This seriously is just baffling, I have been clicking to get in over and over just to get 1017. Why can't they just get a queue, it's at least better than this . . .
so you rather be in line for endless hours without any guarantee of getting in to a server thats already at capacity. id prefer that it said "don't waste your time, come back next week", which is pretty much what 1017 is.
I don't know, but it's probably not worthwhile second guessing people that do this for a living. Stop being an armchair director.
As others noted, there is a queue but it's relatively small when compared to the sheer volume of login requests. If you keep up with the announcements, server upgrades are coming very soon.

I would rather have the choice between the two. A 4 hour que also tells me "don't waste your time, come back next week" it also gives me the option of waiting in line if I so choose.

It's lose-lose. People will complain either way, which is probably why SE went for a more permanent - if slower, fix.
It really is frustrating, I was a 1.0 player so i was given 14 free days, half of those days are passed and i have spent 4 hours in game. Diablo 3 comes out on Tuesday, My friends and i have been looking forward to a good multiplayer couch session for a few years now, so im not sure if i will get to play after Tuesday. Pity game seems to have potential and i love the art / graphic style but it looks like im going to have to wait for FTP to come around till i really get to try it.
Well, this is a lot different than what other games do. Server queues are much more preferable to this.
I do suppose they do this for a living... but isn't this the second time around for this game?
Yeah, so what? If it was so easy to do as opposed to simply upgrading the servers, I think they would have done it by now.
It's kind of basic for MMOs to have a queue at release, like MMO 101. The fact they do not have them shows a certain level of incompetence.

I agree largely with their response to the higher than expected population. They need to be very careful about adding servers without thought as that has killed several MMOs by resulting in ghost servers after a few months. However, there's no reason they can't have a queue system also.
Right now you have players knowing it is luck of the draw whether or not they get in. Queues allow more fairness and flexibility. If I'm in a four hour queue, I grab a book or some work.
Yesterday I was in queue and 5 minutes later (and 2 spots up in queue ) I had the 1017 error after all. I think the 1017 error is not queue related but more related to the connection with the character server.
Does anyone know the maximum queue depth before you go 1017? I just emailed all of Square Enix NA (http://pastebin.com/xwC9Uuwt) I'll post what I hear back.
Because bad game design is why. Its apparent what they have set up to handle that stuff wasn't done very well I'd assume being why queue doesn't work, at least to the extent it should. SE really failed hard on this issue and its massively stupid on their part. Its MMo basics 101. There is a reason when you learn programming that one of the biggest methods is essencially the method of do queues.
The reason is when the queue system was in place the login servers were crashing due to the volume and nobody could get in. So they shortened the queue to 100-200 and while the queue is full everyone else gets that error.
And dont be so stuck up, server things are VERY difficult. If it was easy it'd have been solved already.

Just pray you don't DC and then get Error 3102, which is a real pain in the ass! "Character already logged in, please try again in a few moments for the log out process to complete"
I think the more important question is why did they not have an auto disconnect in from the start? If they did it would massively alleviatethe login problems. As it stands people are just staying logged in 24/7 so that they dont have to queue

I keep getting 1017 or i get in queue and whenever i get in a queue it's always quick, seems queue lengght is limited, if you exceed it, it's 1017 for you.

Yes the queue is retradly small and even if you get in it that not a sure thing. After 2 hrs today I get :Player in que 26 and then a few mins later I get :
Lobby has encountered an error and client closes on me!!!
OH JOY!!!!!
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
I think one thing they could do to MASSIVELY improve things is to kick players out of the server if they're afk for half an hour or so. I left for the dinner the other night and forgot about it, hours later after I remembered, I was still in game! So if lots of players are logging in at the start of the day and leaving themselves logged in even when they are going afk for hours no wonder no one can get in.
If the OP actually did his research he can easily find the answer directly from the lead designer. Its because the servers are meant to only hold 5k people, the queue programmed in is only for 100 people hence the error. They vastly under estimated their own success due to their previous failure. Then again the ignorant and unmotivated want to be spoon fed all this info that is quite easily accessible and wide spread.
As to no auto d/c I personally only have a theory from someone else. In Japan, I heard that ISP's auto d/c people's Internet after an amount of time due to japan's population density. Another theory stemmed from the use of FFXIV previous game engine which implemented bazaars which required people to stay logged in afk treating player characters as afk personal shops. This feature possibly could of been retained without foreseeing this type of issue especially in the west where ISPs do not auto d/c. Again this last bit is just theory.

This. But people wanna whine whine whine instead of researching the answer. SE has been more than open about the problem, the solution, and the time it will be fixed. They ALSO stated they'd give back the time lost but everyone seems to be ignoring that just so they can keep complaining.
It's like a lot of women I know (and a few guys).. they just MUST have drama or they'll die.
If they don't tack on a free 2nd month, this will be my only month. I played first two days of early access, have had the game since it was available for preorder...and unable to play any evening since. I'm not going to stand by my comp and continually try to log in every 5 minutes. It's ridiculous that they don't have a queue larger than 100 people on each server, and extremely poorly thought out. Anyone who apologizes for them is equally ridiculous, as there this is not some start up company.

Its easy to just dismiss an idea as stupid without considering the possibilities behind their reasoning. Let's remember these are professionals with years of experience in their respective fields leading these projects. They aren't dumb.
My guess behind 100 person queue is if the queue is designed to trickle people in slowly rather than let 1 in when another leaves. If its a trickle in queue that doesnt check for server capacity then the servers risk being crashed which they have been working hard to avoid this whole time. Some service is better than no service at all. Then again its just easier to cry abi things with minimal justification.
