I say be whatever you want to be... my goal is to level up in everything to keep the game fresh. I was thinking male/taru/white mage-bard. When I'm not in a party, I'll just level up other jobs for fun. Although a Red Mage Taru in Red Mage garb looks sooooo damned cute! *petpetpetpetpetpetpet
Both sigs look fine.

im plannin on being a ninja/samurai.not sure how well the 2 go together but those 2 just sound the coolest to me and thats what i want to be regardless
I plan to get it and give it a try but I have never been a big fan of Final Fantasy so dont really understand the class structures and such. I was thinking to be a Hume red mage cause that sounded fun.
Do you have to have a second class? Does it make you alot weaker if your just one class?
Really depends. I for one would never want to play a mmorpg w/ the FF tern taking battle style. I would hate that. but if the game had tons of cotent, items, armors, weapons, classes, races, ect ect ect and pretty much everything i love about a mmorpg, then i might give it some thought.
Well thats kinda what I was asking. Are there drawbacks to having a second job? Like maybe you arent as good at your primary job as someone who only played one job?
Would Thief/Samuri or Thief/Ninja be combos that work well?
I recommend searching the FFXI forums for clarification to how the job system works in case you have any questions, for some reason I had trouble fully comprehending it =P. In most cases any job combo works except for things like Black Wiz/Warrior, they wanted to avoid tank mages I think. Somethings don't go to well either, like Dragoon as a secondary job (can't use dragon), Ninja (Can't dual wield), and summoner (can't summon very well). Other then that you can be virtually anything Bard/Thief, Warrior/Monk, Dragoon/Samuri, Ranger/Monk, etc.
Oh, and if you don't mind me asking, what your portrait from? It looks vaguely familiar.

Ok, Misti, I've seen you ask this question more than once in different forms but never got a straight answer. So answer is:
NO- there are no drawbacks to having a sub job when compared to someone who only has one job.
If one person has Ninja as primary and Thief subbed.... they will have an extreme advantage over someone who simply has Ninja as a primary and no sub (if that's even possible). This is because having a sub job gives you added abilitys of said subjob (thief) while still having just as strong a primary job (Ninja). Consider the 2 mentioned people are equal in Ninja- but due to the fact one has a sub, he can also use those skills.
From what I've heard Theif/Samurai would be an awesome combo. Due to samurai's TP meter able to stay filled for some time combined with the Theif's strong offensive attacks.

Thanks Desp, I think I will probably get the strategy guide so I dont clog the forums with more questions hehe. The whole thing still confuses me a bit though. I would think if you are spending time leveling a secondary job that you would no longer be leveling your primary job kinda like multi classing in other games.
So would it take the same time to be a level 50 Thief as it would to make a level 30 Thief/level 20 Ninja and would you be capable of fighting the same thing the level 50 character could?
Aaaaah ok, I think I've finally seen the light. You're wanting to know if the xp you earn getts cut in 2 and dispersed to your primary and sub job instead of all getting put on your primary (essentially leveling you faster)- hope I got that right.
This is a very good question. Unfortunately I'm not sure about that right now. I'll be in a FFXI meeting this weekend (how nerd-ish does that sound?), and I'll be sure to bring this up and let ya know.
