There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Not much is known. Many statements have been made, but even when those statements are a direct response to a question, they are vague and don't actually answer the question.
For instance, in answering the question of, "Will there be FFA PvP?", they said, "We try to avoid bad design decisions." Which leads a lot of people to believe there won't be any FFA PvP, but it just means that they avoid decisions that they think are bad. Who the f*cking h3ll purposely makes decisions they think are bad?
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Not much is known about it, but I think the hype is more that people are just excited about the possibility of a new EverQuest. The implementation of StoryBricks and some of the comments about how the market situation is makes them sound like they've learned from some of their mistakes and learned what they do well and what their players want.
HOW they implement them could be an entirely different story, but so far much of what's been said has been encouraging at least.
Played: EQ1 (10 Years), Guild Wars, Rift, TERA Tried: EQ2, Vanguard, Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Runes of Magic and countless others... Currently Playing: GW2
The hype is a result of SOEs brilliant marketing strategy.
Instead of giving details out at E3 (which would be dissected and scrutinized to hell
and back), SoE privately showed the game to some press and had them sign agreements to stay quiet.
The press loved what they saw but couldn't reveal any detail - this created a huge hype train free marketing for SoE and EQN.
Perfectly executed.
There is no better way to hype people up than let their own imagination go crazy, if they gave us details the speculation wouldn't exist.
So the secret sauce is to not give out any solid details that could be scrutinized, I know it happens eventually but better have a hype train drive the masses crazy first.
you forgot that they also set Smedley loose with vague no-answer answers.
i admit to enjoying the excitement and anticipation of something new and interesting, perhaps even something i know only a little about.
however, i am astonished at the hype, claims, counter claims, and proposals that this site has been filled with over the past month or so. its bordering on the ridiculous.
when the final game comes out, wonderous though it may be, i doubt it will provide few if any of all the ticky-tacky everyone is attaching to it.
if some of the earlier posters are correct about SOE creating this overblown response, then SOE has finally gotten a marketing department worth its salt, or is about to create the greatest debacle in mmo's to date.

I can picture them sitting back and watching this, and saying "Did we do that?".
Of course SoE loves the excitement. This game will be F2P, which means that if the game blows, people won't spend a dime on it, so hype will get people to try it, but it won't get them to spend any money unless it's good (besides pre-order options that gives items, if people do that).

Pretty much this. Before the Tentonhammer and MMORPG.com best of E3 awards it was given EQNext hardly had any activity going. Now when I come to the site the homepage almost always has 2 or 3 of the most recent comments EQNext related.

I agree with DMKano, but I do also believe that the benefit could greatly outweigh the annoying-ness of the wait. If this game aspires to be a massive sandbox, a community will be required at launch. If SoE executes their aforementioned 'brilliant' marketing to acquire that audience early on, i'm all for it.

Don't blame us, it's SoE's fault and I'm not sure what else there is to do until 8/02.
Is it a rhetorical question ?
No. If it were a rhetorical question, I likely would have answered it. Because I answer rhetorical questions.

Guys, you do not get it...
Everquest Next was already released.
It IS a blank slate.
We just have to create it ourselves here on the forums.
Think of it as a sandbox MUD!
SO revolutionary and innovative!
Hype OP
Needs NERF!
- SneakyTurtle
Not completely blank slate.
We have the quality of previous EQ titles, as well as the quality of Planetside 2's engine to hype us up.
