So, I've been married 13 years, been on the planet considerably longer, and I would never to pretend to understand how the female mind works. It's alien. I'm a programmer and a logical person, but I do not understand female logic most of the time.
Bye the same token, I cannot fathom the mentality of people who give their MMORPG characters the most idiotic names possible. To me it screams "I am an idiot, hear me roar" or worse. It's hard to even say the player is incredibly immature and inconsiderate of other players (as they destroy immersion and/or insult people).
I just don't get it.
FFXIV is FULL of people with really well named characters that fit the theme and setting. And it's equally full of sheer garbage. And I just don't get how you can give your character an incredibly stupid name or ripoff a celebrity name (especially a celebrity that's a scrub like say, Miley Cyrus - we have that on Ultros).
Are people really this unoriginal and lacking for creativity and/or intellect?
Since this is a P2P game, I expect better. As in, I expect there to be a naming policy that's enforced. Ole Yoshi doesn't care about AFKers though so I doubt he'll care about this either. As long as the money piles up...why care, eh?
I find it extra odd when developers don't care about their own product. If I spent years and millions making game lore and content for a game I would not want to watch avatars named "toilet seat" running thru it spoiling it. Money be damned. I'd remove those players and spare the other players from the visual atrocities.
I would like to have a "visual" /blacklist feature. I don't want to read idiots in chat. I also don't want to SEE idiots at all. I'd like to put idiots with stupid names on "visual ignore" since I surely don't want to group with people who are advertising their low mental capacities and would rather just not even know they exist. It's really unlikely that a winner that names their character "Boobs Mcslutbag" is going to even manage to dps without doing something stupid.
Now some may say, "why care, it's just a game." True. But I value immersion and the game is more enjoyable to me when I don't have dood-ish nonsense in my face. I don't want to be thinking, "wow, that person is an amazingly stupid person" when I see their avatar.
So if YOU don't care, you could at least be considerate of people who DO care, and give your avatar a name that fits the game, lore, content. Because you don't care, right? Why antagonize when you could just use a name that'll never bother anybody.
Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

It's a hobby of mine to screenshot terrible names in every MMO i happen to participate in.
It irritates the fuck out of me that people don't care enough to come up with something at least not idiotic.

I'll never get it either... I swear it is like this generation of gamers are such attention whores that they will try to do anything possible to stand out.
I play FF14 on the behemoth server and the ridiculouslness of the names as rampant... I guess they think they are being witty, but after 10 seconds they just look fkn ridiculous, or maybe they just don't give a shit...
When I play an MMO I really try to develop a character in a fantasy image of myself, taking time to tweak the character in every way possible, only to come across a character named something like"Dill Pickle", or Herorhoid Cream"
This seems more so in games that have first and last names as a requirement... players will try to pair any ridiculous 2 word phase together because they are so desperate to be noticed, shame really.. You would think a world like Final Fantasy there would be a more strict naming policy.

By far the stupidest name I've seen so far has been "Squall Dicaprio". At least that one is sorta trying.
Names like "Crackhead Withafelony" should be auto declined.

How is that relatable to the female mind? Also, female logic works in the same way as yours do. Difference is that whilst you justify and rationalize everything in your head you feel that you're doing something logical. To everyone else in the world your actions might seem irrational.
Cracked.com wrote a pretty good article on this, I'll link it below. They'll mention the reasons behind why women act as they do. Why they generally cry more often than men and such. But chances are that you will be able to relate to that in your relationship and have felt the same way.

Whilst I COMPLETELY and 100% agree with your sentiment in that I can't stand seeing people with childish names, I am also an adult and thus have the capacity to realise that whilst I cannot stand it, other people - also consumers who have paid the same as me - might like it.
So whilst I do happen to share your distaste of such names, your thread, unfortunately comes off as something like "I don't like people who have childish names. I don't care at all that some people DO like childish names. They are wrong. I am right. They don't deserve to play because of this. Yoshi fails and must be greedy for not agreeing with me."
I thus hope you can begin to see, that this thread and your little outburst and entirely as childish and unsavoury as some of the names floating about in-game.

I agree, that's stupid to use the celebrate/fame in the game with no their creative name to immerse with their character. However as I think they just waste their character during 30 day free. then drop and not come back... of course they not want subscription ... wishful think of F2P ....I think but not sure that Square-Enix will banned or give notification on their character are not permitted to use in game like warning. Possible will effective next 3 month from the launch. They want clean it up junkie such those names, RMT and others.

I don't get it either. I mean, I've had the same name for all my tank characters for the last 6 or 7 years. So my name is
First name: Riposte Last name: This. And that's what it has been forever. For a tank, it seems to be quite fitting. Granted not a real name so to speak. But I can't stand seeing all these anime names. I don't want anime by any means, but my friends do, and they always pipe up being like oh this person likes naruto, this person like gundam, this person that person etc.

I had no trouble being immersed in Final Fantasy 11 for years of playtime and my name was Jin from Tekken Series.
My XIV name is Grifter, one of my favorite characters from Wildcats comics and im still not having any trouble being immersed. I could have easily thought of something original but I didnt want to spend too much time trying to think of a name that im prolly going to end up hating later on and because I just wanted to get in the game and start playing already.
I dont make a big deal out of peoples name and they sure dont make me less immersed either. I actually think some of the names are funny and those people tend to have a laid back care free attitude which I enjoy when I group and chat with them.
If you ever stop and take a look at pretty much anything in life, you will see a recurring pattern. For every creative work of literature, art, film, etc., there will be about 50 rip-offs/copycats trying to ride it. Take basic television programming as an "in your face" example. When an original show springs up and becomes a hit, within the next few years, you see about 10 "new" shows spring up following the exact same plot and formula.
Point being, not everyone is a writer or a painter and brimming with creative uniquity. So, yes, I think a fair majority of the population are really that unoriginal. Those who can't create can still mimic, parody, and/or copycat other sources easily enough.
Everyone has a different view on what's amusing or clever, I guess. I've seen some comic name-phrases that were actually pretty darn clever(from my viewpoint). Of course, I've seen just as many that I found trashy and tasteless. I think modern day comedians are a superb example of differing ideas of what's witty and clever. Personally, I find almost every comedian today to just be vulgar and tasteless, but other people seem to like the crude, simple-minded "jokes".
I feel imagination is becoming a lost art, or a thing of the past, much like morals/respecting others/faithfulness to your spouse/proper etiquette, etc.
I'm starting to ramble... in short, you might find it easy to come up with some theme-fitting original names on the fly, but I don't think most people I've met in these games do(I know alot of my friends always just stuck with randomized names).
To insert a moral to my story: I think everyone is just looking for a way to amuse themselves, and one person's amusement isn't going to be tailored to the likings of others.
