How can you hate a game that literally has no info released yet?

MargulisMargulis Member CommonPosts: 1,614

I've seen a LOT of extremely negative, hateful, angry, cynical, resentful, doomsaying posts about EQNext already and it literally has no solid information yet at all.  Nothing.  Seriously??  For all you know this could be one of the most enjoyable games you've ever played.  And sure, maybe it wouldn't be, but why already go to that point of discounting and eliminating it as an option to you without knowing ANYTHING about it?  I can understand being ambivalent or on-the-fence waiting for actual info before being excited, but already hating on the game that no one knows anything about is just as ridiculous as people 100% positive this will be their savior MMO.  Actually, it's worse, because the only feedback that has come out so far about the game has been EXTREMELY positive.  And while people can argue the legitimacy of getting best of show from 2 big mmo websites at E3, which I agree with, the bottom line is still that the feedback was extremely positive, NOT negative.  But still, people swinging completely in the opposite direction with the hating, doomsaying, wanting it to fail, etc etc.

What is wrong with you people?  Is it just a joy at watching other things fail - in other words being pretty miserable, angry and resentful inside?  Have you been burned too many times getting excited for a new game only to be disappointed so now you don't even allow yourself to feel anything but skepticism at any new game release?  Or is it maybe contempt or resentment at SOE or Smedley for things done in the past?  Maybe the company has done some things you don't agree with or that affected you personally in a negative way and you want to see the company suffer?  80% or more of the reasons why I see people saying this game will be horrible or will fail is because of some thing that happened in the past with another game of SOE.  This isn't the past people and it isn't one of those other games!!  Have you never made a mistake or done something that others don't agree with, then in the future do a better job and improve?  Are we, and SOE, locked into doing the exact same things over and over again?  Any mistake we make, doomed to repeat it?  Of course not!!  I HATED  few things SOE has done but so what, why can't I give them a chance with this?  I want people to give me a chance when I screw something up to do better next time.  Why even go to that area of hate already?  THERE IS NO INFO YET - GIVE THE GAME A CHANCE TO SUCK BEFORE DECIDING IT SUCKS AND GIVE SOE A CHANCE TO SCREW IT UP BEFORE DECIDING IT'S ALREADY SCREWED UP!!  Jeez

And hell no I don't think people need to be a fanboi or even be excited for the game yet.  But hating it and wanting it to fail already really does nothing but hurt you.  People excited will remain excited, people waiting for more info will continue to wait for more info before deciding, but you will have already eliminated a game that could be fun as hell for you based solely on your own resentments, anger, or whatever it is that results in the despising of something that literally is completely amorphous as of this point in time.

you cannothate it, nor can you like it. Not until August 2nd when they tell you what it is - beyond Everquest.

    Currently bored with MMO's.

Obviously people can love or hate it without knowing what it is.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Most of the hate is for what they perceive SOE has done in the past. Me I will wait and see, I have hopes that it will bring back some of the nostalgia of EQ1.

I'll admit - I'm a blind believer in ANET and Jeff Strain (no longer w ANET)

SOE is a mixed bag for me

back in 2005, Smed tried RMAH before Blizzard's attempt w D3 -- it included selling characters too

    http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1716/soes_station_exchange__the_.php

Smed caught alot of flack for it from players

altho now its more acceptable  (as seen by Blizzard fans defending RMAH)

Smed has made other blunders (notably EQ1 GoD expansion and SWG NGE)

but overall I enjoy SOE games - and look forward to trying them

No, it is called SWG pre NGE fans who carry a torch against anything SOE related. But be a good chap and put your tin foil hat  back on.

The typical "elitist-sandbox-player-who-thinks-anyone-who-hates-a-sandbox-game-sucks" mentality. Funny really to either love or hate on a game we know so little about.

This is MMORPG.com where dreams come true and anything can happen.  This site is a real think-tank full of logic and reason.

It's not the game, it's the countless posts filled with nonsense about a game we know basically nothing about.

    Oh it's a "sandbox!"

By who's definition?  No one can even agree what a real sandbox is, let alone agree about an MMO with no info.

  • InFlamestwoInFlamestwo Member Posts: 662
It's because it's SoE. What they did to SWG and Vanguard.

also there is the "is Smedley telling us anything or just saying anything he thinks will continue the hype" factor.

I can't hate Everquest. EQN may not be very good considering it will be f2p most likely but I'll still play it. That said I hope EQN will be The MMO and somehow I trust it will be image

    What we know:

    1)  A glipse of decent graphics (just a shot or two)

    2)  Uses their new graphics engine which is fine in Planetside 2

    3)  Claims to be a sandbox, which is a huge boon to those who are tired of being directed from quest hub to quest hub

    4)  Norrath.  (Many folks love Norrath like Tolkien fans love Middle Earth)

    5)  Presumably Triple AAA funding from a game development powerhouse (Sony)

    6)  FTP (some like this, some do not, but will invariably lead to stronger populations on servers, which is almost always a good thing)

    7)  Ten Ton Hammer and (this site? or other gaming site) got a glimpse of the game at E3 and immediately awarded it best in show.  Claims that the game is incredible.

    8)  Some talk of the "You're in Our World Now" theme coming back.  Basically, you play a character in the world, but are in no way some bada&& who pwns or the "Chosen One".  I personally, have always liked just playing an ordinary character who has the potential and opportunity to work up to something better; never liked my characters being born "special" (aka. Rift).

While nothing is conclusive, this is enough to get me going.  I've been dying for an "true" EQ reboot since the early 2000's.

if the payment model in the game is a hybrid system, F2P with the option to access the whole game via P2P, then i would be all over that, i am not really a fan of cash shops at all, but these days they seem to be a necessary evil, one thing that does encourage me in that regard is that Planetside 2 is a hybrid F2P/P2P game, so EQN likely will be too. And if they truly can capture the EQ1 spirit again, then i doubt i could be happier, EQ1 was my first MMO addiction, and for several years. I just hope that EQ1 is the driving influence on EQN though, and not EQ2.. image

Because it was the winner of 2013 E3 Best of Show and people love to hate on winners. (Or bandwagon them too)

There really isn't any reason to have any strong feelings about this game since almost nothing is really known about it.  Some people with love it anyway because it has Everquest in the title and others will hate it anyway because it is made by Sony/Smedly.  So I guess the goofiness balances out.

I don't hate EQNext, but it would have to have a completely different mind-set from the original for me to even consider it. EQ was lots and lots of fun, but it also had some really horrible developer decisions. Like a developer making a maxed out Ranger (that are not allowed to wear plate armor) and then strutting around in plate armor for all the "lesser folk" to see. Even joining in raids (but only with the privileged few). Or the 20 minute boat rides to Freeport. Or the fact that an equal level goblin 1vs1 was suicide (at least for a Cleric), and that one still pisses me off the most. Then the death penalty that could actually make you lose a level. They just took time sinks to a whole new level of torture for their customers.

I still play eq2, it is my game.  I would have still been playing SWG if it were not for the nge followed by Lucas Arts screwing all of us.

I will say this a lot of folks will hate EQNEXT just because Smedly is involved.  I got to admit, I went toe to toe with Smedly at the 2006 SWG summit in Atlanta.  I was the guy who told him that I was no longer the demographic he was looking for, and he told me I was wrong, and that kicked off a heated argument between me him and several other players.

I don't like Smedly ,  I think that hes made a lot of bad decisions.  However I will not discount EQNEXT just because of Smedly.

However I can understand why folks have such hate for Smedly.

I haven't seen a lot of hate on these forums for EQN only  negative response to the positive hype based on air  and wishful thinking and people with agendas trying to shape what little information there is into what they want to see.

I think most of us are wait and see.

And how can you defend it?

'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

I feel it is really stupid to" hate" a game. "hate" is a pretty strong word, better left to more serious things in life

Some of us actually enjoy non linear themeparks. Just sayin'.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

Also Hypocrisy runs rather rampant on this site too.

How many say one thing and do another?  Like talk about how linear themeparks are the devil and turn around and defend a game like FFXIV.  I've seen a few do that, much to my chagrin and amazement.
