unfortunately with the size and budget the game already has, if they took the time to invest into a "Space Sim" the cost would have gone up even more. Not to mention delaying the release date by a good chunk. The time they released their game at was the absolute best time. if they had tried to directly compete with GW2, TSW and Tera in the release dates SWTOR would be even worse off than it is now.
The game is a decent game. However Funcom and Anet are Juggernauts of the buisness. and Tera with how they designed that game to play was something new into the MMO genre aswell. SWTOR being a Traditional MMO just wouldnt stack up because all 3 of these games brought something new. the only thing SWTOR brought was Voice overs, and even they were in other games.
gw2 is terrible, swtor is terrible, there are no juggernauts in this industry. Sometimes changing the interface, or making everyonea utility dps class and calling it innovation isn't what it was cracked up to be and people catch on to it.
The secret is this, the interface, whackamole or rpg combat, isn't that important, it is the world. Games don't make worlds any more and the content sucks. If the content is good and different, your interface could be an absolute wow/eq clone. Action combat is over rated, if it was that important one of these action combat games would be more succesfful. the only succesful mmo on the market right now is wow, and that is rpg combat, people are comfortable with it, people like it.
good content is the key and no one is providing it.
And I bet that even if Pazaak and swoop racing is put in game that it will be popular wth a small group of people for a bit then nobody will bother will it again. Reminds me of fishing. I always read on forums how great fishing is yet when I played WOW and RIFT I never saw more than one or two people at a time by a lake fishing.
The binoculars and the seeker droid are awesome ideas for me. People can do those dailies along with the other dailies (at least on Makeb). If the content "connects", I tend to enjoy it more. If it does not connect at all (space missions) I get bored easily. Pazaak and swoop racing would probably not connect with my daily routine and for me they will probably be cool for like a week, then I'll get bored.
As an elder WoW player and a new TOR player, i find the way they approached dailies in TOR to be far superior. The dailies are quick. The group quests and the weekly missions encourage doing those dailies with others. On my server, in the evenings, places like SectionX and Black Hole are packed with people. The players tend to act better than in WoW, as their reputation matters more - "old-school" things happen more often - people put other people in friends list based on their attitude ingame -> jerks tend to be avoided. Overall, even with the obvious flaws (lack of an animated world, corridors, lack of content) the game is much much better than most people advertise it on these boards. Never thought that I'm gonna be playing this as my main MMO, but now I'm happy I've had the strength to get past the flaws I've mentioned.
I like the new dailies as well. The seeker droid stuff is like mining for gold because you have to move around the area in order to score a hit. Between Section X and Black Hole I tend to the Black Hole more as I can finish it within an hour. I still have'nt finished the main storyline on Makeb yet becase of the seeker and Macrobiocular dailies. At some point I need to get back and finish that.
I am not doing Black Hole anymore as quests are giving only classic comms comparing to classic and basics for Section X (winner) and Makeb for basics and reputation. Waiting for Tuesday to get my Hero reputation LOL.
Is the world still lifeless? Is it still technically possible to add more life to NPCs and creatures in the world? Are the devs thinking in adding it later on?

I agree that seeker droid and macrobinocular quests are adding a new taste to the game. I love to do them. It's definitely something different from anything I played in any MMO...
Daily quests are fast and with meaningful rewards... lots of hopping from mesa to mesa is making them more interesting. Working on them with friends make is easy, fast and enjoyable.
Agree with this. The fact Bioware is finally adding non-combat content in the game (being the macrobinocular and seeker droid updates) makes me enjoy the game even more.
Originally posted by bugmeno ... this game would have a much better standing! It´s actually a pretty decent game, clearly better than on release.Imagine they would not have invested time into the space rails and rather announced a big space sim with the release, and show something of it!A lot of "would have´s" but hopefully the game is on the right track now and they skim through the tons of suggestion.Still needs Pazaak, swoop racing, space casino, improve the feeling of the lame ass speeders, giving more life to the planets(day night change), sandbox elements and expand the planets, add a really good "Privateer/EvE" type space sim then it will be perfect.SWTOR 3.0 maybe?
I liked the game apart from 2 things:
-the engine not handling many models in 1 area, effectively killing off good PVP battles and lagging up areas with many NPC's in it.
-PVP stunbattle wars....
Would still be playing -and subbing- if those were fixed.

From what I've seen, and granted I uninstalled this piece of garbage a year ago this month, but not much that really bothered me about the game has changed. Nor will it.
1) Worlds are completely lifeless and boring. Most planets have at most 3-4 species of creatures on them and your job is commit genocide on at least two of them.
2) Static, cardboard NPC's just standing around like XP pinatas waiting for someone to beat on them. I mean really, what in the world is a sith lord doing staning around in an otherwise completely empty field all day long. No one is ever *doing* anything. They just stand there waiting to be beat up on.
3) No day/night cycles in a 2012 release. Just wow.
4) Load screens of death. Every place you want to go to is 15 load screens and an 8 bit cutscene away.
5) Ilum. wtf. Where is it?
6) Three battlezones and the only one you ever get is freaking huttball. I hear there's a fourth one now. That's just great... all this time and one more battlezone. Bravo.
7) PVP is completely gear dependent. If you don't have gear, then just get raped or go do something else with your time. Oh, and since you'll need to PVP in order to earn gear, then don't even bother at all. You'll just die in 1-2 shots all day long for a pair of gloves. If that's your idea of fun, then I have a brick wall you can beat your head against for a couple hours a day.
8) Starfox. wtf is starfox doing in my Star Wars? If you can't put real space combat in the game, then don't put anyhting in. A 1997 era placeholder just makes the game look stupid.
9) Red walls everywhere. One of the most horribly instanced games I've ever seen.
10) The entire game is corridored. You land on a planet and you want to explore and find things to do. Instead you land to be confronted with a bazillion exclamation points and land features that are designed like a railroad track to lead you straight to your next area. Land in a city and think you can get somewhere easily? Think again, they even manged to corridor the cities in order to make the gameplay as linear as possible.
11) Stories are all pretty lame with the exception of the Imperial Agent and Smuggler. All other stories are as forgettable as what you had for breakfast last week. This won't change at all since they don't have the voice acting budget anymore.
12) Companions are locked in by class... which sucks. I want a wookie companion as a consular. Why can't I have one? Not only that, but the Consular's companions are ALL terrible. I wouldn't want to have half those dorks on my team, and the only one that I DO want on my team is a carbon copy of myself so I don't get any complimentary skills if I use her.
13) Character creation. In a game that's all about story, you should be able to make a highly unique character. Instead you get the choices of absurdly skinny humanoid, absurdly fat humanoid, absurdly tall humanoid, or what almst everyone picks the rather average humanoid. No other sliders at all, just pick a face and a body and be prepared to join the game looking like everyone else.
I could probably come up with another dozen points if I cared to sit and remember, but honestly the five minutes it took just to throw up these 13 points is more time than this piece of garbage game deserves.

Though I agree that I would like to see more life, day night cycles, immersion type stuff, better social areas, etc, most of your other complaints sound like ridiculously over dramatic reactions.
Originally posted by observer I disagree. The game still suffers with leveling alts, questing, class specialization, exploration & closed off zones, bloated UI that takes too much real estate on screen, etc. The list goes on. There are many positives though, but the negatives outweigh them.

If any of what I said is "ridiculously over dramatic" then you, sir, have extremely low standards for a modern game with a nearly 200 million dollar development cost.
I play SWTOR from beta and it was major disapontment for me after i dinged lev 50. Came back again 6 months ago and i had fun must admit but not for long.
I re-subed again few days ago and took expansion. I am having a blast !!!
Game is fantastic right now and I dont see in long time i will cancel sub.
BTW, Macrobinocular quest line no matter how boring it might be but the last 4 man quest is the best thing I ever saw in any MMORPG cause it is EPIC !!!

PvP isn't or wasn't gear dependent at all. I used to pvp at max lvl, with no pvp gear at all, and still survive. PvP is even better now, since they made changes to the Bolster system.

FIVE warzones. Well stop my beating heart. I'm amazed. Personally, however, I can't seem to grasp how warzones could be that hard to generate.
I can build a fully functional dungeon using the Creation Kit for Skyrim in about seven days. That's placing every wall, every patch of foliage, cobweb, water puddle, candle, table, chair, fork, treasure chest, barrel... ect. Placing and leveling all of the NPC's, linking all of the NPC's to a patrol path, placing all of the lighting, setting traps, creating puzzles, placing sound effects, placing fog effect, creating a navmesh, hand editing the navmesh, creating lines of sight... all of that in under seven days.
Now, I don't know what tool set these guys are using to create the game world, but looking at how few items there are in the world compared to the world of Skryim, I can't imagine it taking more than two weeks to creat a new warzone from scratch. The fact that the game has been out this long and there are only FIVE of them, is just ridiculous. There should be TWENTY FIVE warzones at this point, so I'm not impressed.
As for your second disagreement; I'm not sure what this bolster change is all about, but I'm 100% certain that when I quit playing there's no way in hell that my Consular Shadow was going to beat an Inquisitor Assassin if the assassin was fully kitted out in PVP gear. Unless the new bolster system is also providing the same bonus's that PVP gear provides, then I can't imagine it being different.

To be fair it's a bit more complex than that. Good instanced pvp is a lot like a good raid encounter. Both generally require some amount of actual coding for one-off game mechanics and tend to need a lot more balancing and QA time than most content does.
And in the case of SWTOR, since the developers either refuse or are unable to implement a more complex queue system and cross-server instancing, more warzones also means players spend less time in their favorite warzone. But yeah, they certainly could have done more than they have.
About bolster, all they've really done is flip-flop between designs, originally pvp gear was practically the same as pve, it traded a small amount of the stat budget for a pvp-only stat. People who pve'd complained that it was effectively the same as "welfare epics" from back in BC WoW, which it was. So they changed the stat budget to be much more pvp stat heavy, this gave pvp a steeper gearing curve. Now we're back to pvp gear being "welfare epics" and they've made bolster compensate for anyone who doesn't have pvp gear by putting them at very near the same stats as the first new tier of pvp gear. Or that's how I understand it's intended to work, sadly I believe it still doesn't, but supposedly in the next patch! Heh.
It is still not good enough to compete with Tera, It is a Dull instanced game. I have tried over and over to get even past level 40 without hitting extreme boredom.
If 2.0 was 1.0 nothing much would change because its just more of the same...even less because most hyped and interesting part (by BW) is missing...class stories.

Tera has fun combat but the leveling is the most boring I have ever experienced. There is literally one path for levelling for all classes and races, at least as far as I've seen because I've never gotten a character past level 30. If I never see the Isle of Dawn again it'll be too soon. I can't make myself do it again. It's probably fine since friends have told me that the end game is practically non-existent.

It is a bit bewildering when you consider that SWTOR was supposed to be Aces in the PVP department since they had what was left of Mythic designing it.
Mythic has succesfully designed over 30 scenarios (warzones) in addition to Open PVP lakes and RvR areas for Warhammer Online.
instead of capitalizing from Mythic's expertise, innovations, and hard lessons learned, as someone pointed out earlier, Bioware chose to emulate Vanilla WoW's warzone system.
It's headscratching, Bioware abandoned WAR's public quest system (Which GW2 gobbled up), abandoned the Tome of Knowledge (which was neater then the achievement/codex/whatever system), and most importantly ignored the hardest lesson learned from WAR, 2 faction PVP (especially OPVP) is doomed to failure if individual server based.
Seems everyone was trying to sweep WAR under the carpet, but WAR had several innovations, and some successes. (They reduced their OPVP to 120 man, SWTOR struggles at 8 vs. 8) WAR tried to go beyond mirrored PVP classes (and learned that class balance had to be addressed sooner then soon.) In a way I feel bad for the Mythic hold outs. PVP seems to have often been an afterthought in SWTOR.
As I said, Mythic's WAR had a rotation of 30+ scenarios (warzones) and a very effective bolster system (GW2 copied a lot from there as well.) I'm guesing the PVP team was besset by problems from the outset, which became much more glaring then the PVE side of things.
Ilum was not supposed to have a slideshow frame rate. Illum's nodes were not to be insta-capped. Ilum was supposed to have interactive NPCs and vehicles; all scratched off the PVP team's list to get the product out the door for x-mas 2011.
As to SWTOR only having 5 warzones (and no more Ilum), this is partly a function of the lay-offs in general. No new PVE has come out since the layoffs. Everything had been either completed or extensively worked on PVE-wise prior to the lay-offs and just stockpiled.
The beleaguered PVP team did manage to get out the Gree event, and attempt (badly) a new 2.0 PVP bolster system. As easy as it is to make fun of SWTOR's PVP team, they have actually made more new things then the PVE side since the layoffs.
Then again, it's easier to say the worthwhile talent from Mythic wound up on TESO. (WAR and DAOC refugees.)
If 2.0 was 1.0 nothing much would change because its just more of the same...even less because most hyped and interesting part (by BW) is missing...class stories.

Nope. WoW doesnt have real cash shop with all the latest ingame stuff, and it has free content updates.

So like World of Warcraft then?
Nope. WoW doesnt have real cash shop with all the latest ingame stuff, and it has free content updates.
exactly,,blizzard are very careful with their cash cow,,milking it to the absolute limit
bioware just hooked their cow up to a vampirex 8000, and waited for the benefits
As guild lider on tor and as old swg player, i just want to say 'i HATE the fucking comendation system'.... I HATE 90% Clothes, I HATE the no inmersion in planets... I've 90 rank valor and I HATE the expertise stat. . The crafting is a joke, the galactic trade market is other joke, the space system other joke more big, now the mail have more importance than the fucking game and for all this reassons i not buy the expansion yet and i closed the account....
BRING SWG BACK! Fuck $0€ and EA and the assholes of bioware too....
so,,you want to close a failed game, to bring back an older game, with even worse player retention?
It is a bit bewildering when you consider that SWTOR was supposed to be Aces in the PVP department since they had what was left of Mythic designing it.
I know I can't think of a good reason. If the higher-ups considered all things WAR to be poison to MMO development, why use people who worked on that game on SWTOR? And if there was no hatred of WAR, then why weren't the people they brought over able to bring to bear even the smallest bit of their experience from WAR's pvp to SWTOR?
I've pretty much given up trying to understand why these things happened, and continue to happen with SWTOR though. Even the players confuse the heck out of me. "Bring back Ilum!" is an almost constant demand, and yet Ilum was completely worthless from the get go. The only time it ever got much pvp interest was during the valor exploit there, the Gree event had almost no interest for pvp-minded players unless they wanted to grief some pvers. Otherwise it was just a few people who were desperate enough for the extra comms from doing the daily/weekly there. Why would anyone want that back?
Comments
gw2 is terrible, swtor is terrible, there are no juggernauts in this industry.
I am not doing Black Hole anymore as quests are giving only classic comms comparing to classic and basics for Section X (winner) and Makeb for basics and reputation. Waiting for Tuesday to get my Hero reputation LOL.

Agree with this. The fact Bioware is finally adding non-combat content in the game (being the macrobinocular and seeker droid updates) makes me enjoy the game even more.
I liked the game apart from 2 things:
-the engine not handling many models in 1 area, effectively killing off good PVP battles and lagging up areas with many NPC's in it.
-PVP stunbattle wars....
Would still be playing -and subbing- if those were fixed.
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
There Is Always Hope!
I couldn't have said it better myself.
Those are the two points i disagree with you, but the rest i somewhat agree with.
Heh.
So like World of Warcraft then?
Nope. WoW doesnt have real cash shop with all the latest ingame stuff, and it has free content updates.

Thanks for stopping by to post what you didn't like about the game a year ago, and how you haven't played it since... I guess you still didn't like the game a year ago. I have no idea why you come to the SWtoR section of these forums anymore, but thanks all the same.
i know why,,he wants a star wars mmo..but a GOOD one
lets see how long it takes, before we get one
