e-mail from Smedley about PvP Server.

DauzqulDauzqul Member RarePosts: 1,982

I can't remember if I posted this, as the e-mail is a few months old.

I've been e-mailing with Smedley for a long time now. He will sometimes surprise me with a response. Anyways, I fired over a rant-ish e-mail about the typical modern PvP Server and how they are never anything more than redundant Battleground instances etc.

dauzqul <********@gmail.com>

Every game has the same old instanced PvP.

My entire guild literally quit SWTOR after the 2nd week due to all of the redundant Warzones and Battlegrounds. We're done chasing the carrot on the stick via pvp item rewards. It's not fun anymore. Been there and done that in every game post-WoW.

World PvP with meaning is the only way (on PvP Servers).

Smedley, John <**********@soe.sony.com>

 you'll be a happy man.

This is the same Smedley who said EQ wouldn't go F2P and who said they would never sell power in a cash shop.

Take whatever he says, with about 10 trucks of salt.

Smed's quotes are hilarious.   I mean I want this game to be great as much as the next person, but his one liners that don't reveal anything are great.

Smed working in produce at the grocery store:

    Customer:  "Is this lettuce fresh?"

Smed:  "Prepare to be blown away"

Smed working as a clerk at Auto servicing

Customer:  "So I get lifetime tire rotations now?"

    Smed:  "You won't be disappointed."

Smed working as a 911 dispatcher

Caller:  "My friend is going into convulsions please send help."

    Smed:  "BIGGEST SANDBOX EVER!"

Smedley would make a great car salesman. He could sell you a broken down car you had to push home, and he would make you believe you got the best deal ever.

    haha, this made me laugh

I just think Smed is so excited about this , every time he is asked about it he pisses his pants and forgets who he is for a few minutes.

Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

Guy complains about not enjoying instanced BG style pvp.

He says that EQN is going to have something he'll enjoy.

Doesn't take a genius to figure out what  that means.

Legends of Kesmai, UO, EQ, AO, DAoC, AC, SB, RO, SWG, EVE, EQ2, CoH, GW, VG:SOH, WAR, Aion, DF, CO, MO, DN, Tera, SWTOR, RO2, DP, GW2, PS2, BnS, NW, FF:XIV, ESO, EQ:NL

IMO anyone thinking that EQN wont have different server rules is just wishful thinking.

They have to deliver the good with this game. The short, vague, untelling answers for months (years) even, won't fly with fans next time. Way too annoying. We will just /ignore and leave their hype train empty.

    rofl good stuff.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

I think the main issue is that SOE thought EQN would be out by now, but because they went back and changed design elements it delayed the launch quite a bit.

I don't see why you have a need to post negative comments on every thread for a game you know you're going to play endlessly lol.

It's going to be the only AAA Sandbox in town, and it's going to be a great PVE experience, and a great PVP experience (For those who want it).

All with great visuals on an engine that runs great.

    Shhhhhh.

Just hand over your wallet and stop being a negative Nancy.

Also, the reason they're not saying much is for the reason I already stated many times now.  It's protecting their ideas so the competition has less time to work putting them into their games.

DayZ became a huge hit, started working on a stand alone, and it's not even out yet and a few other games copied it almost exactly to the letter (Though poorly).  It's just the nature of video games.  When you got something good, people are going to adapt that into their games.

That probably wasn't from John Smedley as his regular email doesn't end with @soe.sony.com.

OP, if you've not made this up yourself, then someone is messing about with you.

Yes, it would make more sense to give away more information when it's supposed to be saved for August. I'm not sure what Smed's supposed to say. At least he's responding.

How much does SOE pay you?  Have you seen and played this game yet?

That's the same e-mail address that was used when "he" (or whoever?) replied to me about a Vanguard question.

It is possible that he uses more than one address. When I worked at Harvard for a bit one of the business professors had several e-mails he used.

With all the games that have come out over the years, we have been generally getting only minor improvements on what basically EQ started back in 1999.  Once in a while we get a game that breaks away from some of the traditional mechanics (GW2 dynamic events / non-gear treadmill end game, Tera's action combat, SWTOR's story telling, etc), but overall the main experience of these games have been themepark themepark themepark.

And hey, some of the themeparks have actually been entertaining.  More entertaining than many single player games.  Not ragging on them completely, but I want to try out something fresh and new.

Then you say EQ + sandbox?  How can I not be excited?

Then you see journalists comments that have seen it saying ("Game changer", "You won't wanna miss this", and "It exceeded our expectations"

Ya.  It's going to be a legendary game.  No doubt about it.

i have no doubt of its future legendary status. i am waiting to see, however, what exactly it will be legendary for.

So - you've been let down because you've made your OWN expectation of what an MMORPG should be based around... something imaginary.

Now you come back to bash anyone and everyone that is happy about a future title - because you wanted to escape reality. And now your marijuana isn't effecting you the same way it use to when you were 16 and your video games aren't taking you to the same fantasy land they did when you were young.

You're adults now. Reality is reality. You can't escape it unless you kill yourself and there is still a mystery as to what happens then with reality.

Everquest was a game-changer. It laid the foundation for every succesful themepark MMO since 99'. It's still alive and expansions are being released.

EQ2 was also a solid game. And it's still going. Expansions still being released.

Planetside was revolutionary in terms of FPS/MMO hybrid at release.

DCUO is the best BY FAR of the superhero MMOs.

Vanguard went to hell and sony picked up the pieces, JUST FOR THE NICHE, and made it whole and a great game. They knew it wasn't going to land billions of buyers. They did it for the niche fans.

SWG - need i say more? there is a huge dispute between whether soe was the one who messed it up - but they also made the game you all came to love as the best sandbox ever.

So with all that being said - how on earth is SoE going to fail EQNEXT?

They've never failed at launch. Every game they have is succesful and still going strong (as far as AAA titles).

It may not be a new species. But it's going to be succesful.

It's funny how butthurt you all are because you can't see what's behind the curtain. It's called patience. It's less than a month I think now?

Smedley's just playing with your emotions. hahah.

This, and the OP is easily towed in by Smeds, when his words lost value many years ago to many.

Hope he (and you) are right, I just wait and see if he delivers the Holy Grail to MMOs.
