The so called "realistic" models look bland and generic.

The ESO models are by far the best imo with GW2 coming next at the 2nd place.

EQN are well hmm ok-ish for the human but i dislike the Kerran model.

WOW's are the worst by far.

To me the EQN female is head and shoulders above the others as far as showing some life/character/depth.

    You forgot to mention clevage...

I've played all those games, the ones released anyway, and I liked TERA's gfx the best.

I like how geared the wow example was especially right next to the geared gw2 model, at any rate eqnext looks wonderful to me and thats all that matters

Rift's character models look OK during their idle poses, but once they start walking/running/fighting the poor animation just ruins it.

When I look at that Kerran image... Is it cell shaded? I am reminded of Borderlands 2 somehow rather strongly.

I've only played half those games, do any other current games have the same lighting and detail as what we've seen in EQN so far? For an alpha build, it seems way a head of the competition as far as graphics go.

Armor casting shadows on player models seems to be a newer effect (Forgelight only MMO engine that has this?) and the cloth/hair moving in the wind (not new to gaming, but new to MMOs?).

Still images tell one story, watching/playing the games gives a lot more insight. Watching the latest footage from Quakecon, ESO looks pretty terrible in action. Lifeless, bland, dark characters with little visual detail (from what I could see), not to mention the red outline thing for combat, immersion breaking and then some.

EQN models could literally be used to make a decent quality movie. They seem natural and alive within their world, not simply placed there like a lot of games. Wouldn't doubt we see some "cartoon" based on the game if it got real popular.

At first I hated the art style. But after comparing them to other games, EQN models are much more alive. It will make for very interesting game play.

My favorite game for its graphics and detail..... Age of Conan.

Perhaps we can see that comparison.

AOC looked pretty good when it came out, but it is aging. Too me, there is too much plastic/dead eye look going on. Above is a good pic, a lot of them show how the models seem placed in the world instead of part of it.

Nah.. Disney would sue SOE for using Mufasa without permission.

agreed, they do look pretty good. If was going to rate a game solely on how the player toons looked like, then EQN wouldnt even be in the top 10. image

Yea but Rifts doesn't look that good in motion, I think Terra or GW2 are the best right now but something about the camera or the way it is played really seems to not do the characters justice in GW2....in rifts it is just the very bad animations...they don't go well with the environment....

The fact that games that are several years old now, have better character graphics/detail/animations however is not a good thing for an up and coming MMO to be having to deal with. They need to be at least as good, or better than. Inability to produce that will be the first significant hurdle the game will have to clear, and i doubt that any amount of in game 'gimmicks' will be enough to overlook that. Solid gameplay will obviously help a great deal, but as yet there is no evidence to suggest that is the case. image

EQN is quite impressive in this regard. GW2 has self-shading, but it's not as detailed as EQN's version seems to be. I think FFXIV is supposed to have both self-shading and wind physics at release and well, it is a very pretty game.

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

This probably won't win me any friends but the design of the EQ2 Kerra look really derpy, like a human wearing a gorilla-cat hybrid mask. That said the EQN Kerra could use some work to sharpen his face up, but the body is much better, more bestial. IMO the style of the EQN human female is growing on me, I need to see more though and hopefully the facial features will be more noticeable to completely justify the Pixar direction.

That specific ESO model looks pretty weak, although I am sure some of the other ones must look better and I like the Elder Scrolls armor designs. Although they tend to be less flashy, which is nice.

GW2 is pretty solid except I disliked the human character creator, all males must have a baby face, or the Clint Eastwood as the only man option.

Wow still looks like wow lol, I have their models burned into my minds eye lol...so blocky...so bright.

That Gandalf in the bottom pic looks so lifelike :P

People who are complaining about the graphics never played EQ. Those models...dear god. The Ogres and Trolls looked like something out of Ren and Stimpy.  The Dwarves and Gnomes were equally silly.  The humanoids looked fairly normal, but still cartoonish. I loved them though, and the Luclin models looked bland and generic compared to them. It feels like the EQN models are actually returning to the exaggerated and unique features of the original EQ models. While I am not a big fan of the xbox hueg shoulderpads, I think the models in general are fine.

People should worry less about making their srs asian waifu and more about gameplay and immersion, because those are the two features that may be sorely lacking. Not the character models and certaintly not the environment.

I laughed so hard I fell off the chair :)))

I think this sums up pretty much all the conversations of EQN characters :)

Horrible, horrible art type. Can't take it seriously if its all Mufasa

When taken into perspective... we've seen one face of only two races. Even the cheapest of MMOs has at least five different looking faces per race.

All of the models shown in the OP, except EQN, can be played and experienced right now. We can see how they act when we interact with them, what kind of facial movements and body inflections they have.

Can we honestly say that any of the other models shown have the same type of facial movements as was shown in a single series of EQN? In real time when considering SoEMote? Saying one model looks better than another is fine and is of course objective but the ability for NPCs to have the reactions shown far and away seperate it from what's out there.

I mean the TERA models, for example, look great. I especially like the part where you hail them and they talk to you without moving their mouth. Very immersive.

the western game models are usually the worst.. im glad eqn actually looks good

I agree, western MMO models always looked weird to me. They always try for some degree of realism that tends to dip its toes into the uncanny valley. Aion and TERA look great because they try to emulate the anime style which in its own way is cartoony. GW2 is the only western MMO that looks decent to me.

The EQN model looks to me by far more alive and full of character compared to the other models. However I can understand if some people are put off by the stuffed animal look of the Kerran but you got to admit the female wizard look sharp.

And creating a half-man half-cat is serious business.

EQ was my first MMO. I got it the day Kunark came out. I thought the graphics were awsome, back then. Looking back, they look just terrible.

Comparitivly, I think that today, EQN's graphics look pretty good.

But that's just a matter of taste.

    I also like White Castle.
