That's something that always bothered me about Shadowbane as well.  For some reason PvP focused MMOs feel the need to add a PvE grind.  Never made much sense to me.  We don't play PvP MMOs to grind in PvE.  I think they just get too wrapped up in what an MMO is supposed to be and don't consider that a leveling scheme built off of pure PvP combat would be more enjoyable to their audience.  Oh well, maybe someone will get it right one of these days.

Sadly almost all mmos are like this.

Somehow role-playing got transformed into a neverending chase for level, mostly in gear. Players log into a game thinking what and where they should level. When a player can log into the game thinking "what do I want to do today" and not "What do i want to level today", then you got a fun game. Because of the forced level grind, Darkfall is just another "what do I want to level today" game.

If the grind was faster, Darkfall would become a "what do i want to do today" game. Do I want to do quest to get more roles? Do I want to pvp on equal terms as the other players? Do i want to kill NPCs to get mats i need to make gears, do i want to harvest to make things etc.

I`m in a big clan, and all I hear in chat and mumble is if someone wants to kill artic bears, hill giants, hags or how many hundred NPCs they need to kill to gain pvp levels. How fcuking sad is that in a game that promote itself as a pvp mmo.

Very true. No need whatsoever for this boring PvE grind.

The thing is, if they had done the opposite (all PvP feats, no PvE) it would have been impossible for new/casual/solo players to complete them after a certain while. The no lifers would've got ahead the first weeks, completing all the PvP feats with their gank squads and then they would've been untouchable for the rest of eternity with most people unable to progress through PvP anymore.

When you think about it, having a focus on PvE feats early in the game's life is a smart move, it gives everyone a fighting chance and I'm sure they'll add PvP feats later on... There's already a tab for them.

I think that a lot of players are not saying it should have been one or the other.  It should have both avenues for gaining prowess.

Heck, even make the PvP alternative slower than the PvE prowess gaining method.

They could also make it so that after 3-5 kills of the same person in a certain amount of time that there is a diminishing returns of prowess, or the kills don't count towards prowess gains to combat the afk macroing aspect.

It just seems like they missed a really big opportunity to use the different races, clans, groups, villages, ships, etc. for different feats to gain prowess doing what most people play DF:UW for... the PvP.

I haven't heard a reasonable response from anyone on why they didn't try to figure out a way to make that at least an equal advancement path for those who don't like the PvE grind method of gaining prowess.  Yes, I realize that the PvE grind method involves: killing mobs, crafting, exploring, harvesting/gathering.

Again though, why not put in the extra effort to make a reasonable amount of prowess gained from PvP?  Since that is the main thing that DF:UW has going for it over the competition?

Oh well, perhaps some day.  Trouble is... with the way that Aventurine gets around to stuff like that, it might be a really long wait.  image

I don't know why soo many people are mentioning the grind...

How long does it take you to reach the top lvl in any mmorpg playing casually... about 2-3 months

How long does it take to level out 1 role (example warrior 140 str, 100 dex, 100 wis) it takes about a month or less if you join a nice guild or if you solo and know what your doing...

At the launch of the game i had a 70k prowess char in like a week of hardcore playing (took a vacation... lol I'm a geek).

So actually darkfall UW imo is the least grindy game on the market

The difference is in most MMOs, the path to the end is also gameplay, whereas in DFUW the gameplay is at the end and the path is tedium to try to get there - tedium you are paying monthly for.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

It's only as tedious as you make it.  People are just trying to power level prowess the most efficient way they know.  They are burning themselves out.  Is that a fault of AV or of the player?  Not saying that AV's implementation of the feat system is perfect as it is far from it.

And no, the battles in Darkfall isn`t like doing Alterac valley a thousand times, Darkfall sieges is a sandbox in its own.

The politics you need to consider before you chose to siege. Who is the enemies, what clans will help them, how many players can they field, who will help us,  number of roamer clans...

The gathering of siege equipments, gear, consumables, assembling players, notifying allies, attack plan, placement of siegestone, retreat plan, marking runes....

Getting the army ready, making right partys, how to comunicate with allies, how to get to the siege

All this even before the battles start.

We want the wars you so cleverly label deathmatch, but sadly we have to do the things some of you consider fun.

Kill x rats level 1, kill x rats level 2, kill x rats level 3, kill x rats level 4, kill x rats level 5....gain pvp level

Kill x rats level 6, kill x rats level 7, kill x rats level 8, kill x rats level 9, kill x rats level 10....gain pvp level

    kill x rats level 11................................................

Months later you are pvp ready and people wonder why the game is empty and dead.

If Tasos didn`t lift, he would probably get bitch-slapped. My only joy for AV to totaly destroy a fun game with a pointless level grind, is they will be unemploid in Greece.

Dude I've seiged multiple times in the game, its epic, I even threw a video up a while back of my clan being ambushed it was quite the experience.  But i wont pay 15 dollars a month for a huge fps game essentially.  EVE's large scale battles all have meaning, if they adapted that into DFUW I would pay no doubt but they don't soooo.

I also don't know where you whipped this whole rats thing out from..or what your talking about lol.

Gotta say these reviews get me pretty excited to try out the game. Seems like its a love it or hate it kind of thing but the more I hear of it the more I love it.

If WoW was released today even in its' entirety it would be f2p in 3 months.
Why is it still such a big deal?

It is a love or hate relationship.

If you fall in love you won't be able to go back to other games. Darkfall spoils you.

If you hate, then the hate consumes you. You spend your time on forums telling everyone how Tasos is a terrible lover and is always cheating on you.

    LMAO.

Well put and dead on. Some of the haters really seem like they are consumed by their emotions. It's amazing that people can actually behave that way over a game.

Population: Dropping due to bugs, client crashes, client performance, lack of content, and cheaters.

Content: The main content is killing players or killing 150 of certain monsters for feats. There are a few boss mobs you can kill for rare materials. They added one dungeon where you will be destroyed by the larger clans that camp it 23/7. Sieges are in the game, but client performance and crashing makes it a tedious chore.

PvP/Combat: Ranged and Magic seem to be fun, but melee combat still needs a lot of work. Most melees find themselves running in circles all day against other melees, or getting kited around by elementalists or skirmishers. The game might be better if they made strafing viable while introducing more momentum to sprinting so that its slower to turn. Right now strafing is only used by skirmishers to make their shots more accurate for a moment.

Cheating is also a huge issue in pvp. Some of the teleporters and extreme speed hackers have been banned. The less obvious hacks are still killing the game. The worst ones are no stam hack and sticky back. I have run into both. We have found many players that continue sprinting no matter how many stamina draining abilities you dump on them. They never stop sprinting. The no stam hack is a speed hack that makes you run at sprint speed while running. It would be impossible to do if av would just make the animations look different for sprint and run. Or maybe they could just add a small glow around a players feet while sprinting. The sticky back hack makes melees stick to you like glue. Even doing random turns cant break you away from them. The only way to shake them is to use a movement speed boost, but that's impossible for elementalists.

There's no other game like darkfall on the market, but it has so many fun killing issues that are being resolved at a snail's pace.  It might be worth picking up in a year's time after some of the issues are fixed.

Everybody sprints all the time. I don't know one person who doesn't. Not doing so puts you at a huge disadvantage.

If you are a mage you are supposed to parry up with sword and board when you have melee on you.

It seems like you need PvP help. I would read the forums if I were you. There are helpful posts under Player Roles.

I know how to pvp. I'm saying it's not fun to sprint in circles. I never said that I couldn't do it.

Honestly turtling up as a mage is a bad idea unless you have help. It's more effective to launch a spell with a knockback on it, and squirrel around while spinting. Maybe you would know that if you were better at the game. My complaint is with the 3rd party cheat app assisted unbreakable sticky backs. I only pull out the sword and board when a warrior stampedes.

    Cheating isn't a big issue.

Melee combat has player skill depth, but needs more. If all you are doing is circling around your enemy as a warrior you are doing it wrong

People are still reporting crashes during sieges, but it seems to less frequent now

Population is declining among vets. Newbie population is still rising, albeit slowly.

Siege and player holdings aren't really worth having/fighting over right now though because of safe zones and villages not working as originally advertised (or they are and it just sucks).

The proeblem is launching a spell with knockback on it a close range is that it will hit you as well.

People who are better than both of us agree that every class should parry with sword/board when needed to create space.

Not if you do it right with a jump spin. How are you going to create space with a shield?  A Shield doesnt work when you are being hit in the back. Sword and board is primarily used to buy time for a friend/ally to peel the enemy off of you. Sometimes it's used strategically to drain stam from a dumb player. Otherwise it's useless.

Every good Skirm, Ele or Primalist has used Sword/Board to create space when I am trying to sticky back. Bad ones give me their back and die.

An Ele should be using their knock backs/ups to prevent a Warrior from getting into melee range.

Free trials would do damage to the players who sub.

Reasons why is Spys, Gold farmer spam, Gold farmers being able to sell using trials hiding their ip to do so, Endless gathering Alts being made to gather then hour before trial is up send it all to main account, Free portal Shards (everyone gets 1 free portal shard and x amount of gold after they create could be abused badly with a trial).

Those are just a few reasons off the top of my head but im sure there are way more.

Game sucks. It seems like half of us want our money back and Less than  60% retention rate after the first month.

To be honest, don't buy this game unless you want a very  unpolished turd that lets you do interesting interactive things.

You will craft, clunk through combat, and mostly dream of having fun while being frusterated with the sub-standard gameplay compared to 90% of games out there nowadays.

Pardon my low tolerance for stupidity.

I also wonder how long they plan to stay with their current payment model with how much of an issue it already seems to be for alot of people.

You could also just make people shutup and allow the game to run on peoples computers and give them a feel for it.

    PS

Every post of yours is a post whining about a video game.

You spend too much time complaining about things you don't like, instead of talking about the things you do like.

    EVERY SINGLE POST!

Seeing as I've been an mmorpg.com member for over 10 years........and have what...(this makes 13 posts...?)

I have participated in bitching about this crappy game and bitching about the crap that is wizardry online. The only 2 discussion forums I have participated in.

I think your comment just proves my point ; if someone so relatively silent (around 1 post per year average??) speaks up about something being a piece of shit, then obviously, it's a piece of shit.

But yes. Good attempt at discrediting my words. Though I believe it just proves my point, really. I generally don't sit in forums and go "zomgz I love this game guys! hooray!".  But I am happy to provide the voice of reason against the fanboys that lured people like me (looking for fun pvp) into buying this flaming pile of garbage.

Pardon my low tolerance for stupidity.
