The WildStar team is ready to reveal new information about the game. One of the most important topics to most players is how combat will play out. The team has put together a new DevSpeak video to discuss combat and we have an analysis of what is revealed. Check out our thoughts, watch the video and then head to the comments to thrash it out with others.
WildStar is one of those upcoming MMOs slowly pulling back the layers (like an onion, right?) on their design and overall goals as the game marches ever nearer to its 2014 release. With the release of today’s latest DevSpeak, developer Carbine Studios gives us even more information on the game’s most essential component: combat. We’ve talked about movement, about telegraphs, and we have a pretty good feel for the basics. But how about how you’ll actually pull off a class’ abilities? WildStar’s action won’t be just pressing a hotbar and watching your character’s animations. Instead, the team has opted for a much more active interface that involves several different types of abilities, each requiring different degrees of interaction and input from the player. Watch the Abilities DevSpeak video below, and read up on how you’ll be playing WildStar more actively than most other MMOs. Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments!

PR Spin, GW2 said the same thing because you have to "dodge" red shapes on the ground.
Are they even trying to spin something believeable this time around?
Yawn
He may be negative but he isn't wrong. I was so looking forward to this game until I got to try it. It's not the best of tera,gw2 combat. Both of them had much more involved and "immersive" combat. You don't have to watch for subtle moves for signs of incoming attacks. There's no animation that lets you know you need to dodge.....This really was just get out of the red and put them in the blue.
This type of combat will annoy ppl wanting tab target and disappoint ppl who want action. It's the end result of trying to appeal to both types of players.
around this time last year i was as excited for a game called GW2.
showcasing all their upcoming features- Iam hoping this has a stronger personal Lore than GW2 has given us.
even though its an mmo and a social game- it is hard to get everyone together on the same page in social game- so lets hope there is plenty to do as a solo player- like TSW has.
over all looks like it had alot of cool potential!
Keep seeing people moaning about telegraphs but I cant think of a MMO i've played in last few years that hasn't had telegraphs in some shape or form.
Plus you can turn them off already announced.
For me personally, combat in any way, shape, or form, is becoming the least interesting thing about MMO's. Sure you can put a little spin on it here, a little pizazz on it there. But at the end of the day, it is the most repetitive thing that you will do in probably 99% of all the games out there. And if I am going to be doing something repeatedly for hours, then dodgy and actiony is not really what I am looking for. I think single player games are better for that. Like I used to play Street Fighter 2, which is what all this flashy and jumpy exaggerated animation combat reminds me of. Fun but only for so long and then you put it down.
Just wish newer MMO's would find other areas of game mechanics to focus on besides just combat. So yea nothing that really excites me here but it might excite the younger crowd that has the "skillz" for this.
And yea the graphics are not really my thing either. Prefer a little more realism to my fantasy.
Could be a great game though, waiting to hear what people who play it say.
FFA Nonconsentual Full Loot PvP ...You know you want it!!
The gaming guild I play with wants to make this a part of our "regular lineup" of games we play together. So, I have tried to follow all aspects of the game. I have tried to like what I see. Unfortunately, I just do not like the art style, the cartoonish combat animations nor the character selections. This article really does nothing to boost my confidence or lessen my distaste for this game.
Note that this is MY opinion and may or may not be shared by many if any others.
Let's party like it is 1863!
absolutely right.
if your into 'game of thrones' theme =Dragons n Knights...which iam not.
those games will be released abt next yers.
this game is def. up my alley FireFall- LoL- Futurama!...cant wait! itll be a blast!
to each its own- theres room for all!
I cant either man, maybe when i was 13 i would consider it. The gameplay might in fact be good but this looks like a disney game for kids.
Hype Train!
This game looks awesome, can not wait to play a lot in my free time!
I just hope the game is on par with my expectations =z
I believe you have to buy a retail copy and there is a subscription.
I'm not dissing the graphics, but it is an aspect of the game I don't like. It's too cartoony, which is one of the reasons I didn't like wow. There are people that don't mind the animation so they should enjoy the game. I'll probably give it a go just to check it out.
Where it will fail or succeed is on the "bosses". Small mobs can be fun to fight no matter the mechanic because the effort -> reward cycle is short.
But doing the same stuff over and over again for a half hour with amob with near infinite health?
GW2 recently upped some of the bosses, Maw used to be a very fast mob, now it takes 5 minutes or more of just plain DPS. Nothing intresting, just hack and slash away. You can dodge but who can be bothered doing that for 5 minutes straight? I can't. Just let it run on auto attack and make a snack.
I read that Wildstar will have some attacks that require you to hit a button really fast and the more often you hit your keyboard, the more you hit in the game.
Ooooh EXCITING! I played those games decades ago where the faster you hit two buttons, the faster you sprinted. These games died out (except on consoles but consoles are for droolers anyway) for a reason.
And you can bet with in 2 seconds of launch, someone will macro the shit out of it.
MMO's are not action games. Action games you play for 8 hours and then they are finished, MMO's got to last 8 years to be counted as a success.
Someone said it was free if so Ill get it not for me but my 6 year old.... im not trying to diss it but I think my 6 year old will like this, and my 3 year old loves to watch em play games. Ofcourse if you think our generation has a short time with games good luck with the new one devs.
I think they play a game for 3-4 days and thats it which is why I wouldnt buy this game for em. Except mario lets just say there room is done in mario, And I thought i was good at games but holy 5h1t . My 3 year-old can play super mario 2 for the 3ds except some of bowsers kids hell ask me to do it. But he can play the hell out of Mario.
Again not trying to diss the game with this post (If you check my past post you know im not a fan of WS) but watching videos of this reminds me of my kids 3ds games. Being serious with this.
If you would have read the article or watched the youtube vid, you would know that the combat is different, and it looks like it would offer more tactical options and more interactivety than any other MMO at the moment.
Ok.. i will not call it a revolution. But it at least sounds interesting. And could be more involving and more interesting.. but it remains to be seen until we have a chance to play and test it.
Most MMOs lack extremely, when it comes down to combat. And up to now neither ESO nor EQN made the impression that they would improve the well known combat systems very much.
With other words i am at least interested to give it a try, to see the combat system, especially in pvp situations. Because i despise old fashion mmo combat, and maybe that one is at least a little bit better.. although a few new twists don't make a great combat system, and as much as i have seen it is not a lot more.. but better than nothing.
And about GW2 and Tera. GW2 is old school Tab targeting combat with moving and a immunity skill(dodge role).. that's not really a different feeling than any other old school MMO. And Tera with the animation lock isn't the best either. I do like combat systems like War of the Roses, although some more tactical options would be preferable. Up to now no "melee&magic" combat system is that great, and i do feel that you could improve extremely in that part.
