I'm only level 4 which is obviously not the best level to judge an MMO but so far my experience hasn't really been that fun. The quests are really boring, the quest texts are just as. I was hoping to get into this game as I was hoping for an experience a FF fan would appreciate. Do the sell someone's wedding ring to pay off his debts quests improve to something of more substance? I was hoping for a more story based game with numerous nods to FF fans.. not a Japanese designed theme park MMO. I'm going to keep going and give it more time but less than optimistic at this stage.

If a game doesn't have you hooked from the very start, then the game has failed on a fundamental level. If you're not having fun, then don't bother slogging through the game to get to the "Good Part". It's not worth it.
While I agree in principle, MMOs in general have a tendency to start you off slow and slowly introduce you to good stuff. Seeing how so many people seem to be singing this game's praises, I'm assuming it gets better, I just want to make sure it gets better in the right ways and isn't just another typical theme park MMO where you boringly slog away at gather/kill quests all the way to max level.
Don't worry at level 20 the game changes into the GW2 login screen so you should be all set. But until then you will just have to settle for Final Fantasy series gameplay.......
Seriously, it sounds like the game may not be your cup of tea if you don't like the pacing, story, combat, graphics, atmosphere it seems pretty true to the FF style of gameplay.
IMO the game is not a game that will last most people a very long time but it is probably worth its pricetag, I played in beta to about 15 and I enjoyed it but it was sort of a fleeting enjoyment.. when the next beta came around I wasn't interested in playing again. Even with this I almost bought it and if I wasnt in a weird spot right now being pregnant and not gaming much at all I definitely would have still bought it for the story and basic experience. In the end I would say stick with it for now and if by 15-20 you still arent liking it then pass. I find a lot of MMOs aren't exactly "fun" at lvl 4 because you are too busy learning the games nuances (most of the time intentionally.. tutorialtype stuff) to be able to enjoy it. Also.. when you can pick a new err hmm job? i forget the correct term for FFI but your second class.. do it and make sure you save all your old gear!! If you want to play a different armor type for your second class you can choose that quest reward.. example you have lvl 9 pants but another quest offers lvl 9 pants.. choose the other armor type for later.
sorry i sort of rambled but I dunno, its good advice.
Sadly from Lv1 to Lv15 is considered a beginner tutorial , that was what the dev said. I personally feel its too long before experiencing the game, and to be honest even all the way up to lv25 is considered also easy and doll.
they did that to make it easy for people who are new MMO so they introduce them slowly to every element of the game. for veteran MMO though it is quite boring. my personal opinion they over did it, they can finish everything within 10 levels
I agree, that if a game doesn't have you hooked from the very start, the the game has failed on a fundamental level. But that's just one aspect. First impressions are very important, but they're not everything.
I don't judge an mmo by the merits of its tutorial. FFXIV tutorial is very bland. Questing sems bland.
Some of my first impressions were pretty good though. I love the graphics. Tell the truth, I'm a bit of a graphics wh*re. This game delivers on that front. The character creator was above average. That left a good first impression.
It's not all bad... and when the mobs get bigger and badder, I'm sure ( I hope ) it will get 'better'.
The game continously adds new elements about every 5 levels all the way until level 30 as far as know now... it could add more as we keep leveling.
at level 4 you have not unlocked anything and are stuck with nothing but starter quest basically. So what you see honestly is not the game outside the quest part. Sorta stupid design, but it is impossible to judge the game before level 20 honestly.
1) Leveling Quest (100s and 100s of Oldschool WoW style quest), Fate (Hundreds of them), Class Quest (every 5 levels)
5) Hunting Logs (new log every 10 levels)
10) Ability to Change Classes, mix and match abilities, Leves (every 5 levels), Guildhest ( new every 5 levels), Inn Room (not really content but you get it)
15) Ability to travel to other Nations, Dungeon unlock (About every 5 levels)
20) Ability to join Grand Company (Do not think you can in phase 4) which includes Free company leves (every 5 levels), item turn in for points which can be used to get rewards from the GC vendors. Ability to get your own chocobo.
25) Outside more from below nothing new unless I forgot something.
30) Access to PvP
35+)? no one knows until launch.
more or less for the first half of the game it continously adds more and more content. The battle speed increases. Grouping begins to become more common. If a non-action mmo battle system is game breaking then yea probably should quit not the mmo for you. If you liked the WoW style you should continue to play until around level 20 then make your judgement, quit before that and you probally risk missing out on something you would of enjoyed.

To OP:
My two cents is... Come on! Lvl 4 and you are so disappointed? I tought you will quit at the intro... but you couldn't because the escape key doesn't work
Honestly, I have preordered this game after betas. This was the first time when I faced to the FF series. Classical, old school combat style... but if you sum all things together you will see effect of synergy and booom! You'll pleased by the game.... As I am constantly.
That's not really fair.. the quest text alone early on is enough of a reason to be disappointed. I don't expect to be seeing epic fights early on but I expect certain standards from the get go.
Thanks to everyone else who replied, I'll keep going until at least level 20 and see how I get on.
Tera is a grindfest and the combat is horrible? Beautiful only gets you so far. GW2 was a great game until max lvl and I didnt play it much after but I feel I got my money's worth. Sort of like any big name single player game =P
job change maybe?
I played all the CBTs and really did not like the game at all. I found the quests dull and the reems upon reems of quest text with vids u cant tab through soo dull. In fact I can safely say I thought game sucked big time and only played a grand total of about 12 or so hours in total through all the CBts just because it was so boring.
However I am currently still a bit in between games while I wait for the next MMO releases so I thought OBT what the hell may as well dive in for a few hours and maybe try a different class. Man am I glad I did, I am having a blast, still finding there to be way too much quest txt but I am getting into the story and finding the class system and swapping between classes etc very interesting (looking forward to getting my Job sorted). Game was still dull at first but it is growing on me so much so that I have now bought the collectors edition, just so I can see if it carries on improving.
So to sum up I can say the game is nothing amazing but it does get better and for some like me it grows on you and you may find it is at least worth a months gameplay, more than that I cant say.
"That's why they make chocolate and vanilla icecream" - My Dad.
Anyone that pretends like Tera has horrible combat automatically loses all remaining arguments on account of having terrible taste.
The game grows on you. The combat gets a bit better, and you open up more stuff to do as you level. Saving grace of the game is its dungeons in my opinion. Sadly someone stupidly had the idea it would be a good idea to further reduce light party sizes to 4 players... So good luck queuing as DPS.
should get a bit better after people can switch to scholar but they def needed another healer class but you could also thought aparty together your self
A lot of folks aren't going to like ARR. It does tend to be a bit repetative. I found levels 6-15 pretty dull (CBTs) overall but I am glad I decided to come back. Once I moved past the level 15 starting areas and went off to the 2nd city it got interesting again.
Lots of FATEs with a lot of people chipping in (over time how that will work out...not so sure) and generally having a good time. More people, more chaos more fun.
Overall I am going to give it a serious run for a month or so. I won't regret the time or the money if it doesn't keep on for me but at least for now I am glad I returned.
I could not disagree more. EVE, and Wushu have two of the most boring starts you ever will see. The beauty of well built games is they get deeper, more immersing, and better as you play. These are games with staying power, games you play for years. Lately we've been given games that don't get anymore exciting than the first hour.
That being said, if the game is a carbon copy of the the traditional themepark, 10 minutes may be enough.
I don't have a link, but I'm pretty sure you can sit on the furniture, and that you can craft furniture as well.
That's good to know!
