Which game will people move too?

Vanguard seems to be an interesting game, but look how many games are going to be comming out at about the same time. There are Age of Conan, DDO, Dark and Light, Vanguard and a few others with the same anticipation rate of 7.1. Then factor in how many players are going to stick with their original MMORPG. (WOW, the EQs, ect..) I personally am going to try DDO first until Vanguard comes out. If both games are good I don't know what I'll do.

If Vanguard doesnt turn out good, ill quit MMORPG's.

DDO is i been told, all instanced (except for towns). That isnt a MMOG imo. This is the only other MMOG i was looking at, since ive quit EQ2 (and no i refuse to go back, deleted my characters to make sure).

Vanguard sounds like what EQ2 should have been, and with some stuff that EQ2 was hyped for but was taken out during beta, talk about false advertising.

I used to be a fanboy of EQ2 before its release, there was strong hype and hope for that game, but Vanguard has much different things, some new approaches, and probably the best experianced MMOG developer team on the NA+Euro market. Thats what makes Vanguards hype shine with a smile, rather than out of one's ass like most others.

I feel the same way, if it's not as good as what I'm hoping I'll probably quit gaming altogether image

You've got to admit though that D&D started it all. I have to give it a try instanced or not. I guess it will be something to do as I await vanguard. I read the vanguard forums though and get a feeling that it is going to be EQ1 all over again, but a little tweeked. Not that it is a bad thing. Can someone correct me on this? Is vanguard a revamped eq1?

  • sparkatbsparkatb Member UncommonPosts: 175
Yea, i guess it is a revamped EQ1, just slightly different, and hopefully better - which it deffinetly sounds like it is.

DDO is a horrid over instanced piece of garbage

they only 2 contenders atleast for my sub are DnL and V:SoH

DnL comes out in april and vanguard will prolly be pushed back so ill go SoG, then DnL, then Vanguard if everything goes according to plan image

I'll be going DnL to start. I'm also watching Conan closely. As to VSoH as a game I'll reserve judgement until beta. I do know however, judging from my experiences in the official forums, their community is the most unfriendly and unhelpful I've ever experienced in a game still in development. Even if the game turns out to be awesome the community better improve or I'll be giving this one a miss. Community in a MMORPG is very important to me.

Depend how you look at it. VG forum seems more mature but they can be preaty hard towards the softplayers. DnL there is a some very inmature that fill a lot on the board I guess it follows with PvP but if you look past that I think the player base are more social minded.

The Vanguard community is quite largely EQ1-centric, meaning they loved EQ and would like to see a fresh take on the same game design philosophies that went into it back then. Waves are made occasionally when people denounce those ideas more in favor of the approach WoW has taken. That's where you might see a bit of culture clash.

However, as far as the maturity of the community goes, I've not seen a better one yet, and I've been a part of many. We are united for the most part in that we want a long and lasting MMORPG experience rather than a situation where milestones are served up on a silver platter.

Give the Vanguard community a chance. You'll be glad you did.

One word of advice though: read a FAQ or two and use the Search function before posting. image A lot of us have been around for a while now, and can't be expected to be thrilled to answer the same questions day after day after day... especially when much of it is right there in a FAQ.

I'm no kiddie, mature family man, been playing MMORPGs since I beta tested The Realm in 1996. I'm no soft player.

I got flamed to hell in the VSoH forums for *no* good reason. I'm very careful when I visit a new forum. I always read the rules etc. The posts I made were polite and on topic. I made no contentious posts. I know better than to go onto a game's forum and slag that game, or promote another. I would never do that because I hate that kind of thing myself.

Actually it reminded me of the kind of activity that went on in the Usenet Everquest newsgroup, when that was very active back in the day, where the self-proclaimed EQ illuminati would dump on anyone that dared to have an opinion that differed from their own even one iota, and enjoyed giving newbies a hard time just for their own amusement.

I don't know why. Perhaps I was just unlucky and chose the wrong week to check out the VSoH web site and forums? All I know is that that what *I* saw of the community didn't impress me, which was surprising because I expected the kind of played attracted to VSoH to be far more mature than the players of the certain other well know games.

Perhaps..I've been a community member there since mid 2004, and while the Vanguard community is by nature a hardcore centric community, I've never been flamed to hell by anyone there...now that it's starting to receive hype, one can expect that immature idiots will slowly start flocking to the boards, and ruin it for the new guys coming in......

Give it some time bud, and I think you'll grow to like many intelligent posters there.......

Every forum has all sorts of people in them. I meen i think this mmorpg forum is the most childest/immature forum i have ever used. Theres always plenty of mature posters and immature posters on all forums, and lets face it... if we were all mature - life would be quite boring image
  • VegalordVegalord Member Posts: 40

No. Given the concept and the focus on travel it is not going to be another EQ1. Also, the game is more group-centric in design and less raid-centric. This will be somewhat like a new age kunark/velious era style group system but with completely different combat and travel mechanics.

EQ2 is solo to small group focused and with compleatly removed risk and challenge for normal group size. Vanguard hopefully fill in that. EQ2 also have a no challenge rewards system I exspect Vanguard to reintroduce risk vs. reward.

Please dont compare EQ2 to VG.

I can see vanguard been a great game and im sure it will have most of what i want in a mmo but i cant see it been the next wow in sales terms.

Ive never played wow but from what ive heard its a very easy game. Its brought alot of new ppl to mmo's.

The question is will ppl want a more immersive game like vanguard thats not as simple as wow or will they just play the next easy fun mmo that comes along?

Before and during EQ2's release, SoE said they are aiming EQ2 to attract solo group and raid, not focus on just one of those. Then shortly after release alot of people were whining how the game was focused heavily on grouping, so SoE nerfed the game and made it more solo. Then there was very little raid content, so they put in some boring raid content and still the game seemed like a focus on solo/group content.

In DoF there is a heavy amount of (full) group content (boring at that), with crap solo and raid stuff.

As it is atm, EQ2 is very group orientated. The risk vs reward is, well... low. Raid type risk vs reward is figuring ways around bugs... sigh. But those people playing that game are happy to pay to test the content that its developer obviously doesnt test in-house.

Hopefully Vanguard wont have half as many bugs as EQ2 does/had. Im looking forward to check out what the "experianced" developers at Sigil can do.

Btw, regarding risk vs reward. SoE have dumbed down EQ2 - risk vs reward was higher before than it has been lately. Yet there seems to be alot of newer people starting up playing the game, it seems that alot of people favour low risk vs reward. Myself i love risk vs reward, and so do what seems like most of the old skool MMOG players.

We are not so few that is not happy with the current games out there and dont want another wow. I read about wow during development and just knew it was not a game for me. Some days I can find fun in easy grinding but most of times I get bored with no challenge and avoid it. I want fun and challenging games not wow clones. I know I am not alone I know there is a market for games that offer it.

I won't let it put me off. As I say it could have just been unlucky and I posted in the wrong threads at the wrong time, and met the dolts first. I'll still be watching VSoH as one of the few forthcoming games I have high hopes for.

What was the thread about? & when did you post it? I have noticed that since Beta 1 came people on the boards have been quick to jump on anyone posting about PvP, The silvery Cord and TLC Those topics get jumped on real quick, and im not suprised alot of new poster don't bother to read to the FAQ or use serach and post the same stuff over and over again, however what ive now seen happerning is that any topic that even touchers on any of those areas (PvP etc) get shot down real fast even if they ask new questions or bring up new points or ideas. Its setterling down again now, everyone got the email to apply to beta (for the most part) and now the "beta crazy" crowd have gone away and we are left with the real poster who are fans of the game and not just after a beta spot. image

Glad to see it didnt put you off, no doubt in my mind the VG community is by far the best ive seen, just went thought abit of a ruff patch with beta coming out.

  • RedRabRedRab Member UncommonPosts: 280

Yep, it was in one where TLC/PvP was being mentioned. Thing is, as I said already, I read the rules. The posts I made were polite, on-topic and I made no contentious posts, well not that I would consider contentious in any way. I was just a little taken aback by the reactions I got, which seemed extreme .

I'm sure you are correct, however, and It will settle down after the grab bag goes.
