This is not a review, I do not pride myself as a reviewer nor do I aspire to be one. I'm also the type that finds reviews some what pointless.

Impressions on the other hand can be a fun topic.

First up: The tutorial, I've said enough about it at this point to not have to go into much detail, as I've already been labeled as crying in regard to it. I'll just say it needs some improvement as well as a path to avoid it from the start,  I'd hate to have to go through that locked in sequence every single time I start an alt as an example.

Combat: Almost perfect for an MMO, it has the right touch of excitement mostly achieved through flashiness. It's the kind of smoothness you want to see in an online game.

While the cool down was off putting at first, I grew used to it fairly quickly. That's when the real fun began, it's been a while since I played an MMO where killing in and of itself was such a fun time waster. I rarely got the run down feeling you get playing certain MMO's that just reek of dullness, combat feels fluid, tight and effective. I really can't see much of a negative about it unless you simply prefer twitch.

Graphics: need I even comment on them? They're simply gorgeous. Performance while I played was silky smooth.

Questing: A mixed bag of nostalgic pleasure and "come on now, really?!?" frustration. The dialogue and writing has it's charm, it felt very oldschool JRPG in many areas, yet felt extremely bland and tedious in others. It has the type of stuff you'd both want to see and not IMO. It has whimsical as well as gruff characters like most RPGS, yet it has bland lifeless filler fodder in equal measure like many MMOs.

Presentation: Both great and dull. The cutscenes are great, some of the writing is great, yet at other times it's extremely tedious or just filler. As with questing it's a mixed bag. One that you'll have to judge on your own.

Overall: I like the game for the most part, there are some approaches I'd rather see like VO and a better selection of quest types early on. AT present the jury is still out for this judge. Right now it's not a day one purchase priority for me, yet I may pick it up at some point.

Feel free to share your impressions or blast mine.

This game has something that's been missing from mmos. The level of polish is very good, even the UI sounds are well done. I'm playing a lancer and its fun.

I just hope it doesn't get boring like GW2 did after some time.

    Not a bad review.

I think you might be a little tough on the game, but it can take it :-D

Also, I don't think they designed it really thinking about "alts" I mean you can do everything on one character, the only reason to have an alt is looks, which you are more than welcome to make another toon for the looks, it's just I don't think that's going to be the mainstream. Having a tutorial that is forced is a little annoying for some people I can imagine, but I don't think of it as a problem when the story is so compelling and fun.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts OP, hope you pick up the game.

Very good point here, as you're right. Myself however, I prefer to start a different toon for different paths, I do this whenever given the opportunity, you should see how many Skyrim saves I have :). Definitely a preference thing, and not something that degrades the game for anyone dissimilar to me.

I like my warriors bulky and tall (think Conan) and my Rouges the opposite. If that makes sense.

That may gimp you in this game.  Since to take full advantage of any job you'll want to level 3 classes.  Probably not a big deal if you don't plan on being a hardcore raider but ya.

Oh I understand that, I'm an SWG vet the class system is a major draw for me.

Edit to add, I'm not being snarky there, on reread it kinda sounded that way to me ha. But ya I totally get that, I'd still like to keep an overall vibe per toon if you catch my drift.

In phase 3 I took every quest I came across with my first class and it was a grind... This time I've been spreading them out so that I'll have some for all the classes I level and just do everything else FATEs, logs, leves, etc. I usually decide to take it or leave it depending on the rewards, level and location of the quest. Keeps it from feeling like a grind and gives future classes something to do.

Wasn't a big fan of the combat at first but it's growing on me, it has potential.

So far I do like the story and cutscenes, the flashbacks of the old world rock image

Combat is quite boring standard mmo     imo ,  but I played RIFT and that had 100s of skills  ROGUE tanking in RIFT is a lot more fun.

Also playing a tank in FF14, its ok but yeah just doesn't seem as good as fast and smooth RIFT combat . However I may change my mind once I get higher level .

The animation in this game is a lot better than RIFT.

I like the class / job idea .  Couple of things just ruin it for me in some ways , that would be zoning , and the fact that everything has a name tag on it .

I dunno maybe Ive played too many MMO's and this one isn't very special at all .

My favorite kick in the nads is when I was doing a level 5 quest and the NPC was "judging" my gear. I had to have everythiny up to par for me to continue my questing and during that time I had everything but pants on my character. I sat there and said, "Oh come on! where am I going to get some pants?!".

I completed this quest at level 8 with my legacy character, couldn't find a quest where I'd get the pants for reward so I switched to Gladiator and equipped high lvl. pants from that class and completed the quest.

Just hit lvl17 on my pugilist.

Visuals are stunning and the game is running really well. The quality is top notch. The music and sounds are insane. I love that the melee classes can move and attack, especially when I'm playing one - for once. The 2.5s GCD was a little annoying but you get used to it. What really blew my minds was the movie cutscenes, reminded me of the old FF games. Really well done. Two of the continents (Thalanan was one of them) are really pretty and I find myself looking at the scenery a lot. The quests ranged from awesome to meh. Classes and jobs seemed cool, though I only tried two of them. You can move around fast by teleporting if you wish, which I think is cool if you're in a hurry. Some of the areas are a little tricky to navigate at times, and you could see a lot of questions in chat asking directions.

Only thing I'm a little curious about is the lack of abilitys. At lvl 50 you only get like 16 spells + some from quests. You basicly press 1-2 buttons for half the beta (1-20).

Still, after listing one good thing after another,  I'm not sure if I'll keep playing after the beta. I've been spoiled by F2P games I think. While I enjoyed the game, there isint really anything that I can justify buying and paying for. Nothing that makes it really stand out/something I havent seen.  I might try a month though. We'll see.

This is pretty much it for a while with CNJ.  Up to lvl 30 you will only add Stone II into the mix...

At that point you could move up to WHM and get your regen heal and aoe attack, so you'll be doing a bit more.  But combat will never be exciting as a CNJ afaik.  You could also pull some more dps abilities from cross class skills, maybe another DOT from ACN or something.  Still, this is pretty spot on for leveling up a CNJ haha.

  • NetSageNetSage Member UncommonPosts: 1,059
If you're CNJ why are you even soloing stuff :P.  Dungeons and guildhests are where it's at for you.
