GW2 recently upped some of the bosses, Maw used to be a very fast mob, now it takes 5 minutes or more of just plain DPS. Nothing intresting, just hack and slash away. You can dodge but who can be bothered doing that for 5 minutes straight? I can't. Just let it run on auto attack and make a snack.

I read that Wildstar will have some attacks that require you to hit a button really fast and the more often you hit your keyboard, the more you hit in the game.

Ooooh EXCITING! I played those games decades ago where the faster you hit two buttons, the faster you sprinted. These games died out (except on consoles but consoles are for droolers anyway) for a reason.

And you can bet with in 2 seconds of launch, someone will macro the shit out of it.

MMO's are not action games. Action games you play for 8 hours and then they are finished, MMO's got to last 8 years to be counted as a success.

Yea I pretty much agree completely with this.   Who really cares what kind of tweak actions they apply to the combat controls when all you are doing is fighting the same mindless repetitive mobs over and over again!

If they want innovative combat they need to up the ante on the mob AI.   You could have one button to mash but if you have an intelligent and engaging enemy who challenges you to defeat him, you will be enjoying yourself much more, regardless of the combat techniques used.

A sadly ignored feature in most MMO's it seems.

Damn, those are some craptastic animations. Clunky at best but I hope they're responsive at least. That aside, their combat doesn't seem at all the best of GW2 or TERA. I enjoyed TERA's combat a lot more than moving out of red painted areas like a lot of so called "action" combat mmos. At least in TERA you had to pay attention to the hints and animations the monsters gave off instead of this hand holding crap with red areas and even then after you figured out the animations/hints you just had to be responsive.

This "new" spin on channeling, rapid fire, and charges on skills is a nice spin don't get me wrong....just the rest of the whole combat mechanics just seems boring or will be just a bother after a while.

I dont know, but why is that as TESO, WIldstar, and EQN comes closer to launch and release more information and mechanics on their games...the more disappointed I am in the next batch of next gen mmorpgs? Am I the only one thinking developers are just half assing things or trying to hit such a broad casual every Joe schmoe gamer that they're forgetting the real market? *shrugs* Oh well, guess I won't be buying or subbing to these, sad.

    You reap what you sow.

If you want really really good combat then try Firefall. That's all I have to say about this.

Ya I agree its just more marketing spin.

Still holding out for WoD. Hope they can pull off another deep complex mmo.

Outstanding video and I can't wait to play. Well done!

If in 1982 we played with the current mentality, we would have burned down all the pac man games since the red ghost was clearly OP. Instead we just got better at the game.

    And.... it's in my watchlist.
  • YalexyYalexy Member UncommonPosts: 1,058

Isn't basically all combat repetitive and boring after a while? Playing Battlefield or CoD, etc just gets as boring combatwise and you only continue playing because of your friends or becasue you want to climb the ladder in the leaderboard.

And for the macros.... grab a Logitech G13/15 and a Cyborg MMO7/Razer Naga etc and you have your macros easiy available, without anyne able to accuse you of cheating. Using specialized hardware isn't cheating in my books.

Anyways, I think that the shown combat isn't that bad. It's a nice way to circumvent tab-targeting without making it a FPS-game. And the indicators of the attacks on the ground actually let you react to and dodge attacks, which makes it very interesting for tanks in the end-game.
I liked these indicators and the dodging in TSW very much.

The graphics are comic-style, because carbine tells the stories in the game like comics aswell, just like Borderlands does it, so the graphics perfectly match the game actually.
In addition you can reach far more players this way, if you don't try to do realistic graphics only people with $300+ GPUs can play and enjoy.

Overall I'm interested in this game for it's approach to end-game content and a heavy focus on raiding, especially big group raiding.

Everyone in the world said the same crap about WoW when it came out.... "The graphics are too cartoony"  But they still played it. This game is original in a lot of ways, and takes a lot of things that have been successful in other MMO's and tweaks them slightly, but doesn't break the system trying to be TOO orginial.

For everyone comparing it to FAILfall, you might as well stop. The graphics in firefall are far worse than any other MMO out there, and twice as cartoony/anime-ish as this. (Not to mention their fail dev asses plugged their game on here through Mark til they were blue in the face, and then screwed up the game so bad that they had to remove PVP. Joke status game.)

This game will be a welcome addition to the MMO circuit considering there isn't a single MMO out right now that isn't Free to Play crap with a cheap budget trying to rip of dedicated gamers for an easy buck to move onto their next title, or recycled ideas for franchises and franchise rip-offs where the parent franchise sold out for a dollar. (D&D)  (And I would say a huge concern after playing it, is that ESO will follow in the same footsteps as this allowing someone other than Bethesda to produce the product.)

Wild Star should be on the top of the "to play" list for any good MMO players. If you are playing ANY game for the flash graphics then you are wrong. Take a look at any of the last 4 Final Fantasy titles to come out and you can see the formula for easy cash and no effort on character development and goofy unrealistic, unimportant storyline. Even ESO, after playing it left me some serious doubts.  EQN looks promising with the interactive environment, but ultimately, in ANY RPG, MMO or otherwise, it comes down to the developers and writers abilities to connect the player to not just his character and the flashy combat; but to build the emotional connection to the environment, the NPC's and the world. In any RPG as a player you feel a need to help, destroy, conquer or build friendships and enemies; And not  just to other players but with the world around you. With all that has been presented, I would say that what truly remains to be seen is how the world interacts with the player. Not the other way around.

Dissing something or comparing to WoW is so 2005, funny how you haven't noticed that.

Back on topic, i wish the combat wasn't telegraph, i prefer tiny "tells" lot more.

I agree with whoever said this is the best animation in an MMO.  It's pretty amazing.  The graphics are definitely a preference, but there's no real argument that the animations aren't smooth.  As for the combat, I don't see a problem with it.  It's leaning a little more towards 3rd person action games than I'd like, but if they add this system to current MMO standards, it could work out very well (for me anyway).  I gotta agree with most people on the colored markers though, I don't care for them.

You're so blindly positive on every article. I guess it's time to ignore you.  See what I did there?  I hope you see why trying to silence a dissenting opinion is bad.

How exactly is ignoring DMKano's posts silencing him?

This..right here, is the only MMO I am looking forward to play.

DO not disappoint me Carbine. I don't believe in EQN "fiasco" , but I do believe in you!

You are so negative on every article.  Guess its time to ignore you.

He may be negative but he isn't wrong. I was so looking forward to this game until I got to try it. It's not the best of tera,gw2 combat. Both of them had much more involved and "immersive" combat. You don't have to watch for subtle moves for signs of incoming attacks. There's no animation that lets you know you need to dodge.....This really was just get out of the red and put them in the blue.

This type of combat will annoy ppl wanting tab target and disappoint ppl who want action. It's the end result of trying to appeal to both types of players.

    Agree 100%

hm, guess the woldstar devs missed GW2 and TSW, eh?

"believe me, mike.. i calculated the odds of this working against the odds that i was doing something incredibly stupid… and i did it anyway!"

I have no idea what you two are going on about. Even in the video, you can see the mobs going on about an animation before they attack. Only thing is the delay before the short animation starts. Isn't this better than a 2 second long slow motion jump. While everyone is acting normally, in so many games the mobs tend to break the space-time continuum and enter a long duration jump or swing of the arm which i am guessing is the kind of attack animation you want. I would prefer it the way it is in Wildstar where the attacks are fast rather than a long animation attack.

"Carbines combat makes you act and react"

If community responses are any indication of how folks truly feel about this than Carbine's combat makes you yawn and ask what is really new for me here?

As a side note I was truly excited about wildstar at first but I've noticed that subsequent PR releases have only been highlighting things that seem to be downplayed norms in already released Mmo's.

    Like the following:

gw2 - telegraphs. I'm sure other games too but Wildstar is very pointedly HIGHLIGHTING this as a draw feature. It's just a gameplay mechanic not a draw for gamers imho.
