Re-Assessment of Games to look out for.

CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,414

With the string of new beta's I have re-compiled my list of good mmos.  Also I would like the mention I was wrong about Dark and Light being good.  Seems like the Farlan group hasn't fulfilled the promises they made on features, and the combat is slow and choppy.

What out there right now-

Dungeons and Dragons Online:  This game is kinda fun, the twitch based combat really isnt that twitchy, mainly running in circles and when you see something about to strike you get out of the way; but it allows some things to be done; like climbing on boxes and shooting enemies without the intelligence to climb up after you.  The thief can definetly do more, but it is missing key stealing abilities.  It's an OK game, and if your bored of the current mmo lineup then this game will be suitable to waste time with.

Auto Assault:  Its pretty hard to take complete advantage of the Twisted Metal-Esque theme with the combat setup the way it is.  But it is an ok game, Not terribly boring.  I still stopped playing it though (and I can't remember my account name, so don't bother asking).  I'm sure it would be an okay game when you get used to the combat a bit more.

RF Online:  Its like a mix of DaoC and Lineage 2.  To me that means slow combat and level grinding.  But if your into 3 way faction combat with rewards for winning, then you might like this game.

Settlers of Ganereth:  Removed cause it Blows Chunks.

Games still on the line-up:

Hero's Journey:  Graphics look beautiful, and its being designed by a MUD develepor.  But I really don't know anymore features.  It should be good since they are hiring people for free like mad and offering them paid positions if they do well.  Ingenious system lol.  Anyways, this is definetly a beta I will try.

Age of Conan:  I really don't know about this game too much, but PvP, great graphics, and its based on Conan.  All pluses.

SUN:  If you liked Guild Wars, then you will probably like this game.  It looks to be a Guild Wars clone but offering more, like post level 20.  Webzen is really going out this year and they have a great looking lineup.

Huxley:  I'm sure there is enough press on this game to tell why it is going to be good.

Ragnarok Online 2:  Some of you may not like Ragnarok Online, but this game is definetly looking good, everyone who has played it has been giving optomistic reviews about it.  Like sleeper hit of 2006.  If you haven't seen this game then definetly check it out.  Multiple Complex job systems, Yokko Kanno composing music, Fast paced combat, and beautiful Graphics.

Chronicles of Spellborn:  This game gets better each time I hear about it.  The game seems to be trying to make a fun mmo using European style comic design.  Thats really all I can say about it.  If you haven't seen this game yet check it out, you might find it interesting.

Grenada Espada:  This game has been getting alot of hype from the Asian gamer crowd.  It features multi-player control and Action RPG-esque gameplay set in the 17th century with an fantasy twist.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes:  It has the game feature that got people hyped about Dark and Light, multiple methods of leveling.  That's all I can really say about the game so far.

Pirates of the Burning Sea:  At first I thought this to be a Caribbean Pirate game, but the ship designs are suggesting otherwise with oriental and egyptain ship designs.  The Ship to ship combat while also allowing for 1st person movement ranks this game higher, as well as beautiful graphics.

Thats all I can find right now worth checking out.  Some honorable mentions go to: SEED, WiKi, Tactica Online, and Parfait Station

The rest really seem like clones of one another, empty, or badly made graphics.  But feel free to post them and make fun of me if you want.

Youve got them pretty well covered. The only ones i would add to your list of games to look for would be

1.Tabula Rasa-Looks good graphicaly they are attempting to be different i believe looks to me alot like what SWG couldve been if properly developed.

2.Darkfall-This one seems to be a wild card if it makes it or not but its the only game that could possibly bring back some old UO fun.

What about vanguard? That seems like a decent MMO.

Probably a decent enough MMO yes but it will most likely be another EQ clone. Personaly i have sworn off of level based games i will not play another one.

The fact that Yoko Kanno will be doing the music is enough for me to try this game.

Good list Cleffy, a little biased... but thats ok image.

I myself am very much so looking forward to Spellborn and have started to pay much more attention to it's development, I do hate getting all excited about an upcomming game, but it's hard not too sometimes.

Other then that, RF is one that I can't wait to try, I'm usually not for crazy pvp but this one just looks like to much fun to pass up, although to be honest I feel a bit like I'm being set up for a fall on that one.

I for one am looking forward to Vanguard. If the crafting is as good as they say it is (I come from WoW - crappy crafting and GW - no crafting to speak of), then I am their man.

Dont forget about Roma Victory.  Crappy graphics but realistic gameplay and open style pvp image

Why is Roma Victor always left off the list? It's one of the few Small-Dev Team MMORPGs moving at a fast and strong pace. It appears almost all their initial "features" will be in game and even more. It will even be free, which I don't like, but a lot of others seem to. I have yet to hear a Beta Tester breaking the NDA to put it down like I have heard from Beta Testers in Auto Assault, D&D Online, Dark & Light, and many more.

The combat is extremely unique, it will have the most in-depth crafting system of any MMORPG out there, and it will even have the most unique death system ever created for an MMORPG.

Just read this first post and tell me you are not drooling at the end.

Sure there is a lot of faith involved, especially with the fact it is a small company and that the screenshots released so far are not too pretty(Official Reason is that a lot of the Graphics have been toned down for Testing reasons) , but most the MMORPGs listed to the left are from small companies. As for graphics, it seems that 90% of the MMORPGs that fail to release have really nice looking character models or landscapes but no content at all.

I think the reason why you don't see Roma Victor pop up on alot of these lists is because it's primarily being cattered to a very select and very pre-defined market, hardcore pvp'ers that are bent on a false sense of realism and are willing to shell out real money for in game currency.

None of which is inhenrently bad of course, it's actually quite nice to see a company attempting to do something different and all the power to them but I think at the same time what makes them unique is what drives away alot of potentials. Alot of developers at least "try" to make their game appealing to a variety of gaming styles, it seems to me (just my oppinion please remember) that this development company is very open about who their game will cater too and the heck with anyone else. I know it's what turned me off in the end after researching the game.

But in the end, it's about uniqueness I suppose, so hopefully a good number of people end up in what is hopefully a good game for those that are eagerly waiting for it.

  • LaserwolfLaserwolf Member Posts: 2,383

I don't see Roma Victor as necessarily catering to just Hardcore PvPers. For instance it will be one of the very few MMORPGs out there that allow you to just be a crafter with no fighting skill and still enjoy hours of play-time a day. Games like WoW restrict these types of players.

Roma Victor depresses me.  Basing success on how much real cash a person is willing to spend instead of having a fixed subscription fee and basing success on in-game actions.  But whatever, I guess we'll see how it works out.

Darkfall....I haven't looked at that one for a long time.  Have they made any progress in the last couple of years?

One nobody has mentioned is Trials of Ascension.  It sounds fantastic but it's a long way from release and may be too ambitious to be realistic.

Vanguard is just EQ again but with a heavier focus on raiding.

Conan I haven't really looked at enough to have a solid opinion of but there's something scewy about a mmorpg that is a single player game for the first 20 levels.  Or have they changed that?

Chronicle (or is it The Chronicle?) I also haven't looked closely at but some of what I've read sounded encouraging.  It might be worth looking forward to.

The depressing thing for me is that there aren't any games close to release that I can get really excited about.

I am definately looking forward to Hero's Journey. It may be a bit early to get my hopes up for it and I rather wish I hadn't heard of it just yet because its still a little ways off from being released but everything I've seen about it sounds great!

Fallen Earth- Come on, post apocalypticness with driving and stuff.

Auto Assault- Like Fallen Earth, but being published by NCsoft people have high expectations.

Tatsumaki- Looks interesting. I would expout more, but I'm not going to. Maybe later.

Not true about Vanguard being more focused on raiding.

The devs have said many times that the focus will be on group encounters with raid and solo content. The group content is the focus of Vanguard.

It does sound like it will be patterned after EQ, which is a good thing in my book.

asdar, I know they talk about it being a group oriented game.  And it probably will be from low to mid levels.  But they've made it clear that item progression at high levels will be entirely dependant on raiding.  And crafting worthwhile items will be dependant on raid dropped ingredients and doing things like using a special forge in a raid bosses' lair.

And with their philosophy of interdepndance of the spheres I'm sure that diplomacy will somehow be linked to raiding as well.  Although I'll admit I haven't read anything that specifically indicates that this is true of diplomacy.

This is why I'm sure it will be even more focused on raiding than EQ was.  Because they are planning to have everything linked to how much raiding you do right from the development stage.  EQ didn't start out as a heavily raid oriented game, it gradually evolved into one.  Vanguard is planning to be that way right from the beginning.  And the devs really don't even deny it.  If you read their forums this topic comes up all the time and the devs have never once stepped in to reasure people that the game won't be completely raid oriented at high levels (not that I've ever seen).

They won't come right out and say it either but that's just good business sense.  Annoying to me but I do understand why they want to keep stringing non-raiders along.

  • CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,414

Biased, the only way to write on a forum.

I forgot about Grenada Espada.  That's been getting alot of acclaim with its multi-character control and well done graphics that show alot of panty.  Also Tactica Online pretty much has the same appeal behind it except done in medieval esque graphics.

I don't want to say anything good or bad about Tatsumuki: Land at War because it isn't far enough in its development yet.  It's concept looks good with the game being about doing whatever you want, and it takes place during an interesting period in Japan, but there only seem to be 8 people working on it on the side; so its too early to tell.

Im personally not a fan of ultra-realistic game play (not graphics) like what Roma Victor is trying to offer.  I don't like slow combat and griefing.

I wouldn't mind a Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, or Gundam mmo.  There is SEED, but thats based on anime sci-fi, like Robotech.

I am looking forward to Vanguard for the return of a challenging PvE game (unlike the easy mode PvE games seem to be making now days).

And Warhammer for the next generation RvR style game that makes DAoC still worth playing even with all it's other problems. There is no better PvP out there than the DAoC system.

How the hell would a diplomat do a raid. I can understand andventerers, harvester and to a lesser extent crafters but diplomats? Would it be a protest rally or something?

Um hasn't Vangaurd been shelved whilst they work on Warhammer?

I saw an MMO a while ago in a PCzone, it was with Romans but set in the future, any ideas?
