Have you ever seen a group of people so desperate for their next fix as MMO gamers?
We just keep getting hosed down by game developers...
If you went to a department store and bought a toaster...
Let's say this toaster says "BETA" on the box. What are your expectations of the product inside?
Does it make toast? It should do that, right? It is a toaster. If you sell a toaster it should make toast.
So what about that pesky "BETA" thing on the package? Maybe it doesn't toast bagel's yet or something. Maybe it hasn't passed all of the general laboratory tests for insurance purposes yet or something.
If you bought the "BETA" toaster and took it home only to find out it makes burnt toast. Should you take it back to the store? After all it fulfills the main role of a toaster, it just doesn't do it quite to the standard you are used to. It is a "BETA" product after all. The manufacturer promises to replace it at an unspecified future time with a perfectly working toaster with most of the features they had previously determined it would have.
No one in their right mind would go through this with anything they buy on a store shelf. So why do MMO gamers? Because we are willing to. We are crazed, addicted idiots that will throw their hard-earned Game Stop, sales-clerk money at the next barely developed piece of excrement being squeezed out of some backwater developer's hind-cheeks.
What would you do if you preordered a car or truck from a manufacturer and it didn't have all of the features it listed in its advertising? It is a no-brainer -- which is why no one in the real world does this.
The MMO hype machines do this all the time now. Name one MMO in the past ten years that had all of the features they advertised originally.
So here I sit...with a hard drive full of toasters spitting out burnt toast. I have a couple of really great toasters, but I keep buying new ones that don't work.
What is wrong with us?
Comments
Curiosity ?
All those gameplay footages advertising and rave reviews pre-release would make a normal individual be a tiny itsy bit curious wouldnt it? So the thing is; that damn toaster looks kinda different with all those features listed put on the store display, curiosity kills us in the long run as more developer just going to attempt this path yet we'll still cater to them , BUT WE CANT JUST STOP , WE CANT MAN.... scratching bleeding arm*
OP your first question made me laugh hard, cause it's so true

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.
Thankfully , my CC company feels differently and believes if I am not satisfied then I deserve my money back, and their terms trump any TOS.

What problem?
Just play F2P MMOs. You pay nothing for any fun you get out of the game. If you don't get any fun, stop playing.
I don't really care if a MMO has whatever they advertise originally. All i care if the next 10 min of play will be fun. If not, i am out of here.
Good for you. Next time try to be patient and understand what 'beta' really means. You won't need to charge back.
Agreed!
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

i ave 2 answers depending on the group.
1. idiots, no offense but some people really dont think for themselves and instead get swallowed by the hype machine PR groups for games try to build these days.
2. old school beta testers, some of us older players LOVED old style betas we liked going into a game not done fiinding its issue and helping mold the game. for us we need to understand that those days are gone, newer MMOs dont care what beta testers have to say anymore they only really pay attention to thier internal alpha testers and beta is now a tour/ preview of the game not the testing bed it used to be
these days i dont beta test often, i prefer to wait for for a game to be finished i used to luv beta testing but its not the same anymore so i rather wait, heck i gove most MMOs about a month after laucnh before i play them now, the last game i went into beta for, and the only game i have ever payed to enter beta for was Fire Fall and that was the last nail in the coffin for me.
F2P may be the way of the future, but ya know they dont make them like they used to
Proper Grammer & spelling are extra, corrections will be LOL at.
Some of us have moved on from the standard MMO theme park model. I've been on this site for a long time now, and I've watched the change here. For a long time there were a handful of old school MMO gamers who were complaining about the new MMOs because we knew how much more interesting and deep they could be. I remember being in the minority, even on this site, for not liking theme parks.
However, you have to understand that corporations go where the money is. For the last several years, and yes, even still today, the vast majority of MMO gamers are casuals who have *no clue* what MMO games were like 7+ years ago when things like community, social, exploration, non-combat gameplay, open world, etc were normal features. Most of them cut their MMO teeth on WoW or other games that have come post-Wow.
What seems to be happening now though is that for a gradually increasing number of Wow-era MMO gamers, is that they are also becoming tired of the status quo, same-old-same-old theme park games. It was bound to happen eventually due to the fact that these games are largely carbon-copies of each other with a few differences here and there. Players who have grown tired of theme parks are now catching up with us old school MMO gamers who never liked them much in the first place.
The market for gamers who are tired of theme parks will continue to grow. Just like every other aspect of technology, MMO games will have to evolve to keep people interested. There will always be a market for theme parks because there will always be super-casual gamers. However, the market for deeper MMOs such as hybrids and sandboxes will also grow as we have been seeing. Today on MMORPG.com, the majority of the site's users are looking forward to something other than a theme park game. That wasn't the case a couple years ago, but it is now.
Remember that enthusiasts in any market are the trend setters. We are the "extremists", but we are also the ones who push these games forward. The industry as a whole is finally starting to catch on now which is why we are seeing so many different games coming out soon, and so many indy crowd-funded games being attempted.
This Summer is particularly painful because we are all aware of a long list of much more dynamic and interesting games coming down the line, and all we can do is sit and wait. I can't even get myself to play a theme park right now because I am so far beyond that mode of gaming. I just can't do it anymore. So I'll wait and talk with you all here until we start seeing the first wave of different games coming in.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
Rinse and repeat with me: i shall not pay for BETA toasters anymore! if i buy a car.... it has wheels and motor and it takes me to places, isn't it? I would never pay for a CAR that can't steer on to the road... a BETA CAR? Logic is logic, always and in every situation.... oh i shall not pay for BETA toasters anymore!
The OP is so right!
It is a question of fangs.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Yes, that is why MOBAs, instanced based pvp games (WOT, Mechwarrior online), online ARPGs with some MMO features, and other new developments (like Destiny) are going to flourish.
I just hate playing a game and having fun and then reading the forums why I am not really having fun! Then I have to look for another game. This takes such a long time!
Best bet is just to not spend any money on this market at this point, if you are among those who aren't happy with recent trends. It's especially important not to throw money at a beta product/preorders, unless you are absolutely certain it's the kind of game you want to support, and that it's actually lived up to it's supposed features.
As far as why I put up with what I largely consider bad games, it's because they are almost all free, and I never bother checking out cash shop products. It's hard to get motivated to complain when the game doesn't cost you a penny in the first place, much like crappy flash games that are out there on the web.
Human consciousness?
I know it's not a popular idea yet I think our societal institutions suck. Our systems in which we live can be much improved, and the way they are right now affects how people grow up and experience the world, and in turn how they interact with other-selves. (Granted, it used to be worse - and things are changing for the better)
I'm actually really content at the selection of games that I have right now. And I've never played an mmorpg that I didn't enjoy.
So yes, the issue is the consciousness of the player. And that is affected by the world in which we're brought up in.
Honestly, +1 to the devs of our games.
The only thing I don't like is the payment models, yet I do have a choice to play or not.
