Well if I was to talk about sp rpg's, I would have to say an open, persistent world, where my actions have some sort of noticeable effect on the world. But alas we are talking about mmorpgs, so it would have to be a properly working, and customizable chat function.
edit: Sorry my mind makes up things sometimes, mmos not mmorpg, ignore the first sentence.
One thing I haven't seen mmos explore yet is the evolution of both a story and the world with it.
What stories and cities a mmo start with today would change over time with new stories, campaigns, enemies, and disasters. Old players would have experienced all of those events while new players have no way to experience them unless a new world server was started. What king there was on the first year of the game may not be there for the second of his whole kingdom was destroyed.
I havent seen a mmo with this level of progression and evolution yet.
Deep, complex and creative character advanecment. Lots of possible ideas and things on what the character can become / evolve to (skills, unique feats choises, talents etc) that seperate each character from each other even beetween same class characters is very important to me.
If I want to take a break, I need to be able to hit the ground running. If I am unable to take a break, I will just burn myself out.

I'll 2nd open world player housing. Not because it's the most important feature (though an extremely cool one), but because a game with that feature is likely to be awesome all around.
If you decide to play Final Fantasy: All The Bravest, we hope you don’t like money, because the game is going to try and take all of it. Stuck in a battle and out of turns? Wait until the gauge fills up or pay to continue. That’s how it is for the entire game: wait or pay.
Some games may end up looking like cash grabs despite pure intentions, but others are obvious money plays from launch. All The Bravest is a perfect example of trying to cash in on a name as much as possible, and hopefully the majority of players were smart enough to avoid it.
There is no one feature as it depends entirely on the game experience that is intended. A puzzle based mmo does not have to have traditional dungeons, or even classes. What good is housing if your character is a ship for example? The only truly inherent constant that is required for an mmo to function is human interaction, generally on a grand scale. Everything else is up for grabs and can be changed, or molded, or tweaked to the creators whims.
I did battle with ignorance today, and ignorance won.
To exercise power costs effort and demands courage. That is why so many fail to assert rights to which they are perfectly entitled - because a right is a kind of power but they are too lazy or too cowardly to exercise it. The virtues which cloak these faults are called patience and forbearance.

I love this one, but Housing is mine.
Pick-up playability.

For me this Wait or PAY thingy.

Hedonismbot: Your latest performance was as delectable as dipping my bottom over and over into a bath of the silkiest oils and creams.
