I haven't played SWG since a few months after release. I had a master CH/Pistoleer. I dunno, I think the combat uprade is fun. I just hit lvl 12 Force Sensitive and a Commando to lvl 12. The combat is fast paced and intense. It's a step in the right direction anyways...and I think it feels more KOTOR now than EQ1...which is a good thing.
They just hit us with a 2gig patch yesterday as well to clean up the performace and add some missing animations and graphics. I'm interested to see how it goes over over the next month or so.
The old-school veterans must hate this FPS-esque upgrade, but If you haven't tried SWG before I suggest you give the 10-day trial a go, I'm having a good time with it.

Pre-Cu = a step in the right direction
O RLY? I dare you to find me talking bad about Pre-CU. I've complained about this game ever since they did the original CU. That is what I am talking about.
The game isn't all that bad (if you don't mind a level grind based game with no skill system whatsoever) until CL30
At CL30 the content dries up and there is literally no way to level except to grind. At 1/10th the old XP payout solo, and grouped it's worse since what little xp you still get for killing npc's is now divided equally among the group (not shared.... DIVIDED). Ignore anyone who tries to tell you that the old quests still work. Yes, they do, but they do not give XP rewards so there is no way to ADVANCE other than to grind.
Equal cons (and even slightly higher cons) are only worth, at most, 500xp... (at CL40)
It will take people, literally, over a year to get to CL70 (where they can just begin to start scratching the surface of mustafar content). SOE's answer: It's being investigated.
Like I said... as long as you don't mind that they removed (or merged) 23 professions from the game and reduced it to 9 and as long as you don't mind that they removed any semblance of a skill based system from the game and you don't mind that almost all aspects of the game that encouraged good roleplay have been removed then the game will be fun. Combat, as I said in my own review, is a lot more fun now and a lot more 'star wars'. The NEW quests (and the mustafar quests) are pretty good too. The problems start become glaringly painful when:
1) You try to PVP... Melee get flat out owned
2) You get to CL30 or, worse, are a pre-existing CL30-70 player
Everyone who has posted that they 'like' the changes has fallen into this 1 single category:
They are starting a new character from scratch at level 1. None have experienced the CL30-70 game. I have. It sucks.
*I* even somewhat liked the pre-CL 30 game.

But heres the thing, EQ2 = MMORPG, KOTOR = offline, single player RPG
so if SWG = MMORPG then surely SWG should be more like EQ2 than KOTOR???!!!!!!
Why don't people understand that if we wanted to play KOTOR we would already be playing it!!!!!!! There is a stronger argument against making it a clone of another Star Wars game than there is for making it a clone of another MMORPG (which it wasn't to start with but has now unfortunately gone in that direction)
PRE CU was the best because it qas unique!
All it needed was to be tweaked. Less effort than the Cu and the NGE needed :

Shame the NGE combat isnt even fun : if it was like SW BF2 then yeh it wud be fun, but its not.

When I say it's more like KOTOR I'm talking about how combat plays. In all other respects it's still an MMO. KOTOR is a short game to say the least, the new SWG is like KOTOR x100. I already played KOTOR and loved it, but you can only play a single player game for so long.
To Scaramoosh...SWG was unique pre CU? Are you insane?...lol oh wait, I already know that answer. Pre-CU SWG was EQ1 wrapped with a big Star Wars bow on the top. NGE isn't fun? Ya, you are right, pressing 1 key and watching the fight blows the new combat away. Please...
Again, I feel bad for the SWG vets, but something needed to be done with this steaming pile of turd...and they are finally going in the right direction IMO.

I too have to agree that they are moving to the right direction. The pre-CU was only good for those who have played the "alpha" classes. And the fact that everyone and their mothers wore the very same armor, didn't make the game very attractive either. I was one of those who liked to wear Mabari armor and it was really rare back then. Someone even came up to me and asked where I got the armor from because he didn't know it even existed.
Well combat is still not in balance because yes, close combat is still a pain in the butt and leveling is a pain after 30. Still, I am almost certain that they will straighten these things out soon. Most, including me think that it's SOE's last chance to satisfy their customers. Now that everyone can be a jedi, they will have to keep the endgame content interesting also.

You know.. it didn't take throwing out a perfectly good system to get people to diversify their armor wardrobe.
And pre-cu there were few alpha classes. Post CU there was one BIG one.. but pre-cu had many classes that were very good.

but the alpha classes are still here , the NGE did not fix it.
medic is god like on par with a def stacker with a pocket doc and a gtef'd MCM that just walked by all tossed into one neat package.
i still find it strange that the only things they are patching are xp expliots , not one game ending bug dead end quest or weapon that a commandos canteven use ( oh yeah an entire class of the 9 doesnt work right now at all no ETA on the fix either)
Yet people still sit here and think they are fixing it ... its been almost a month and NOTHING has been fixed nothing, you can lie about it all you want and quote a patch note , the reality is they lie to you on every patch note and for some reason a few buy it. I dont get it.

I dont remember having to hold the mouse button down for my "autoattacks" in KOTOR and definatly dont remember clicking 1 through = and clicking the right mouse button to do a special. The Pre-cu was definatly more like KOTOR because it had autoattack (like KOTOR) it had your one button push specials (like KOTOR) it had jedi that were powerful (like KOTOR). Hell, KOTOR is like EQ1 except in a smaller universe and minus a few things, so where are you getting your facts?

kotor used a combat quene (ala pre CU) eq doesnt ala NGE -
kotor the quest drove the story not your leveling you had to kil stuff this might apply to the NGE in 6 months but as of now it doesnt, its kill stuff because the quests dont exist ( devs admit this).
Kotor you had more leeway to develop your character sans pre NGE , now you dont ,you're trapped into a mask of exactly the same as everyone else of same class ala eq a mage is a mage is a mage.

kotor its easy to find a group , you are given one . EQ you shout out LFG for 20 -30 mins sound familiar ( anyone remember LF sqill group forming at bridge!)
kotor no crafting , no entertaining. eq has usless crafters and bards were useful. hmm again a NGE trait.
kotor 1 player game . eq multiplayer ( this list can go forever) tho with NGE since its really hard to find players your level doing what you need to do it might as well be a 1 player game.
kotor the expansion was a free download for xbox live users or a free disc at ebgames etc...( the space station ) eq you pay for expansions - have you ever gotten a expansio for free on release fomr SOE?
kotor had a target lock and a pause. EQ had a target lock no pause . NGE you have to cheat to get a target lock and no pause.

kotor you could customise a weapon / armor to be better - eq you couldnt , NGE you cant drops rule crafted is always sub par.
kotor had characters so entertaining they made it to other games ( NGE we get hk unit) thats more like kotor.

If they REALLY made it like KOTOR or KOTORII I wouldn't be complaining.
Both have target lock - SWG doesn't, makes it very unfair for those who aren't good at FPS combat. (Not a problem for me, I have been playing PlanetSide and other FPS games since as far back as DOOM on the PC and further back than that on C-64, Amiga and other platforms
Both have deep skill systems that allow you to customize your character - SWG does not.
Both allow you to branch out later in the game and take on new professions that grow based on the old. - SWG does not.
Both are well balanced for melee vs. ranged combat. - SWG is not
Both have deep and engrossing storylines and missions and quests that take you through the ENTIRE GAME, not just the first 30% and final 10% with no way to get to the final 10%. - SWG only has 40% of the game completed. Odd how 2.5 years after release... 5 years after development... the game suddenly went from 90% complete down to 40%.
Mind you: I LIKE the combat system. But I'm an FPS player. I enjoy them. MOST people who play MMORPG's do NOT like FPS combat. If they liked FPS combat then PlanetSide would have MANY more players than it does. WWII Online would have MANY more players than it does. MMORPG players, for the large part, don't want to play an FPS game based upon sheer subscriber numbers in MMORPGs that use FPS verses MMORPGs that use a more RPG style combat.

I agree with Elnator, it's not KOTOR-like. It would be KOTOR-like if it was an RPG-style gameplay with fast combat and actual storyline-driven content.
