed here.
You know, they told me this website was a place of internet journalism. And journalists should be motivated to let the truth be told, above all things.
But destroying a discussion forum, as if the games once listed were never listed, is not putting the truth first. It's putting politics first, or financial sense first, or legal advice first...but it ain't a serious committment to the story or the written record.
Whatever we may think, people took the time to write things. Express ideas and opinions. Some opinions might have been eloquent, or important. Of course, we won't ever know now, because the journalists here decided to kill access to those stories out of convenience.
That's why they ought to rethink this precedent. Because it isn't about what is in the interest of a game's PR. Once we go down that road, we'll see many more games--and former games, mind you--"disappear" as if they never were.
It's about telling the truth of what went on, that these things mattered to people like us, because we discussed them.

Welcome to the real world. Where journalists only report what they are paid to report, just like here. THe sstaff makes their money from advertising from game developers, so they are beholden to not buring bridges with developers. So when a company wants negative comments removed, they will be. Happened before, happened now and will happen again.
In this day-n-age. we can not trust the press to report the truth or to be honest.

You know if Mr. Appleton would just buy some ad space here, the mods would be more than happy to delete posts and ban anyone who said anything negative about him or his game. Seems to me that might be a more effective use of his money as opposed to using it to bring frivolous lawsuits against people who hurt his feelings. Just a thought.

Yeah, Greed Monger and Appleton already have a pretty bad public image and rep. For what ever reason it seems they have decided to continue fanning the flames and making things worse.
Its sad to see the ideas behind this game (Which are just cherry picked from gaming forums lol) in the hands of a guy that seems completely incompetent.
Ah, so he's not threatening to sue this web site itself, but only to sue random people for posting on this site. Which is, in itself, a good enough reason for the site to say, fine then, we'll delist your game and not give you more publicity.
In other news, the plural of medium is media, not mediums.

What sane MMORPG developer wouldn't want his game listed on sites like this, at least if it's near release or has already been released? Trying to hide your game and make sure that no one finds out that it exists is not a way to get more customers.
One could think of delisting Greed Monger as a way for this site to sanction the Jason for bad behavior.

Actually, by his own admission and that of Bill Murphy he did both.

Journalists? This isn't Reuters, it's an opinion based website. You're confusing Roger Ebert (R.I.P) with CNN.

I thought I would never see a company that more deserved public disdain than StarVault but I have been proven wrong! I think I am going to have to do some research on this company/game and I just may have found a new hobby/reason to visit a variety of public forums and speak THRUTH.
You forget about Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment.

I can't help but wonder what this guy will do if his MMO ever launches. Thats when people are really going to start throwing insults at him unless the damn thing is perfect and we all know that is unlikely. He better have a lot of lawyers.
But I guess I do need to admit I feel bad for Jason and OP. For OP mainly because there will most likely be repercussions whether or not he sues and if he does, whether or not he wins or loses. As such, I hope, you too will be able to look back and say that this entertainment has been worth it:)
On a slightly more serious aspect, this might just prove to be one of the innumerous nails to the coffin of internet anonymity, if we are unlucky... Jason might be exactly as many ppl here have said, but personal attacks against those without the protection of anonymity or corporation will hurt, especially if they are not nolifers. This case alone won't do much, but I'm guessing it won't take too many until coorporation protected devs will take notice and that's when things might actually start to happen... doom & gloom:D Hope you guys are enjoying your bashing^^

In most cases, 'mediums' is acceptable. Very few people (except maybe a few lawyers) are really that pedantic. Considering the colloquial nature of the email, it seems perfectly acceptable. On the other hand, if you just want to throw a cog in how seemingly official his intent is, then by all means. . . .
am i the only one who think taus1 goes too far? i mean, i read mogus messages to him and to mmorpg and all i read is, that taus1 should stop telling lies about him and call him a scammer. i see nothing wrong with his messages.
taus1 is on a personal crusade and nothing better than mogus.
in fact, all threads about this should be deleted, to protect mogus from himself.
only way for him to prove everybody wrong is to bring out a playable at least average game.

Since when is it the responsibility of privately owned sites to protect idiots from destroying their own reputation on the internet?
both sides go too far, taus1 and mogus.
i just feel pity with mogus, because he is constantly doing harm to himself and he doesnt stop to. yeah, pity! protect him from himself and delete it.
its not being about someone anonym talking shit, its a war between someone anonym with someone with a real name. taus1 is taking this too far. mogus is not able to handle this right (and stop writing anything here.)
I don't really care much for the game, but if Appleton promises to keep up creating threads like this every couple of weeks I'll fund whatever kickstarter he throws our way. Heck, I'd even pay him a subscription fee. This has been the best MMORPG-related entertainment I've had in a while.

Care to point out where Taus01 has gone too far though? All he has done is list the random crap that Appleton has done and draw a conclusion from it. One that is pretty logical, even after reading the stuff that Appleton has attempted to use to sway opinion to his side. The defamation of character are particularly funny, since after looking over the piles of crap Appleton has done, I most certainly would not allow him to get anywhere near my money. If anything he should be punished further for attempting to hide such information.

I read the whole post. You're suggesting that mmorpg.com should delete the whole discussion to "protect Appleton from himself". I ask again: since when is it the responsibility of privately owned sites to protect individuals from behaving stupidly?
The responsibility here is Appleton's and his alone; he's a grown-up after all, and also a businessman trying to sell an MMO. While I agree some people take trolling and bashing way to far, that's just the way of things around here. If you as a dev can't handle it in a professional manner, then you should reconsider being a dev in the first place, or just refrain from reading forums like these.
Trying to be a badass about it like you would irl, flexing your muscles all over the place and acting all big and mighty, will just net you more contempt and ridicule. But apparently this guy thinks it's the way to go and nobody can help him but himself.
