This is the EQN track, composed by Jeremy Soule:

I am just taken aback.
I grew up with such themes as .. well what everyone knows EQ as:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKj36GJj_i8
EQ has an unmistakeable theme, there is no way to not recognize it. Watering it down is not a good way to go.
Did SOE lose the rights to the original theme?
I'm wondering because I would think SOE would want to at least promote it.
There is a unique theme to EQ, and if it isn't promoted, then something is amiss? .. because the "new" theme stinks, IMO.

1. If you saw what they said before they played the music they said this is a pre production sample for the show and is nowhere near the finished product.
2. The original song sounded ok for 1999 but sounds like a mobile phone tune now
3. Your seriously bagging Jeremey Soule?
Wash your mouth out with soap.
I have to call it as I see it.
If Mr. Soule had something major to offer we would have seen it during the presentation. That was his moment to shine, right?
I'm sure Jeremy is very talented. However, he may not be able to use the original theme, because of legality,. Think about that.
What he came up with was not what he wanted. Look at his face during the presentation - he had a song, but he was told not to play it; rather play something else off the top of your mind! ..he was not proud, you can see it in his face. Then again, who could be proud to show a collection of random notes without a theme, as part of a major sound project?
I'll leave you with the "Bridge" theme .. muahaha .. evil me!

I like the new theme better, and it's not even finished yet.
The old theme sounds... old. It was good for that time. It isn't anymore.
Jeremy Soule was probably just shy about releasing an alpha of a theme. People can get very sensitive about their work.

Currently playing: GW2, EVE
Excited for: Wildstar, maybe?
i like it better than EQ1
and its comparable to my like for the EQ2 theme

I think you're mostly resistant to change. The old theme is behind the times now, definitely.
If it should be compared to anything, I feel like it should be the excellent soundtrack for EQ2.
The new theme is still very rough around the edges, it has a few moments where the tune went up and down a bit too high and a bit too fast. But overall I think it can grow into something really good.
I do hope that they put some soundtracks in that are more reminiscent of the old games, but it needn't be the main theme itself.

Come one now. You guys are even complaining about the opening theme music now?!
Different from the original of course, but that doesn't make it bad. It sounds great.
The people who miss the old theme I can sympathise with, but its a new game,? a new era. Time to move on.
Smed reminded us that the score is an "early, early, early" version of the theme to EverQuest Next. He described it as "rough" and "all synth," implying a symphonic score to come.
Synth-only rough draft with no real instruments, and it is likely subject to change... guess you missed that part?
Even the link you have the info says it is a work in progress...
SOE did not lose the rights to their own theme. Ever heard the EQ2 theme? Similar to EQ's, but a great piece of music on its own. EQN takes it another step and I'm sure the final product will be great as well.
From your posts in different threads, it is obvious you are looking for EQ3 and a reboot of EQ. EQN is not that game.
Lore is redone, music redone, races/classes redone (looks like only Elf and "Dark" Elf this time), world map redone, etc etc. While everything is still "EQ" it is not EQ.
Hearing the EQ theme after almost 15 years still gives me chills, I'm sure some young gamer will have the same experience with EQN.
This is true. while this not so important imo, the original Everquest had a score that sticks. I see no reason to change it. A memorable tune is like a trademark. That's why Coca Cola does not change its Christmas Truck Song without a reason.
Maybe this really is only a early draft, because otherwise Jeremy Soule must have hat a really bad day. Anyway, this is not a second Morrowind-theme.
Its the same thing as with the character graphics. Something is wrong with SOEs art department.
I have a feeling that nostalgia has huge role in this case. The first one sounds just as generic and unmemmorable as the second one You must have really strong feelings to the first game if you bonded with the music so well, it's a good thing I think.
Soule is my favorite composer alive. I love the original EQ theme, and the EQ2 version, and was hoping Soule would redo it. However if you listen to other examples of EQN's music, what Soule is doing is weaving this new theme throughout all the tracks. I really think it works.

Soule is good at the gentle stuff more than the main themes, you'll find the atmosphere of EQN will be as good as Elder scrolls 3 - 5.
Soule's music sounds great.
Not even comparable to the somewhat cheesy original main theme.
Others just shoot the zombies which are chasing us. Whereas I try to talk to them.
If the brainless realized that it is dead, maybe, just maybe, it would lay itself down to rest...
I wondered about this too.. its not that Soules work is bad. its great actually but the problem im having with most of his soundtracks is that they are too much alike. Ive played a lot of games with soule music and while playing GW2 for example some combat tracks reminded me of Total Annihilation or supreme commander, and the ambient music reminded me to TES a lot of times. Its all too much in the same wavelength to me
I thought the composer of EQ2 (laura Karpman) did a great job on her music and i dont understand why she wasn't chosen. EQ2 music was very symphonic and fitting the high fantasy theme.

This one for example. i cant recall a game that has a soundtrack that really is like that. i think soule just fits more with the more darker grim games. EQ is like a fairytale world for most, but maybe they want to change that
the new theme is too wow. i mean am i doing this right, everything we don't like in EQnext is "too WoW" right?
i thought the new theme was amazing, guess we can just chalk this up to hating on anything thats not just a remake of the original EQ.
I think its pretty good. i think no matter how the music turned out, if it isn't the original then there is going to be backlash. What I cant figure out is why they didn't keep the old music. I love the new one but with so many things "non-EQish" in this game, little things like keeping the same music could help.
OP doesn't like the EQNext direction so has to complain about everything is the most likely explanation.
I loved the Original EverQuest Theme. It certainly was fitting for the mood of EQ and very recognizable. A true masterpiece in its time and will remain one of my favorite game themes forever.
I really like the new EQN Theme and the more I listen to it...the more it grows on me. It's mystical, solemn, emotional, subtle and relaxing. An absolutely beautiful composition for being unfinished and unrefined. However, as much as I'd like to say it's defining of EQN, I cannot...from what I know so far.
This beautiful piece of Masterly Crafted Music is setting a stage of Elegance & High Fantasy...to which SOE is gonna commence trashing the stage and kicking over the amps with this TWITCH Style Action Combat Gameplay.
I apologize for complaining about this play style yet again, but it really is the biggest turn-off of EQN for me. I guess what I was really hoping for was "Mystic" Quest in the form of EQ3...or something like that.
Echoes of Things to Come...hmm...guess we'll have to wait and see...

Or I could also resort to Ad Hominems, like you do ..
You may try to keep on topic about the thread, namely how Mr. Soule's music is a disaster, compared to both past compositions, and to past EQ1 scores, and how his "latest" EQN score is a background filler for a 2 hour history channel documentary. :P

Was it a mistake to release an unfinished title score? Probably but the news that Soule was working on EQN was the bigger news IMO and why they revealed it at Live. It was indeed a weird stage moment and it seems that even Smed was confused on what played by the look on his face. Soule looked way too nervous which may have been being in front of so many people or knowing that what was about to play was not expected.
I absolutely love the EQ/EQ2 themes and I hope the EQN theme has more tones from the first two in by the time it's official.
I think so.
To my original assertion, I'd say SOE didn't renew the contract with Verant Interactive, who owns the original EQ theme.
Verant got swalled by SOE, sure sure .. but when Verant started, they couldn't afford to buy songs, so they likely licensed the songs (Verant was a startup company as a project by SOE employees! .. no funding!) to a third party.
When SOE took control of Verant, they also got access to info on the licenses, with no guarantee of obtaining them. The holders of the music contract (Verant license holders) could be asking a HUGE amount, which SOE isn't willing to pay, for example, as a reason why there is no EQ music in EQN.
EQN is a pretty big title, so I'm sure the music rights are also big (and expensive to whoever sells /buys them).
It's not unreasonable to think this.

Soule is alright, but the way he mass produces video game music is something I'm not a big fan of. Many of his new tracks sound exactly the same and lack personality. He made excellent music for some older games, like Morrowind, Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Neverwinter Nights, however.
I couldn't tell his Oblivion/Skyrim/GW2/EQN soundtracks apart, and that's a very bad thing IMO.
