Total BS. SOE is a horrible company and they have no regard for the happiness of their customers. Every poll I've seen so far has been 80-90% against the NGE, how can anyone tell us it's a fun and interesting game with such an outcry against it? I, like many veterans, played Test Center before the NGE publish and have given it a fair try. I've played many hours after the publish as well and it just plain isn't fun once you're high level, PvP is also extremely difficult with lag and targeting issues. The NGE was pushed out way too quickly just like almost every other major publish or change they've made to the game and has a tremendous ammount of bugs. Many disabled players find the NGE impossible as well and SOE has said nothing about making it any easier for them. SOE's correspondants and developers, such as Thunderheart and Brenlo, seem to have little to no knowledge of the major issues plaguing this game after the NGE and usually give the response, "I'm not sure, I'll put it on my list," yet none of these issues seem to be addressed. Commando weapons still don't work, which is a major reason for my leaving the game. One would think that having working professions before the launch of a major change to a 2 year old game would be important but those ones don't work for SOE. I'm sorry but I have to disagree with anyone that thinks this change is a good one, removing professions and completely changing a community's way of life is just not right.
Good review Rob, I was very honest. (I do think it's rating was a bit high)
You mentioned difficulty finding Armorsmith and Weaponsmits. I encourage you to log on and respec to trader. Try to craft 25 items and drop them on a vendor, not very easy in a FPS game.
And the fact they killed "Crafter end-game", with these really easily reached caps. No way for a skilled/veteran crafter to make better items.
Good editorial. I would have liked more emphasis on the pure gal of SOE/LA to give veteran players the boot in their mad quest to attract WoW-like numbers of new subscribers.
Good review. I redid my own rating of SWG and it falls into the same range. Still excellent in sound and grafics, but with the community wandering off SWG has lost much appeal.
Interview ... after the 6th hot-air-interview from SOE/LA representatives I am starting to get annoyed by their rhetorics. This is NOT the "Combat Upgrade" affair .... this time people are leaving for REAL and not only claiming to do so. THIS time people are REALLY pissed off and many wont ever touch a SOE product ever again. Sweet talking it wont change the fact that SOE/LA is facing a PR DESASTER that rivals the "Mourning" scandal.
We had 5 accounts and now all are cancelled. Playing is impossible , what was interesting and fun has been stripped away.
The worst part of all this however is SOE's appalling customer service, better to say non existant customer service. If you are a company wanting to see what NOT to do then take a look at what is happening with this game. SOE has done just about everything it can to alienate its CORE player base and drive them away.
Perhaps the NGE changes are good for some but for most of the intelligent long term Star Wars fans who looked for something more than just a fast paced shoot em up get xp and win this is not what we wanted.
Originally posted by wrxstiver2 What rubbish. I have had the game since launch and the ideals were always of GCW end game and a starwars experience. Do not try to tell me that you believe the "core structure" of the game was EVER about Jedi. We all know that the people you are trying to defend are Jedi characters that have lost all their uber status. Jedi are NOT the original players in this game. Your criticism is about 2 years too late. If you wanted to preach loyalty to the original players then you should be praising the fact that the game has been restored to its original focus on the GCW and immersion in the star wars experience. These changes are for the better, and anyone who believes in a balance system that is workable and fun is going to like the NGE. The old system was impossible to balance and way too many resources were being spent on the extremely vocal jedi population. The NGE does need to be polished, and it remains to be seen if these new ideas will be fruitfully reproduced in game, however they are definately on the right track, and as an original player, im glad someone finally grew some balls and did what needed to be done.
the more i read this, the more moronic you sound. saying that the post-NGE game is balanced is just ridiculous and the fact that you believe the pre-NGE game was more broken than this leads me to consider you may possibly be mentally retarded.
and if you seriously believe that too many resources were being wasted on the extremely vocal jedi population, WAIT. there are about 3000 posts in the other profession forums where the jedi profession forum has 30,000 so.... your remark is pointless and uneducated.
the GCW isn't ever going to return the way it was, and yes JEDI DID RUN THE GCW with slicing teams, how many bases have you blown up in 2 years? your just a cantina crawling carebear that likes to talk about the gcw and roleplay. i know your kind.
your a moron and i am happy i had the pleasure of tearing you apart. this game sucks! its at 1% of it's former glory
great editorial and review, I for once couldnt agree more with the editorial, it is a bold and maybe stupid move by SOE and LA, BUT i must also applaude their bravery. I on the other hand think that they just took that knife that was aimed at the games heart at the hit of the CU and drove it into it.
I cant honestly say that the game got better at all, but they said there will be 6months of fixing and so maybe we will see a good game in 6 months. But i will probebly never return to galaxies again althou it was my all time favorit game. Now im playing WoW but its not the same, i miss the community that i had in SWG I miss my friends that didnt move on to wow.
I like the idea of a classic server, just to let them see what off the 2 games gaines the more support, i mean it might hurt their income a little but in the end i belive they will save money as they can either shut down one or the other in the end but they migt end up with 2 games making alot off money for them and really drawing a larger crowd.
oh well my 2 cents, and i would give the game a 5 out of 10 as it still has the great graphics, nice sound and the quests are good BUT the combat system (wich is most of the game) is dragging the points down as i would give the combat system a 1 as it is working but it will cause alot off arm paines if u dont move it to a console where it now belongs
I was ok with SWG changes at first even if i was crying practicly since they took away my beloved Creature Handler proffesion but i figured oh well i would just have to deal with it besides i had just paid quite a pretty penny for the Mustufar expansion but now every time i log in all it is is stress and discontent from many (if not all older players) the new way to control the toons alone is reason enough for me to quit i am wondering if SWG will survive the stupidity that they have shown Darwin's theory will probably take its turn upon the monstosity that the lazy people at SOE/Lucus Arts have created.
I was really looking forward to the update having read all the propoganda - what a disappointment it turned out to be. The game is uncontrolable (always used the standard mmorpg control set up), bug ridden mess and as i have athritis in my hands, combat is also impossible as i needed ice after 5 mins of "fast paced combat". Total bollox and i want my sub money back!
I have always liked SWG even when it was still in beta. I did the trial and i was even better then i imagened. Yet i have never bought it because of the monthly payments. However i am planning to buy the game (still planning). But if there are loads of changed i would prefer a new trial to see how much the game has changed in these years.
They cant expect me to buy a game on 2 year old information. Text helps but it doesnt let you live the gameplay.
But alas, thats the only place they removed the bugs (you dont see the most serious profession bugs, because in trial you dont have the abilities yet that are not working).
But once you enter the "real world/game" and maybe even go above combat level 30 (where all the new quests are ended) you run into a wall of bugs (a mountain of bugs would be more accurate). Thats when frustration hits you like an express train.
Well, I think the player base is very dissapointed in the way they were treated.
NGE had potential....but missed the mark.
I logged in on the 23rd of November to see if I could chat with any of my friends, of the 190 people on my friends list only 1 was on.
I went looking for some people online to do some quests or hunts with and this is my result:
1 person in Theed, 2 people in Mining Outpost on Dant. and 5 people on Mustafar.
These 3 places are where the players meet or hang out. They were empty.
WOW, I think that a lot of the player base has left the game. This is something I am sad to see, I used to love SWG, I was a hardcore addict that played many hours per day.
I would support anybody if they decided to bring a pre-cu server online. I would activate my 4 accounts for that.
I'm just wondering why mmorpg.com is making a review on a game that shouldn't be classified anymore under mmorpg. Let's face it this game has become a mmoasg (massive multiplayer online arcade game) or fps.
Sorry Lucasarts/SOE i gave you're New Gaming Enhancment a change and you failed big time!!
I bought this game because i'm a fan of Star Wars IV the first movie. I bought it also because of its complexity, it's 2 speed gaming (combat & crafting). I loved it because my character had a soul, my soul not one of the (b)ionic soul you forced in my char, by taking away everything that made the game worth playing and putting my 4x$15/month in.
This what i understand by role playing.
Now its looks... i can't discribe it. It's just... nope can't find a word. I can say this: It doesn't feel like Star Wars anymore.
Maybe you should listen more to what you're "customers" want and not what some 10/15 year old wants.
btw in your review you listed the JTL expansions as a added value and also listed it as a pro in the review, this is undeniable. the FACT of the matter is that SOE had to provide JTL to new players as well as players in test center because those players without JTL didn't have the yt-1300 model (and other JTL aspects) to be able to progress through the new player tutorial. so it isn't really a freebee, just another example of soe's short sightedness and rushing a unfinished product. so i would research and ajust your review accordingly.
really what they need to do is rollback to beta and start over and do it right, to make the game better every single aspect of this game has been nerfed at some point and nothing has been fixed.
I have played SWG for over 2 years, and have been through almost all the changes since launch. Things like the CU's that have happened created issues with vet players, but they where "modifications" to the basic game in my eyes. With this NGE the game has become a different animal altogether. There are pluses and minuses in all the things SOE has done, and I continue to play it now because it is the only game that I have devoted time to, and developed friendships in. I can see the different sides represented in this thread and thought the articles on this subject by MMORPG where very insightful, not only to the history of the game but in educating any noob wanting to try it. I also agree with most of what the players have said in this thread in relationship to the game or SOE.
Now, having said all that, I do have personal feelings about their handling of the game that are mine and mine alone. I agree with the statements SOE has made about the game and I know they feel they are doing what is best for SWG. I see their marketing change, and that is what this is, and understand the direction they are going. Everytime I hear a vet complain about it I tell them all the same, if you dont like it then just go do something else, that , in the end is our only real say in the matter. That doesnt mean I dont sympathize with them or that I dont agree with their complaints, because in most cases I do. However, I feel this change that they have made, and it was done without notice to the community playing, was not fair in a business sense. Just like when the "grinding" started all over again on Mustafar after the NGE they cut the xp for creature missions. When they did that it was like telling us "listen , your not playing the new system the way we want you to, this is supposed to take a lot longer and be different then before" so they hacked the xp in what some people say is "punishment" for us continuing to play SWG the way we have for years.
The game is a "new" game, without getting into all the details that has happened over the years, which those of us reading this know about, that is the best way for me to put it. I still play it and will continue, but I came to this website yesterday to look at other games for the first time since I started playing SWG. I only have time and extra jack to play one game at the cost of this one, and I think that SOE really needs to think about that in their marketing, like was said here, in another post, it is one of the most expensive games out there to play. My only question is, since I have supported this game as a customer since early on, do I feel like I should continue to do so in the future just because? For whatever reason SOE felt it was needed to make this like all the other games out there, that was one reason I played it, because it wasnt. Im not a big FPS gamer, and loved the "community" aspect of SWG, that has evolved over the years but was still enjoyable, I dont see that continuing in its present form. I have played the NGE and have enjoyed parts of it, there are a lot of good things in there but I cant help but feel that SOE has "abandoned" the old players for a shot at something better, whatever that is, and I will probably not consider an SOE game in the future because of this. I put to much into this one to see this happen, and know it might happen again.
Thanks for this forum to express our views, and the insightful comments by those that have posted here, it is better then the SWG forums which seem to be polarized at the moment, as maybe they should be.
I agree with everything said in the editorial. I have been playing swg since july of '03. I, against my better judgement, came into this game in order to experience a star wars universe. And it was there from launch. A far more immersive title than had ever come before.
Here was a game that had cantina's jam-packed with people just talking, telling stories, enjoying each others company. If you needed a new weapon or some armor there were a plethora of well known and highly respected merchants on several worlds where for different fees you could buy what you needed. As the game progressed the quality of some of these merchants excelled as they found what worked best in every instance to provide what the community needed. There were other like the payless shoe sources, their quality was middling to good but their goods could be gotten at a discount. Star Wars Galaxies was a living breathing virtual world.
Then in an effort to bring jedi into the game the community was torn assunder as people dropped what they had been doing, and enjoying, in an effort to reach the pinnacle of the game. Many of these people soon left because they had destroyed, for themselves, what had made this game so great. Others, who are only recently cancelling their accounts, ignored these things and kept going with what they wanted to do (some kept doing what they wanted and purchased second or third accounts to explore jedidom).
The one thing SWG has always lacked was content being added on a regular basis, with the announcement of the CU we were told that it was because of how tightly interwoven everything was. With the CU we were told "that this will be a platform from which new and exciting content can be added on a regular basis." This of course was merely more misleading statements by the development teams. Because as the CU was rolling out to live work on the so called NGE had been going for several months. Yet no one in the community was being told what was happening.
We were promised revamps of several professions and some had been done on Bounty Hunters and Creature Handlers. Up coming ones were for rangers and smugglers. Now CH's and Rangers no longer exist. Still no content has been added to the core game after cl 30 ( I for one have 3 toons on 2 accounts, a jedi that I ground through, the alt which was designed as an anti jedi pvp template and my main which had been a ch longer than most of the dev team have had their jobs) and rather than a thriving living star wars world there is nothing happening of note anylonger.
There were people grinding to cl90 (as if knocking everyone off thier perch of complete templates is content or something) doing lava flea missions on mustafarr until yesterday when they nerfed the quest into uselessness. But other than that its stil lthe same 20 or 30 people pvping in theed, all the crafters and hybrid entertainers have left the game. Most of the people that were shouting about too many jedi in game are all now jedi.
The roleplayers are all gone and the server is a ghost town. Grats to the dev team, no one left to clamour for content because they all have left the game. Or rather the game was stolen from us.
Its like being a subscriber to playboy. Then one day you open up the magazine and instead of beautiful women and insightful articles its nothing but man on man sex pictorials.
2 accounts for over a year. This was my first time at bat with an MMO and I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.
CU drove out everyone I played with. I quit after a few months of it. I came back just before NGE, though that had nothing to do with it. I didn't find out about that untill after I had activated my accounts again.
So far this game is the same garbage it has been since they abandoned preCU. Every EP they add gets a chumpgrade. I have said this before, they are like a bunch of rubbies. They found a blue couch in the garbage and they redecorate the whole room to match it instead of just buying a a black one.
Sony Online Entertainment and Lucas Arts Entertainment forgot the tail end of their brands. Entertainment. They are at the bottom of the barrel in respect and when I have given them their obligatory 3 weeks, it looks like I will be deleting all my toons and killing my accounts. I won't make the mistake of having anything to come back to.

Boo. The review was biased. I agree about the jedi, however.

I have been playing swg for over 1year. and with nge crafting got downsized to much for me unfortunally
i hope they manage to save crafting or else it are dying from game.

That interview was ridiculous. The game is beter than ever ? How about the numerous bugs that make it near unplayable ???
maybe try and play the game some more before you write a review... lol
i mean never read so many "seems" and "guesses" in a review
Zimmy .. dont blame MMORPG for the interview. Other gaming sites tried to ask really pointed and direct questions ... and get the same (non-) answers.
SOE/LA are in full denial mode at the moment.

One thing I'd like to point out., as a lot of people seem confused on this:
LucasArts, not Sony Online Entertainment, develops and handles the game. SOE just publishes it.

Hi all;
NGE is an authentic TRASH. All my friends have left the game. My clan dissapear, and our two cities too. Is absolutly general deception.
Old players are torturated with continiosly changes. We worked a lot of hours for obtain jedi and now ... nothing
SOE steal his customers. and kill his game. I can not understand this low level profesionlity.
