[General Article] EverQuest Next: Landmark - Creatives & Crafters Rejoice

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

During last weekend's SOE Live, the team introduced the world to the EverQuest Next companion world, Landmark. We sat in on the Landmark panel to find out more about this exciting tool for builders and crafters. See what we found out and then leave us your thoughts in the comments.

Interestingly, Landmark claims can be shared. The example the team gave is a guild wanting to create a magnificent guild hall for EQN. The claim's original owner can open up individualized permissions to all members who can then go out into the Landmark world to collect the needed resource. Once finished, and if approved by SOE, the blueprint for the hall can be taken straight into EQN when it arrives. There is a caveat, of course: When the hall is taken to EQN, it is as a "blueprint" rather than as a completed structure. Guild members will still have to go out and collect the resources to build the permanent structure in EverQuest Next. In essence, Landmark is the test ground.

Really cool stuff! One thing I really want to find out, is how will building work in the actual EQN game? This is something they didn't quite get into at all. I'm sure it will be at least some what more restrictive than landmark.

Um yeah. That's an amazing world building tool. Has nothing to do with crafting though.

It sounds a lot like what Cryptic is doing with the Foundry, except for three important differences:

    1.  Landmark allows for greater freedom of landscape and architectural customization.

    2.  Landmark seems to only be limited to landscape customization, while Foundry allows for the creation of stories, quests, and creatures (including mobs and NPCs)

    3.  Foundry does not have any cash shop anything; everything is available from the start.

Since when is Tuesday a direction?

I grew up building Lego's and I've always retained an imagination for building stuff. This program looks like Lego's went digital and started juicing steroids on a daily basis.

Think you have to look a Ryzom Core as well.

This will give me lots of filler until the actual game comes out.  I can't wait to start designing!

The presence of a cash shop is a big danger sign to me to not to get too interested/invested.

i can certainly see myself becoming almost dangerously addicted to landmark.

you know what would be great?  some way to export the stuff you create via landmark to use in your pen and paper RPGs.  AKA the ultimate dungeon maker

I miss the day's where you just paid to play. I truly hope this is not a cash shop leaching game. I am so excited about this game but not being able to just pay a fee worries me

It's what we are making im sure your going to love it. Its going to be hand crafted by the brightest and best crafters in the history of mmorpg's there has never been a more sophisticated and well thought out crafting trade in any other mmorpg. It's trully revolutionary and it just takes my breathe away everytime I think about the endless, wonderful, and beautiful possibilities.

Doh, Foundry is most definitely tied to the cash shop, you have to pay after you use foundry a few times.  Foundry is also very limited.  Even Neverwinter II had better tools.

Landmark blows Neverwinter away, admit it.

"If it can be created, if it exists in a builder's mind, it can be built whether is a spaceship, a modern city, a historic landmark...in short, anywhere the imagination goes. "

I especially like how the building projects can be very large scale through division of labor. It doesn't have to be just one guy making a hut, you should be able to make very large structures. It also brings back one of the original meanings to the word 'guild'.. heh.

Wonder how long it'll be until some guild makes an absolutely massive Statue of Veeshan.

I'm finding it confusing on why anyone would want to spend time crafting/creating only to have their work destroyed. There is pride in well crafted items, buildings, etc. Where is my misunderstanding in this?

I'm not into this separate world builder idea.

Everything has to be approved. That means you can't have anything that breaks copyright laws. So there'll be no replicas or well known building or areas from any other fiction or anything like that.

The most fun people had in Minecraft was being able to recreate something they have a passion for.. that won't be possible here. It'll just be a lot of varied, yet meaningless, buildings.

You might be able to build a spaceship in Landmark.. but there's no way that's going to be approved and put into EQ Next.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Interesting, EQ Next will end up being filled with buildings shaped like pixel art and towers that look like giant penises... swell.

Actually from what I understood it does, because you don't create things out of thin air but the same as in minecraft you need to get the material for this first in Landmark as well. So while you shape a block of stone or a piece of leather in Landmark, you have to get it first and turn it into some useful material. Or if you want to do a window, you have to first make glass etc.

How you know that? As long someone does not profit from something, the risk of copyright enforcement is rather low hm? It is like saying "you are not allowed to do Star Wars pics in Photoshop because someone owns the Star Wars IP". It just excludes copyrighted material from being used as something to be sold by cash into EQN or to other players. Though I'm not even sure if that was ever enforced in Second Life for example, people definitely redid IP protected things there and I'm not aware of any repercussions on the world or the company behind it ...

No, things imported into EQN are CS approved. How they are going to check what happens in Landmark though ... that might take quite the army of people for testing. Or maybe you can just flag something as inappropriate and that helps to speed up the process.
