SWG 3 months in

http://www.gamespy.com/articles/october03/galaxies2/

Game spy had a very complementary article about SWG on it's release, I assumed they never say anything bad about any game in fear that game maker might start refusing calls and gamespy would lose precious business.

Well, that's not the case... it seems SWG is still broke and they are willing to admit it.

"In the end, while not much has changed with the game, I've changed quite a bit. I've come to realize that the only thing that kept me coming back was the enjoyment I felt at being in the Star Wars universe. If you called this game SpaceQuest Online, what you'd have is a broken MMO with a lot of potential -- potential I'm no longer willing to pay $14.95 a month for. "

I agree with you totally.  Didn't last through the free month before I was back at DAoC:(.

Thank god they finally woke up. Encouraging people to waste their money like that.

I'm not a Star Wars Fan, (just an MMORPG fan) and I saw that the game sucked in 5 - 6 weeks. Read his article and count how many times he admits to being bored. That's exactly what i was BORED!

They gave UO:third dawn 60 percent rating back in 2001.So they have blasted a few games in the past too.

Mind you they gave shadowbane 80 percent,so not too sure about their reviews LOL at least for me.

Har de har har, i've felt smug ever since I read this little gem of an article because its practically confirmed every bad thing I had to say about the game from the start.

Not like a bad review will do anything though, there are enough rabid fan boys to keep the game going for a long time yet.

The sad thing is just that it failed

It so much potential could have knocked every other MMORPG out of the water with the sheer funding behind it

But in essence if a MMORPG fails to impress in the first month its doomed to fail really because people will just not be interested in coming back

A will lay SWG down to one big shame

Come on nearly every other MMORPG also started off on rocky ground and they're still trundling along.  Look at Anarchy Online thats a real dog of a game, if it was a woman i'd shoot it out of pity, and yet even with the new hysterically bad plot twist people still play it and love it.

SWG's always had two significant problems to deal with from the get go.  First off when you get right down to it, SWG is the same damn MMORPG as every other.  Oh I choose a class, I'll kill this monster shall I?  How many times??  So I've levelled now what?  How many Levels!?  So this is a quest is it?  I'm sure i've done this quest before.  Although I have to give them some Kudos to the fact that non-combat characters are actually worthwhile.

Secondly everyone and their mother was going to want to play as a Jedi or Sith Lord.  At least the majority of players want to.  Setting it during the Empire years when the Jedi are exterminated and officially rare as rocking horse excrement was going to cause problems from the start.  You can't just dangle that in front of people and not give out the goodies.  Say no from the start and people will take it in their stride.  Muck them about and your going to hear noise.

    That argument doesnt really work

    A.  MMORPGs are now longer a pioneer in software gamming so they should not be compared to AO.  There are noo more excuses for stupid things in a MMORPG (some bugs are understandable...but SWG is just plain lame)

    B.  These guys run EQ (while they did not create it they nevertheless maintain it).

The "come on its a mmorpg remember AO?" excuse doesnt work anymore.  Thats sorta like the Wright Brother's plane only flew 23 yards on the first try so I guess the World War I planes should have done the same....no...technology improves from another's mistake.

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

I've read a few articles (reviews) here and there that completly bash SWG.  I myself was very excited about it, then I got into beta.  Myself with every other smart betatester pretty much agreed on one thing, the game was no where near completion and that it should NOT be released until at least 2k4.  Now don't get me wrong, there are those that find themselves having a good time playing SWG, no fault of their own, but they do not yet realize they are paying SOE to beta test SWG to further development.  How pitiful of SOE.  Shameful act indeed.

I await another MMORPG that I can enjoy and waste/whittle away my time in running my guilds or having fun with clanmates.  Hopefully one of the ones coming out soon will help us all endure what a MMORPG all have the potential to be....a great fun playing experience.

I think you've misinterpreted my statement En1Gma.  It wasn't an exscuse for the shoddiness of the game it was merely pointing out that a bad first month is not the death knell for an MMORPG as a previous poster suggested.  Every MMORPG starts off on rocky ground due to any number of problems but they can still soldier on despite these problems.

There is a lot ofthings wrong with SWG and the only reason i play it still is 1)its better then the last 3 or 4 mmorpg to come out in my view .which does not say much really 2)i iverplayed DAoC and EQ to bother to go back to them again.

So in 3 months time where will I be?Horizons most likely.

Will SWG suffer greatly when I am gone?doubt it will.

Did i still go and watch phantom menace despite EVERY review saying it sucked badly?Yes i did.

As far as i am concerned here is what SWG is to me-

1)a plain vanilla MMORPG with loads of bugs but they gotten sorted fast but even with all the bugs it will be plain vanilla

2)A MMORPG that is nowhere close to been in the same league of fun with DAoC or EQ

3)A MMORPG that has a logo to its name thus guaranteed success no matter the reviews.

4)A MMORPG that has the luck of been released after a few mishaps like eve online ,shadowbane,AC2,earth and beyond

factor 3 and 4 is what has made it the most successful game to come out since EQ(as it stands its more popular then DAoC atm).

Majority of the  people have played EQ ,DAoC and UO.

This games are very old and people are tired of them despite them been very good.over 2 years of EQ is certainly more then i can handle.

So when you are in guildchat and someone says oh man i am fed up of this game.He quickly follows it up with but i have overplayed EQ and DAoC and the rest new ones sucked worse.

So basically SWG enjoys from 2 fronts- its a game that has a logo to its name and it has the pleasure of been the one eyed king in the land of the blind.

I think if one just one new mmorpg comes out that can prove to be enjoyable in the near future it will be an instant hit nearing the 500,000 mark.

Many are waiting for such a game to come out .
