Today's MMOs are services as much as they are games, and the quality of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn's service thus far is completely at odds with the quality of the game we received. This week, we break down the service aspect in part one of a two part series.
I messed around in a couple of the beta phases and tempered my expectations, but enjoyed what I did get to play. It wasn’t until Phase 4 that I found myself completely excited like I hadn’t been for quite some time now.
And then, just like that, it all went to hell.

This launch has been very disastrous. While it has been a common issue with various MMOs in the past, this should not have happened as this is a "second launch" of the game. As a result, many people feel like they have been burnt twice by this and that feeling is completely legit.
Thankfully, I am on a lower population server and I play at odd hours so I have no problem getting into the game. I am personally enjoying the game, but I hope that this is resolved soon so that others may actually get to play the game they purchased.
I still don't understand all of the excitement over this game. It has pretty graphics and they have taken character customization 1 step further (multi roles with one character) other than that with the 2.5 sec cd and poor service record it's not a game I'm remotely even interested in.
When is someone going to come out with a truly innovative mmo worthy of my time?
We just get more of the same in a prettier package.
if u stay away from a good game just because u have to read a lil when u register ur code then u miss out alot.
Stay away from this game like if it was the bubonic plague!
Not because of the game itself, but because of the extremely poor, frustrating and overly complicated website (which is also poorly designed), the catastrophic launch and ongoing problems and finally because they treat non-JP customers like crap!

Bill, I agree completely. However:
1. I must be a genius or very lucky as I've had zero problems with account registration or code entry.
2. 1017 is the bane of my MMO existence right now - those 4 numbers from the Seven Hells suck the very soul out of my fun center.
3. Despite the tedious and confusing systems, it's still better than PlayOnline.
4. The game is worth it once you figure it all out and actually get in - don't deny yourself a chance to play it.
My favorite MMO of all time was basically broken in one form or another and I played it for over 8 years. This is a tiny little pothole in an epic road trip.
Bill didn't write this story, MikeB did. FYI
Exactly my experience also. I had no problem at all registering and getting early access. 1017 is a plague from hell. Game is so fun once you get in.

Shit I saw Bill's pic on the post, skipped over it when I read the post. Sorry Bill/Mike!
I don't really think it has that bad of poor service... When there's a problem they try to get it fixed as fast as they can.
my main problem is they launched a huge MMORPG, they knew TONS was wanting to play... about everyone I heard from that did the Beta said "I love this game"... Yet Square Enix launched not only with not enough servers, but seems they didn't have some set aside as back-ups for the rush.
New servers aren't suppose to be put up till next week. So that is DAYS of taking forever to get on the game.
This is there 2nd time around here and they had some of the same problems the 1st time around. I pointed this out last week and your fine Mod's gave me a 1day Ban when I did. SE will not get a 3rd chance in my opion.

Great game, but I agree, the service is frustrating as all heck. I dealt with PlayOnline and FFXI. I dealt with the XIV 1.0 fiasco. But this being unable to login or even be placed in a queue, combined with the fact that I have about 4 friends who still can't roll on the server that about 15 of us Legacy players are on, has me almost ready to give up.
The kicker is, they had plenty of time and should have been able to prepare for this with the magnitude of beta registrations they had. They HAD the metrics long before beta 4, early access, and launch, yet they were still unable to accommodate.
I dunno if its a PC thing, but I picked it up on PS3 yesterday and had 0 issues creating my account, registering, and getting to the charecter creation screen either. Getting that far took me no more than 10 min on my PS3.
With that said, 2 hours after registering I still wasnt able to create a toon and play on any of the "unlocked" NA servers. When it finally did let me create a toon and log into one of the unlocked NA servers, for some reason my toon was created on an EU one named Phonex (I flat out did not choose it). I logged out, tried to recreate my toon on another server, just kep getting erros. Very very bizzar ndeed lol

I remember back when I bought FFXI and tried making an account and registering my copy that I pretty much lost it at one point. I became so frustrated I was almost in tears. After taking a deep breath and taking more time than I dare admit I finally succeeded....
Come FFXIV, I was presented with that blasted Mog Station...after thinking I had found the button to enter my stupid code, I ended up with a second service account. Like was mentioned in the column, why the hell is that even an option?!
Here's the kicker. My account is a version 1.0 account. Meaning the digital CE I bought from Square-Enix themselves WOULDN'T HAVE WORKED ANYWAYS!
My version 1.0 account, i.e. the account I was perfectly playing Early Access with (when I could) needs a "special" CE upgrade, only for 1.0 accounts. UGH.
If there is a hell and I'm paying for being bad, this must be it.
I made a ticket. Found this thread with more victims (or idiots if you'd like to see us in that light) and saw a telephone number posted. Sweet! I call (last night) and the guy claims he escalated my ticket.
Here's the beauty: if they do escalate your ticket, I guess it disappears from the support page...I mean really?!
So I made a second ticket today asking if that was intended. I tried calling again but couldn't get hold of the support line. Maybe I was late, maybe they were not in the mood to answer to all of the people calling.
The Mog Station has been altered ever since the complaints started picking up steam.
