who cares?? at least all the bad players gets shifted to WoW and all the good players can peacefully play in peace and harmony with better mmorpgs - and not WoW.

Most MMORPGs? Care to name some predictions? As it currently stands, the only MMORPGs that have been cancelled that I know of after they went retail are Earth and Beyond and Asheron's Call 2. Hell, even Meridian 59 is still around. Everyone gets this impression that people will play 1 MMORPG and ONLY 1 MMORPG. I bet many people who play World of Warcraft also other MMORPGs simultaneously.
World of Warcraft has 2.5 million players but expecting it to shoot up to 10 million players is just being fanboyish. Also, a game does not need more than a million players to turn a profit.
All the children of the world can play WoW for all I care(and they do!).
Playing against other adults in Shadowbane is fun (tho some adults act like kids lol).
Only bad thing about WoW is it takes the sheep from the wolves.. so the real games become wolf vs wolf with no sheep to prey on..

MMOs Retired From: Earth and Beyond, Project Entropia, There, A Tale in the Desert, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Eve Online, City of Heroes/Villains.
MMOs Currently (worth) Playing: None.
MMO hopefuls: Age of Conan.
I agree with you there Dinion, but that can mean a bad thing to the market too. Now the companies see the market's true potential and will be more and more geared to mass subscriptions, which could lead to lesser overall quality of games.
World of Warcraft and other new titles, as pointed out by Dinion, made a huge increase in the number of MMOG players, WoW in particular, being based on a successful RTS title and having done a very good advertising campaign. The vast majority of World of Warcraft players had no experience with MMOGs in the past. Previous MMOG titles either kept a stable player base or had a slight decrease (for which they took action to deal with, offering new trials, expansions or free re-opening of cancelled accounts), which indicates that WoW sales are of no threat to competition.
Instead, I think the MMOG market still has a lot of margin for competition and the MMOGs that are currently under development and offer original content, like PotBS and Roma Victor (instead of being just another L2-clone or based on the cliches of medieval fantasy) have a good possibility for commercial success.
Currently playing:
* City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant.
* City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.
At least eve fanbois actualy play the game they rave about
As for companies targeting mass subsriptions, don't they already do that ? just because they want as many people as they can get doesn't mean they'll get it. Blizzard has been around for a long time making great games like diablo, starcraft and warcraft. They had a huge fan base going into wow, and that's how ended up with so many.
Where on earth did you come up with WoW 10 million subscribers?
Worldwide it is L2 which has the higher of the 2 games although I think the margin is closing.
Your information is very incomplete, and very flawed.
1. WoW's target market was Blizzard fans first. 95% of Blizzard fans have never, ever, NEVER, played a mmorpg. This means the majority of WoW players are NOT being taken from other mmorpgs.
2. Blizzard fans come from 3 of some of the most recently successful computer games in history. The Diablo I, and Diablo II, game series alone have sold roughly 17 million copies. We have not even talked about Blizzard's other games yet. Yes, stores still sell the ancient Diablo I on their shelves!!!
3. Most mmorpgs have already re-couped their game developement costs. It is NOT about mmorpg vs mmorpg. It is ALL about if a mmorpg recoups its own game developement costs. A mmorpg can have 500 total players. It will be doing fine as long as it re-coups its game developement costs. The majority of other mmorpgs have 100k to 300k players. They ARE indeed hit games. They are indeed making insane money. Unless you consider 1+million per month nothing? LOL!
4. Who's opinion has more weight? Yours, or what Lord British recently said when he talked about WoW. Lord British said WoW's success is the perfect thing all other mmorpgs need. The more successful WoW beocmes, the more successful all other mmorpgs become, as all those WoW players discover mmorpgs. The ONLY reason they tried a mmorpg is because they are mindless followers of Blizzard. Blizzard has FORCED them to check out mmorpgs, which leads to them checking out other mmorpgs.
Your point is moot. Your arguement is moot. Now find the mmorpg you like, and play it, enjoy it. Stop worrying about if other players like and enjoy other mmorpgs. Stop worrying about the fact that other mmorpgs will not go out of buisness. No matter how many players WoW has. BTW, did you know many players play BOTH WoW and other mmorpgs?

As someone already pointed out I don't see a whole lot of games rolling over and sticking their feet in the air. E&B was a decent niche game but for some ungodly reason EA's (mis) management decided they did not want a MMORPG in their line up . Probably too high maintenance compared to their other titles. AC2 lived a lot longer than most thought it would. The game was flawed from the start and really should have never made it to release in my opinion.
Next year we may or may not see many other good releases such as LoTRO for the PvE crowd and PoBS promises some decent PvP action. Not to mention a bunch of others that look like they may be good in various ways. Age of Conan, Vanguard, Hero's Journey to name three.
I think WoW will peak sometime this year unless they manage to add some other dimensions and depth a lot of it's current players will drift to other MMO's. Actually I think that is already happening to a degree. It's new subscribers are mostly in Asia and the Pacific rim I would guess. But that is just a guess, I don't have any figures on that so if anyone does you might want to throw them up here.
Anyway just my opinion here but I think MMORPG's are in the best shape they have ever been in, many choices for many different play styles and that is a good thing. Now if I can just find one that will re spark my interest again
I miss DAoC
All excelent points Xplororor, about the only thing I would dissagree with would be your first point, that WoW is not taking any population away from the current crop of mmo players.
For example, I personally feel that if WoW had been a really bad game or had not been developed at all, EQ2 would be doing much better then it is now, not to say that it's performing badly in terms of numbers but I believe it would be much better then it is now.
I think a great deal of WoW's players are comming from all three sources, Blizzard/Warcraft fans, New players and Existing MMO fans/players.
Important Information regarding Posting and You
My favorite MMORPG was Asheron's Call. You leveled up but you got to spend the skill points on whatever you wanted...running, jumping, clothes dying, strength, whatever. It was really cool. I was not financially independant back then so I eventually got bad grades and was forced to quit. I played WoW for about 3 weeks...got to level 30...and decided it wasn't really much different from the free mmorpgs. It was Blizzard's name that got the fanbase. All you can do is grind in that game. All my friends who used to play it are quitting. I really want to play Asheron's Call again, I was gonna play AC2 but it's cancelled. WoW isnt the next Everquest so I don't think it'll keep gaining players. Here are two of my questions...Does Asheron's Call still have tons of players? And what are the reasons that Everquest was so popular? I'm gonna start paying to play so I wanna decide on an MMORPG that has longevity, roleplaying, a good community, and a lot of features.
Actually, WoW's current population is 4.5 million+...there is a press release on Blizzard's site I'm sure if you look in the archives.
And where on earth did you get L2's numbers ?
He's a stat for you. 90% of stats people use on forums, they made up to support whatever argument they're trying to win.
Ohhh, the irony, anyway, does it matter WoW has so many subscribers? Obviously people enjoy playing it, so they keep on playing until they get bored.

No Userbar here, sorry to disappoint.
I really am not a fanboy for Worlds of Warcraft, but I believe that the original posters preminition of 10 million on WoW in a year is pretty accurate. It has right now 5 million active subscriptions. When the new update comes we might see an influx of players returning to WoW; especially with the implementation of things the players wanted from early on; like un-capped servers, linked Auction Houses, a hot horde race, battlegrounds, and being able to hit level 75.
I would have to say that WoW's popularity in the States in particular will make other mmo developers to shift thier gameplay mechanics; like how players dont like level grinds yet most mmo's implement them.
WoW does nothing new but everything it does do it does well.
The only weak spot with WoW is its PVP. In that the war between the horde and the alliance is vastly weaker than DAOC's rvr. Sorry Shadowbane's PVP cannot compare.
As far as all the bad players playing WoW. That is a load of croc . I play it and I can bet good money I'm a better MMO player than most that have posted in this thread. Purely though the Bnet WoW kiddie thing is a myth propogated by those that feel threatened by WoW's success.
Either way though Lord British had it right. WoW success is bringing in new MMO players. When they get bored with WoW they might actually try crap titles like Shadowbane , Eve and even Horizons.
Bring on the star trek mmorpg! /geek

You got to be kidding, just because an expansion comes out for WoW it will get an additional 5 million players?! I dare to say 5 million people didn't quit WoW.
Only way Blizzard will add more numbers on is by going to other countries with thier monster marketing machine and importing new servers there.
How many subscriptions do they have in North America compared to the rest of the world.
