What should the focus of an MMORPG be?

jesadjesad Member UncommonPosts: 882

Not sure if this has been done before, if so let it die, but I am wondering...What do you all think the focus of an MMORPG should be?

Should it be to allow the player to feel as though they are living in an actual fantasy world where the rules, although bent to facilitate the fantasy, are similar to our own?

Or should it be to provide the player with an actual game to play where achievement and winning are the priority and real world rules don't apply unless they are part of the challenge of whatever game is being presented at the time?

Or should it be something else?

And please don't say to make money because that's the no-brainer and you really wouldn't be working that hard to come up with it.

    For me its simple

An mmo should be what you (the player) wants it to be.

    Explanation :

When we plays dem games we should be allowed to do what we wish, in real life i work hard, i come home do usual stuff, but when i log onto my games I might run a multi-billion $$ empire, Command armies of 100s of men, Or even go around killing people at will because i can

The fact is when i play an mmo i do it for social reason, but also for a bit of 'escapism' to me an mmo should allow me to do what i want.

If i want to steal from you, then i should be allowed, if i want to destroy you, i should be allowed, If i want to grief you I should b allowed

When Devs start to put blocks on me being able to do what i want then the game ceases to be what "i want it to be"

    Thats what MMO offer me

This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

MMO's should be there to entertain, be social and have longevity.

That's kind of vague bro.  Pong was entertaining, social, and hung around for quite a bit.  Dig deeper.

Since you're asking about MMORPG specifically and not MMO, then I'd say it should be a roleplaying game with a massive number of concurrent players. Anything more specific is simply imposing arbitrary and personal restrictions.

To me an MMORPG should be focusing on Territory Control, Sieges, PvP and these would bring in other elements such as Diplomacy, Teamwork, Communities. But as we see, the new MMO's are focusing on soloing and co-op playing, instead of the "MM" (massive multiplayer).

Generally, an MMO's focus should be on role-playing... being able to make a character that suits your personality and playstyle, and to be able to do anything that suits your fancy. People(I'm assuming)  want to be unique and individualized, and want to socialize with other unique players.

Another important focus is the adventure or the story-line, feeling as if you're apart of the world and that your role in the game is important. If it's taking down large monsters and mobs to save a town, finding clues to a mystery, or just simply roaming around and discovering new places and things is something that gets me personally excited.

A final thing I believe is important is the competition because everyone loves competition.. whether it would be PvE or PvP I believe that game designers should focus on what can people do to show off their skills and see who's the best player because some people want to be recognized and rewarded. I know the usual ordeal are patches every two weeks or a month, but I think game masters or designers should be more involved in the game... they need to hold events to make the world dynamic and interesting. Like two world leaders start a war... or some big ass monster appears out of nowhere and needs to be stopped or else one of the cities will be ruined... or a mass murdered is on the loose and needs to be stopped, etc.

    It should be fun..

People like different things so not one MMORPG will be for everyone as we all have different views of fun..

For me its hardcore open world PVP full loot mmos, with full on territory control and so on.. others hate those type of games and love quest hub games..

MMORPG's should be all about escapism. Escaping into a fantasy realm where we can explore, have fun and be social (if they choose) with others. I've played a few games where they tried this, but tried to get cute with the jokes and puns and it ended up killing that feeling of escapism.

To clarify a bit, of course they are all "fantasy worlds", but often times they try and put real world elements/jokes/whatever into the game. For me, I don't play MMORPG's are any RPG game to see a pun on famous people names, or real world places and things. I play for the few hours I have to enter a different world and place and escape from the modern world.

The closer they can make a MMORPG to it's own living and breathing world and leave out any modern references I'd be all for it.

I think the question is wrong. It's like trying to ask what should be for dessert, and once you have the answer, eat only those desserts for the rest of your life.

I think different MMOs should have different focuses, so that there's something everyone likes, and once you get bored with one thing you can try out something different.

I think the focus should be on creating a world and the players get to explore that world, make it what they want.

Something might require a group, something just a player with skill, some things require pvp, some don't.

Challenging and fun. You should have to fight for your life from level 1 on.  It would be more fun than 2 shotting everything for the first 10 or more levels. Being scared for your characters life is fun imo image

The focus should be on being an mmo.   A persistent world with open ended massively multiplayer game play.   I prefer a virtual world and game play focused on player interdependency.

    Punish me.

    We require Discipline.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

MMORPG = Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game!

In theory would be group only play but its not its solo play with chat and some grouping left at end game. The grouping left was destroyed by GW2 and EQN wants to destroy it even more.

    Social (aka community) and Entertaining..

I want a game that focuses on Player vs Environment .  If I wanted PvP, I"d go play CoD or LoL.. or some other MOBA game.. For me the most rewarding experience is being involved in a public event that rewards the community..  Rift had a great concept with the Invasions, it just wasn't implemented good enough..  GW2 dynamic events are a big step in the right direction, but stumbled a bit..  I want a reason for a community to UNITE, then to play these stupid little esport pissing content..

What they "should be" probably goes no further than this definition.

What I "want them to be" is an entirely different question and open to personal taste and interpretation.

What they "usually turn out to be" is designed in such a fashion to likely attract the broadest customer base possible and generate a high return on their investment. (at least for the big money titles)

What they "tend to end up as" is titles that start out huge and then lose a substantial portion of their player base very quickly and become yet another footnote/also ran in the history of MMORPG's.
