Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn: Lightning Descends Into Eorzea

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Square Enix is celebrating its games by producing "mash up" videos placing well-known characters into games not usually their home. In one of the more entertaining videos, Lightning, star of Lightning Returns and FFXII, makes an appearance in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Also part of this cross-title collaboration, SQUARE ENIX released new Miqo’te costume screenshots for LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII. Clues for acquiring this costume are hidden within the world of Nova Chrysalia. Players will also be able to acquire weapons and shield themed from the city states of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn (Limsa Lominsa, Ul’dah, Gridania) by clearing side quests.

Great.. So everywhere you look, there will be players that look like Lightning.  Pretty dumb idea to add this to the game.

Its stuff like this that should be relegated to cash shops.

Since when is Tuesday a direction?

Right...I would south rather pay for it then get it free in a game I already pay for. No keep the cash shops outta this game.

Why is it that i bought the game...played 3 weeks and i am done/bored already? Do i suffer from a burn out?

No one game is for everyone, i'm sure you'll find a game you stick to one day, if not, yeah, you're definitely burnt out :)

Yes, because when 11 out of 19 classes are non-combat ones and a massive focus of a game, a game is necessarily generic.

No, you are not the only one.  I got my Dragoon to 42 (42 lancer/ 20 pug/ 25 marauder).  I took my time to smell the roses (I was only 42 after 3 weeks) and honestly its a very polished game.  I suppose it just doesn't appeal to me.  I feel I get the same exp from this game in Rift and SWTOR.  I don't have to pay for those.  So, I can't see myself staying in FF14.  I do recommend people try it out though.  My good buddy absolutely loves it.

So that is all it takes these days? i can pull out one unique feature out of every MMO released in past 5 years. Doesn't make them any less of desperate attempts to copy WOW and cash in its success. FFXIV is as generic as a themepark can get.

I think i have as much right to state my opinion as you. If your 'game is great' comments has no expiry date then i wonder why what i say bothers you so much. The guy asked a question and i simply answered him. You are free to ignore my comments.

You need to realize that when you choose to ignore a major focus of a game, it doesn't mean that part of the game ceases to exist. For a modern MMORPG, the extensive interdependent crafting is new. I mean, would you play GW2 and then pretend that the WvWvW never existed? I mean sure, you may not like it for different reasons, but pretending it doesn't exist is just dishonest.

I love the comments where people post their OPINIONS of a game and state it as fact.  If you find it bland and boring, why are you even reading/posting on a thread about the game?  Are you really that desperate to let everyone know you dislike it?  Thing is your idea of bland is subjective.  what one person finds awesome others do not.  If you're gonna say you dislike it at least stop making it sound like your opinion is fact.

When a major focus of a game is significantely different from the norm, then the game is not generic. You may find other parts of the game to be generic, but the game itself is a sum of all its parts.

There is a difference between just a random unique feature and a major focus.

Only because you said it doesn't mean it is a 'major focus'. The way game has been assembled i doubt even SE know what is the major focus in the game. So i suggest stop making claims without backing it up without any official statements.

All MMOS are sum of its parts, FFXIV isn't something unique. And i haven't heard about one MMO which was success only on basis of one or two unique features.

Why is it such a hard concept that people like different things.

This absolute logic that you define what all humans find enjoyable is not only narcissistic but borderline Troll like behavior. Its a game for christ sake, get over it and over yourself.

Yes its a theme park but a them park about Final Fantasy. I like Final Fantasy, if they made an actually theme park for Final Fantasy like Disney World Im ashamed to admit I  would probably go there once (just once) And yes I would get on the Tifa ride multiple times giggity giggity.

You're joking right?  Every single successful MMORPGS that has ever came out had only a couple of unique features and everything else borrowed from other MMORPGS.  You sir have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

All MMOS bring one or two unique feature to the MMO genre rest is just copy paste of classic themepark features made popular by WOW. When even SE didn't announce what is their major focus in the game i find it surprising that fans are making claims about it.

Exactly.  I've long since given up on games being so wildly unique and over the top.  I know that it's an mmo so there are always going to be a lot of similarities.  That's a given.  When people figure this out they might be able to enjoy games more and quit having unrealistic expectations.  I love FFXIV for the world, there are some unique features mixed in with the traditional mmo style of play.  I love TSW even though it's not all that 'unique' either but it's a game world I find intriguing.  Heck GW2 is not all that it's hyped up to be but I enjoyed that one for a time..

Also to the comment that it's a wow clone -  I'm so sick of this comment.  Wow is far from the golden chalice and everything that wow is/has was created before it, it just got to be the biggest one.

McDonalds is a success, yet do I ever go eat there? No, I prefer better cuisine. While other people may care about how successful games are economically, I could not care less; what matters to me is the game itself.

As for the term "major focus", an entity does not need to have only one major focus; it can very well have multiple. A good example is GW2 which had at least following major foci: WvWvW and Structured PvP.

There is also a difference between what is a major focus for further development and what is a major focus currently in the game.

Just like one can point out that WvWvW and Structured PvP were two major focuses in GW2 by just paying attention to how the game is, one can point out that crafting is one of the major foci in FFXIV. The way class quests are designed, the way retainers are dessigned, the way drop tables are designed, the way interdependecy of crafting is designed, the way leves are designed, the way melding is designed, the way the class system is designed, etc. all points towards that conclusion.

Calm down people. Everyone is free to state their opinion. I for one didn't really like FFXIV. I'm pretty sure I'm burned out with themeparks though and FFXIV feels so much like many other themeparks out there that I couldn't get into it. One thing I'll give it, FFXIV is very polished. If you're not burned out on themeparks you'd probably like it.

Cool crossover concept. But you failed to mention that guys get a outfit based on Snow and gals get a Lightning based outfit for finishing this FFXIII based FATE.

I think it's okay to implement things like this into a series. I realized square does this quite often though, recently I started to play their card game on IOS and Android called Guardian Cross and they had an event where you could earn cards from FFXIV and FFXI. It's kind of cool to see cross game events like this, but I can see why people would be mad about a bunch of people looking like Lightning from the Final Fantasy universe.

They might have been able to do this in a way that made it so that it wasn't so blatantly obvious they are trying to market the other games in the series, but at the same time it's their series, if they want to implement something like this just to try it out for an event, I can't see what the harm would be the first time. If players hate it and voice that opinion then I'm sure they will change it so they don't do it again, they already remade the entire game because players voiced their opinions on it so obviously they listen.
