Amazing Community

Alright so get this!  I was in town right?  I asked a question in the shout chat and then... get ready... I got an answer!  Like a real answer! That's not all, this has happened three times... THREE TIMES!  This is NOT what I expect in MMOs.   What I expect when I ask (in this case) how to get to a different main city is:

A: To go through the eastern most gate, find a llama, when you find this llama get on his back and call him Tony, Caress the llama, If the llama spits on you reset from step one, If the llama does not in fact spit on you, continue to the rainbow portal with sparkles, You will meet a man, this man does not have a name, if you call this man by any name he will call a bigger llama, The bigger llama will eat you and Tony. If you do not in fact get eaten, continue onwards into the cave, this cave is very wide, this cave has many dangerous critters and an ungodly amount of unnatural diseases, this cave highly resembles Miley Cyrus' vagina. If you made it through all this, congratulations, welcome to the new city.

B: A detailed explanation of how  someone in kansas banged my mom last night.

or C: A link to a youtube video of someone that doesn't want to give me up, nor let me down.  And/or a pointless but hilarious video of some random cat doing something stupid.  And/or a man in a suit with a giant head and huge smile singin trolololololol

But NO I got an answer, A legit answer!  I dunno man... Something doesn't smell right about all this.  It's very strange and I'm kind of freaking out right now.

No but seriously I can't believe how amazing the community in this game is.

[mod edit - thread title edited. please do not use clickbait titles!]

If WoW was released today even in its' entirety it would be f2p in 3 months.
Why is it still such a big deal?

I agree. This isn't the normal WoW mentality players MMO. People are usually helpful. I think part of it is that the game almost forces you to group. Be it to complete a dungeon to progress your story quest or just doing Fates.. people actually group up a lot. Its very refreshing. Reminds me of old school EQ when a group was mandatory.

    Just because I'm a gamer doesn't mean I drive a Honda.

That community seems to be occupied with pushing wildstar or GW2 right now and trashing this game...as a game with a bit of complexity, progression, and non action combat is their anti-Christ.

    *disclaimer

don't get me wrong wildstar looks fun, just we all know what community is following it..

Also I haven't seen ONE meme based fake conversation yet in game.

You know those mmo conversation where one person pretends to (for instance) love alienware and its the best.  The other people pretend that that guy isn't being a troll and start engaging in a fake argument about alienware....

No chuck jokes, no herp derp, people do mess around and act like a goof but its certainly a different crowd here.

You can get normal answers in Wow, even some normal jokes, in the early morning or late night. Everytime beside those - don't bother ask. :)

the community is great, filled with old school mannered people.   People who dont treat others like objects but like real people.   FF fans and old school gamers have always been overly friendly and helpful,  they knew what it was like to depend on others and work as a team.

I dunno what you guys are talking about...the FFXIV community is the same as every other MMO I've played.  /shout is full of morons and some helpful players.

The mmo crowd is the mmo crowd, you are not going to get away from them anywhere anymore.  I've seen plenty of idiots on various servers (I have multiple chars spread out because of the queue issues...)

Not to mention some of the completely awful character names I've seen around.   I think you guys might be drinking a little too much of the cool-aid if you think FFXIV has some exceptional community compared to other MMOs..

  • xpsyncxpsync Member EpicPosts: 1,854

The level of courtesy is astounding.

You know when you have a point to drop meat or a box to activate a mini spawn. People wait their turn even though they don't have too. I was at one and 3 peeps come up and waited till i was done, so after i finished i moved away and watched each one take thier turn, and this happens all the time. I imagine it's so not to create a cluster f@ck of mobs and you can enjoy the moment and not be overwhelmed with area effects from other mobs as well.

    Amazing community of players.

Not really i find they are largely ignored and promptly go away as they aren't receiving the attention they feel they deserve like on forums and games like wow.

I agree that so far the majority of the people ive personally seen in chat is kinda helpful (i tend to help a lot too) but i have to ditch this phrase in yellow.

Ive encountered some jerks already. One even made me laugh with its stupidity, claiming that people who play dps classes are lazy people that dont like to take responsabilities in the game by tanking and healing. And blaming us dps users for the slow match making LFG tool....... Most stupid comment ive ever seen since i logged in the first time, completely ignoring the fact that most people play the roles they enjoy, not what pops up faster on duty finder.

No, the game is most certainly online.. just 75% of the playerbase can't actually access the servers.

If you say so....I guess if you want to believe somehow FFXIV only draws the cream of the crop of MMO players then go ahead and think so.  My experience has been the same as everywhere else.  But it sounds to me like just more unfounded hype.

id love to see SE announce that all the people who lost early access (and post launch days) due to overpopulation issues get the free days they announced while all the AFKers get nothing lol. That would be great.

I know, i thought it was a good phrase for a laugh, but when i thought about it more. i thought, that would make one hell of a catchy ad for an mmo.

The community has been for the most part pretty good. I noticed that the game had a solid community on fan sites and during the beta period, so I told a friend he would probably like the game on that basis. A couple hours after telling him about the game, I logged in for the first hours of early access and the first sentence I saw in chat was someone saying 'hello all you cunts,' which made me chuckle as I had given such a rave review of the community. So yeah, I've run into a few bad apples, but for the most part I'm satisfied with the community.

All mmos are like that on release. The bitterness comes later.

How people so often forget. Sounds like the OP went from playing only Wow to his new and shiny mmo. There are other mmos with fewer total subs that had very solid communities all the way until going FTP which typically ruined the existing community.

Don't think FFXIV is a special little flower. You just have the new relationship mindset along with everyone else. The game will become filled with the usual stereotypes in time.

The only thing that makes a community strong is choosing to make it strong which most can't be bothered to do under competition (which will ramp up as the game ages) but it certainly can happen. The universal method to keep a community strong is to keep communities tight and small. Rotating names through cross server instancing kills it.

    You stay sassy!

i'm finding a lot of love in the crafting community right now. people helping each other with mats, people making reagents with one another. each craft is intertwined with one another, so it facilitates a lot of socialization. i have a lot of people on my friends list as my go to people if i would like some ingredients made and i have even joined a crafting linkshell in addition to my normal guild that helps each other with questions regarding crafting.

also, every encounter i have with another crafter starts with a /wave and ends with a /bow. this game has a GREAT community.

Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)
