EverQuest Next: Break It, Take It, Make It Dev Diary Arrives

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Terry Michaels and Jeff Butler host the first EverQuest Next: Landmark developer diary called "Break It, Take It, Make It". In it, the pair discuss how players can find and collect materials and use those resources to create items. Check it out to learn more about how "crafting" will work in EverQuest Next: Landmark.

I am way too confused over what Everquest Next is, and what landmark is. It seems now they're taking two gameplay elements and seperating them into to seperate games, rather than mixing them in a nice fun way. That being adventuring, and crafting.

You're definitely not the only one.

I do like this dev diary format. At least it's not deceitful like that round table puppet show.

EverQuest Next Landmark is being released around Christmas time.  It'll allow players to play with the tools they use to created the environments in EverQuest Next.  By doing so, they are allowing the players to work their creative magic.  If something is deemed good enough for the game, they'll approach the player and ensure that they receive the credit for said work.

EverQuest Next is the MMO that's coming sometime (apparently) in 2014.

I could care less what it looks like if they can pull off most if not all of the systems they are saying they are going to have. I mean common, most MMOs out there that are worth playing don't have the best graphics. If I want a pretty game I will go play a single player RPG or Adventure game but that is not what I am here for and I am also not here for massively single player games either, which is what a lot of games have turned into including WOW.

Yep, anyone who cares about the graphics of an MMORPG is missing the point completely. Gameplay always trumps graphics. If they can make this work it is the best MMORPG ever made easily. Pretty unlikely they make it work the way they suggest though, but graphics isn't going to be the downfall. Only being partially successful in 'the vision' will be the downfall.

Not sure what is to understand between the two mods though? One is like allowing the players to develop their own content and play in sort of a minecraft style game. The other is an MMO that can draw from the minecraft style game. So I can build an orc fortress in the Landmark game and if they like what they see they can put that fortress into the real game and allow orcs to build it.

They just described Minecraft right down to vaults being ender chests. In fact there are multiplayer servers where people get plots and do the same thing they just talked about. The only way they could have sounded more like minecraft is by saying you needed to punch trees, make a wooden pickaxe, then a stone pickaxe, then mine iron to make an iron pick axe to mine diamonds.

I just pictured Minecraft creative mode with a price tag for every block you place. Would not surprise me coming from SOE and their no downside to F2P line of thinking.

Well they said you can craft it yourself..but I hope lots.  Might as well have the lazy pay for my game.

Go play EQ for an hour...Then go play EQ2 for an hour....Then go play Vanguard for an hour......After you've played those 3 and see how crappy everything works and how many things are broken, then think again what EQN will be like.....This game will have more problems than most celebrities in the tabloids.

Personally, my confusion sets in when I hear things like "exploration" and "combat" when used for Landmark. It seems like it's more then just a building tool. But I guess by releasing Landmark first, they can start the money rolling in and keep EQN interest steady while they continue to develop the core model.

In three years, we'll probably be posting in a thread about how SOE has "decided" to combine the two tools into one.

Well, if you play Vanguard last, sure, you're going to be left with the feeling that a lot of stuff is broken. I played EQ and EQ2 for a long time, and I never felt like either had a ton of problems. I mean, there were some small problems from time to time, but nothing worse than I've experienced in a ton of other MMOs, and better than most.

I actually like Vanguard (or the overall concept) quite a bit, I just can't argue with things not working quite as they would have liked. I played in the closed beta for that game, and it had the potential to be my favorite of all time. They just screwed it up. A lot.

I'm just waiting for a F2P overhyped sandbox WoW clone with full PVP, epic raid bosses, instanced group content, and Crysis-quality graphics to come out. That, or something fun.

Vanguard uses an unoptimised Unreal Engine 2.x that was never meant to be used for MMOs.

EverQuest and EverQuest 2 uses SOE's old engine + Tools that are outdated due to being heavily CPU dependent and not optimized for todays GPUs.

EverQuest Next uses a completely New engine.

So when did celebs not get brought up in tabloids much?  I played EQ forever and it seemed to work pretty good, and I played VG even at launch with a top of the line computer, and besides the hitching from high polygon count and stuff not optimized, I rarely had any problems even then (also they did not code this game, they fixed a lot of problems people had).

Thanks for the words of encouragement!

To my knowledge, they use the same skills, mobs, characters, etc, but EQN is closer to the previous EQ games and EQN:L is closer to minecraft.

Since when is Tuesday a direction?

I have my little mental markers, and I think I just made one for EQN. If the resource locations are always static (I.E. static nodes), then the game is going to suck. If the resource locations - and hopefully the resource quality too - are dynamic, EQN will be a MMORPG to play.

These markers often seem to work out well for me as a broad indicator. I remember I had one for Obama. It was that if he got the presidential dog from a shelter, we might be in for a truly great president. But that if he went to a designer puppy mill, just like everyone else, that we would only get the status quo.

In regards to the topic at hand. It sounds good and all but I'm really interested to see/hear when they're going to actually show us the game rather than talk about it. In due time, yes I know. I guess I am a bit impatient. :)

I want to see a video detailing how we go about gathering resources, converting them into building materials and then seeing a structure built out of those resources. Until I see that process from beginning to end, I'm going to be pessimistic. Modifying terrain is cool n all but most people are going into landmark to build structures, not move dirt around.
