Bad things first: Get rid of those character models!

Don't get me wrong SOE has shown us some really exiting things about EQN. But the as the character models appeared for the firs time, that really was a WTF-moment for me. That human character looks exactly like a Disney princess out of a Pixar movie and that Kerra, I don't know how to describe it, its just stupid and ugly. What is this? Tony the Tiger in epic WoW gear. Those Panda-things from WoW are stupid, but I'm sure Blizzard would have rejected this.

The Environment looks so good, but the character models just look out of place, like they don't belong in this world. I have nothing against Rapunzel from Tangled but I don't think this is what the Everquests fanbase or any mmorpg player wanted. I just can't identify with that kind of character.

I don't know how much work on the models has already been done. But I think there is still time to change them. At least give them less goofy faces, I would be pleased with that.

Smedly said something like that he wants to develop the game together with the players. On his "Round Table", he asks us if female dwarfs should have beards or not. The first thing I would do is to flip his round table and tell him: "Listen Smed,  you can put beards on things as much as you like, but those big goggle eyes have to go!!!

That is why I prefer eastern MMO art style, it's better than the Disney pattern of western MMOs.

They showed a Human Female and a Male Kerra, 2 of the easiest races to cause this amount of confusion.  lets wait to see how the Ogres and Dark Elves look before we label it anything.

Random Forum Poster: I want an MMO that is different, original and fun.

Me: So you want something like EQN

Them: Nah dude, I want a Holy Trinity, Tab Target combat, Instanced Raiding, and Rigid classes.

    Me: Double Facepalm.

I am appalled at the art direction in EQN - yes art direction not graphics.

Heck even the audience was very reluctant to clap when they said this is what Firiona looks like in game - awkward.

i am still in disbelief that lion king, and the atrocious bulky armor look is actually the art direction???????

Makes two of us.  I thought I was looking at WoW2 not EQN.

You're right I would even prefer the character models from Tera, and that game has preteen Playboy bunnies.

The kerran model is amazing, the human female model is amazing, peace out !

Get used to these character models, these are not things they change this late in development.  It's all drawn up already, they've fit those bulky armor on the characters already.  It's clear SOE is going after a specific mass market audience.  Yes it's a sticker shock to Everquest franchise fans, but it is what it is.

Kind of knew what it was going to be like since I played Planetside 2, and Planetside 2 used the same forgelight engine that EQ Next uses.  In Planetside 2, the environment and landscape look absolutely beautiful, they actually look a lot like the clips shown today for EQ Next.  Almost identical.  And particle effects and lighting will be amazing as well.  Unfortunately for character models, it is going to be more cartoony.  And character armor will have less detail.  In Planetside 2 you could barely make out the decals that you buy to put on your armor.

I think it looks really good and will help the game run on a lot of machines. If you want to play a hyper realistic game just go outside and LARP or something.

The kerran shoulderpads were slightly overscaled in my opinion, but thats about it, based on concept art etc the other races look awesome.

Smedly the incredible fat ogre said,  (duh) people don't play our game cause they don't look like WOW (duh).   Let's (duh) make EQN character models look exacly like that.  I'm gonna be rich!

Agree with the OP completely. The characters are just awful.

The character models allow all those emotions though :p    Perhaps that is one good reason why more realistic face models were not planned for eqnext.

  • TamanousTamanous Member RarePosts: 3,030

They look fine. Realism is boring. Every single mmo I have played that attempted realism typically ended up overly stiff or all characters ended up looking the same or a combination of both. If SOE tried realism along with the many social emotes and facial expressions planned they would have been battling the uncanny valley and failed hard.

If EQNext was more realistic we would see the exact same number of hate threads saying the world is stiff and without soul. MMORPG community is so full of jaded players that you only hear the haters who tend to be the most vocal. It is a nice though knowing that for every spastic, reactionary poster there are several normal people with more balanced opinions who never bother to post. I know so because if you never visit forums and only talk to people IN GAMES you see how amazing and friendly most players are.

If I have one tip for readers here is that they should simply be aware of this.

    You stay sassy!

That is a point, just wish it was a little less juvenile

I don't see a problem. They look way better than the models from EQ1 and 2. They are animated way better also. Do you really want those stiff models and animations back for EQN? Besides they only showed 2 races. Chill and wait till they show the rest before flipping out.

While I feel it could have gone a little more dark and dynamic, I enjoy this new style of modelling trend (the torchlight games, Wildstar...) and am really looking forward to some awesome looking gear/weapons/effects/tweaks/skins/color/style in the character creation and world! Really REALLY expecting housing and everything to be spectacular with the idea of the server world itself changing all around me as it goes on... If I ever get bored(looks like a BIG if!) rolling alt's and whatnot, I can quit for a while and hopefully come back to some exciting new changes to the world I previously knew. I love the fact that regardless of gripes about the graphics (which I find really pleasing) there seems to be the fantastic sense of immersion and childlike wonder I feel when  think about the possibilities of endless story and life I can find with any of the character I will make, the towns and events I will help forge, to be part of a really not so real world again... just like back in 99' :{P

animations are great, character models are cartoon horrible! Please change it I don't want to play a wow cartoon character.

I kinda like the features of the human face so people can see when you make the faces with soemote.

I think he actually said "exaggerated features" added for just that purpose.

Hopefully there's more faces you can make than what we saw.   I want to stick my tongue out.

I'm not the biggest fan of the direction they chose with their character models.  I would've preferred a more realistic approach myself.  That said, the list of features they plan on having more than makes up for the character models.  The features blew me away and overall this was more than I was expecting.  This is the first beta I've bothered signing up for honestly.  Can't wait for it and am really looking forward to this one.

Real question is how realistic would a realistic approach truely be with a destructible enviroment, not to mention the facial expressions.

The character models somehow remind me more of torchlight or wildstar. Personally I liked them. I'm sure the cartoony look will give vastly better fluidity of movement and combat/passive animations.

Ok I haven't posted about anything in awhile on this site but I will post about this. As an old time EQ fan I was a bit shocked at the character models. It's definitely not what I expected. That being said. I could live with it. The animations are fluid. Their is actually color and textures that are amazing. Which is something that the last incarnation of EQ was sorely lacking. I also believe that with the stylized graphics they are using, it will give them more creative direction and freedom, especially with those emotions.

If there is one thing I want to ensure though. Is that they give us not only tons of ways to customize our characters faces and hair, but also they have a large variety of gear and weapons that will stand apart. Complete with a dye system. So that not every other character out there that's the same race as me looks almost exactly alike...I'm looking at  you GW2!

For those that don't want to read through 3 pages of nonsense, the basic summary of what this thread contains is: "moan moan moan, this game looks like WoW with its cartoony art-style even though it looks nothing like WoW. I'm dull and wanted this game to look and age just as terribly as the first two games, I just loved the horrific-looking "realistic" graphics from EQ2, they should definitely do that again, I hate change, someone please change my diaper."

The sheer amount of whining you people do, I mean seriously. This game looks great, and unlike the first two games, 10 years down the line it won't look like complete crud. It's bright and interesting, and a really good way forward, especially considering the whole dyamic player-created content using voxels. That would have never worked any other way.

But no, of course if it doesn't fit your exact idea for EQN, then it's suddenly terrible. I'm just glad I only care about the possibilities that this game can potentially bring, and not get hung up about something as ridiculous as this.

I love the graphics. Very detailed and well done. Glad they went that direction rather than pseudo-realism that would look bad in a few years.
