No people were already doing that. CS games have been around since before UO. Devs saw that people, significant numbers of people were using the cs and/or using 3rd party sites.
So they made other games that catered to that playstyle and, WE THE GAMERS CHOSE THOSE GAMES. Overwhelmingly we chose those games.
The devs just did what they always to, deliver what their market wants.
The OP is assuming that it's all the same people stating they don't like item malls then saying cosmetic is ok then being positive toward them. The same small bunch still rants about F2P and are still as hostile toward people who think differently as they ever were. It's just that the more tolerant posters now take them with a grain of salt and are more inclined to post their own views whereas that was seen as taboo before.
It's probably more likely that the ones that still rant get thier posts removed.
P2P right now is basically the Blockbuster to F2P's Netflix.
Also out society revolves around convenience, so I really don't see that trend going anywhere, anytime soon. Like, even when people cry about wanting a challenging game, they want that challenge handed to them along with subsequent buttpats and rewards, rather than just challenging themselves. Do you see what I'm saying? Even a chance to work hard for something is required to be convenient to gamers.
How can this be the case? Most F2P games lose their players after a couple of months. This is even effecting P2P MMO's, I am not having a plug at F2P here. So how can most players be paying after a one month point? Is the idea that whales stay in for several months?
I think it is most players who would pay, pay after a month.
If the average stay is 4-5 months, there is still a 2-3 month windows for them to pay. If you get the whales to pay a lot in the time windows, that may be enough.
Plus, not everyone joins the game from the start. There is a rolling windows. You will continues to get new players, and they will pay after a month. Now this will taper off eventually, but the actual "paying period" can be more than how long the average players stay.

This seems to make more sense, as long as the window is 4-5 months. And it makes sense that the paying period would last to end game as that's where F2P games always put most of their bars in place.
If you are running a business and you know most customers are short term though, you are going to target them early. That's why I think NW and Marvel Heroes (?) both opened the cash shop pre-launch. Opening the cash shop prelaunch is a F2P games version of P2P pre-order. Both are unacceptable, you should wait until you know what you are getting before you pay anything in life.

I read somewhere that 4-5 month is the average time of a player's stay on a F2P MMO .. though i cannot find the cite now.
Yes, i am sure that is why MH & NWO and all the other games have founder's pack.
OTOH, wanting to monetize does not mean players will bite. There is no such thing as "unnacceptable" here ... some (and i bet a small number of players) do buy those founder's pack. More power to the companies.
Personally i don't buy anything on pre-order (if anything at all), and i think most players don't fall in that "pre-order" trap.
