Defiance: Free Weekend Incoming

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Have yet to try out Trion Worlds' Defiance? If not, this weekend is your chance as the game will be free to download and play via Steam. The weekend runs from May 23-26 and then follow up on May 27 by watching all six of the TV show's first episodes back to back on Syfy.

Gamers who have yet to explore the open world shooter can try it on PC for free on Steam from May 23rd at 10:00am PDT to May 26th at 1:00pm PDT. Steam is also offering a weekend long sale on Defiance for those whose thirst for alien technology and open world action isn’t satisfied by the trial. Both the Standard Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition will be 30% off.  In addition, Steam will also be running a sale on “Bits,” the in-game currency for Defiance, during which customers will get more “Bits” for their money.

Check out the Defiance site.

Has anyone told Steam about this free weekend?  The sale is there but nowhere on the site does it say "free weekend" starting today?

Sounds like a smart business move to me, this just gives potential purchasers a chance to try the game. The worst that can happen is that someone who was never going to purchase the game to begin with doesn't.

Great opportunity for anyone to kick the tires. The show/game experience is unique and entertaining, not to mention the game is just fun! Smart move on Trion's part.

Too early ahahaha I think the population is very poor. Maybe 1 month and they will thinking about the f2p system :) Thats big fail, so gonna be p2win system.

I like trion but this game is fail for me.

Yeah, steam doesn't seem to be aware of this.  It is past the time for it to have started and nowhere on the game page does it indicate it is free for the weekend.

Why is it that some games don't offer trials from the start? Is it so people buy the game so they get the money, and if they don't like it, well tough luck?

Makes sense.  PC population is most likely the weakest of the 3 platforms.  Hope this brings in some players.  Game has issues but is still just fun.

All game have open beta dude so I think thats why dont need free trial at the headstart. But after one month many people dont pay for the 2nd month so that time nice to make free weekends I think.

usually steams free weekend offers start on fridays. So i guess someone got the dates mixed and that it run fri-sun as usual.

Still i see no need to complain... Free is always good.

This have been a good conversation

I still play Rift and am really glad that Trion confirmed they use separate teams between Rift and Defiance.

I say that because I have lost all faith in the Defiance team now that their GMs are actively deleting tech support threads en masse regardless of their format.

Not only that, but I have found several bugs listed in their FAQ database as solved when they are in fact not. Those issues are completely unprofessional of that staff.

I always get a kick out of people that are "Uh oh, they are already doing free weekends!?  DOOOM AND GLOOOM!!!"

Giving people on the fence a free taste while offering a discount as an incentive to purchase the full product is just good marketing.

Also, I don't think they will be offering this game as F2P any time soon.  It is already B2P and the cash shop is completely optional, so a full on F2P offering would require a change to the reward schema and/or cash shop offerings.

You know a game is in trouble when this happens already... not to mention I hear the TV show isn't doing any better.

Glad I dodged this bullet... I was close to buying it for launch.

Thanks Trion for having no meaningful PvP in your SHOOTER game... if you would have had some I may have made a mistake is buying into the game.

No, the worst ( well, for Trion anyway ) that can happen is someone that wanted to play the game will now see it's not worth it.

Fortunately for Trion, it will take at least 3 days (or however long it takes to complete the maintain storyline and side quests) for the players to realise it is not worth it.

Actually, that's pretty well played by Trion, lol.

Meh... there were a LOT of beta keys... I think the majority of people that would have / wanted to try Defiance had a chance previously. I might eventually buy the game on the Steam Summer sale if it is in the $20 range, but as an "MMO" it is rather weak.

This is just sad. Especially since the majority of reviews all stated how much "fun" it was to start and how quickly it tapered off. Tossing out a free weekend just to snag a bunch of buys smells of money grab when you have no long term prospects. What happened to Trion being the "good" company?

The tv show is doing fine, they just picked it up for a second season, so not sure who is telling you that it's not doing well.

This game is buy to play so there's no second month to pay for.  I'm happy I got my moneys worth, it was fun while it lasted but I'm pretty well done with it now.

Doesn't mean it's good. Have you seen it?  Everyone is running around in terrible wigs and bad makeup.  And Dexter's annoying wife is the mayor.

Umm the ratings have gone way down and the reason it got renewed for second season is because sy fy has pumped a lot of its own money in the show. It is the most expensive show for the channel so far and they are giving it a chance to pick up. But from the average ratings it got so far i doubt it will get a third season.
