My first was phantasy star online for the dreamcast, really enjoyed that alot but now I woud be bored to tears playing it. When I moved to the pc, played ragnarok online alpha-end of beta (again bored to tears). My favorite (and i have played them all ) would be star wars galaxies pre cu when I had my jedi.
No. My first was Ultima Online, and even though I still think of it as one of my favorites, I went onto Everquest which I like better. Now I play Everquest II which is my favorite. The original Star Wars Galaxies is also up there on my list.
i think that the first mmo you play youll always have a thing for.... like your first kiss or anything like that... youlll remember it as a good thing and thats basically it
NICE new, and original topic you created! I agree with you that there is something to whatever first mmorpg one plays, that makes one forever attached to it. Making it automatically their most favorite one.
My first mmorpg was Runescape. I did not even know what a mmorpg was back then. An online friend from another game recommended it to me and I ended up addicted for months. RS was a whole new experience like nothing I could imagine. I still re-visit it every few months. It remained my favorite only because it was the only one I had played.... until I tried AsheronsCall. That was my first 'real' mmorpg. With 'real graphics'. With each new mmorpg I played, the new one would become my favorite. The first 5 months of release for Star Wars Galaxies still remains the height of my best ever experiences in a mmorpg ever. Every single thing was nice - players, game play, guilds, game features, char creation, char customization, 30+ professions to choose, it was like being in a toy store with too many choices, and 1 hundred grand in your pocket. Unfortunatly, SWG went downhill by its 1 year of release when the Jedi Hologrind mess forever chased away the majority of loooongtime fans, loooong time players, loooong time quality community.
Right now I have played just about every single major mmorpg. I am very sure if EQ, or some other mmorpg, had been my very first one, that would be my most favorite of all based on pure sentimental feelings.
I would say for me right now.... based on pure sentimental feelings..... RS is a 3 way tie with AstoniaIII, and StriveForPower, for second place. And in first place a two way tie between Anarchy Online and Asherons Call, when it comes to my most favorite mmorpgs .... based on pure personal favortism... based on pure sentimental feelings.
Originally posted by 7Fold UO from 97-99 My first and favorite. Currently playing wow a tad, although loggin in less and less. And just picked up guild wars, pretty cool so far. But Old UO was my favorite. Still cant find a game that matches the total freedom of old UO. Weird in all these new games they wont let you own and decorate up a house. I figured that would be standard after UO.
Check out the unofficial UO2.......... Star Wars Galaxies. If you are first intrested in owning and decorating your own house. SWG (created by the same lead game DEV who made UO) took housing in UO to the next level, and beyond. You can get a small house, house, mansion, have balconies.. have basements, and even go onto the roof. And decorate. Even plan the floor and room layouts.
I guess my first MMO was DragonRealms (text-based) and I have some of the best memories from it. I might even still play it but it's $15 a month for a MUD.. so whatever. :P
Graphical MMOs, my first was The Realm and I HATED IT. Wow, it was terrible. Even for a crappy 1997ish game.
Anarchy Online was my 3rd MMO and I adored it. In fact... I still play it once in a while since it's free and all. It's not the best game graphically or systems-wise, but it's not terrible. I prefer other MMOs today but between MMOs I usually pop back in for a few days.
My first was Everquest 1 and I stuck with it for nearly four years. It was pretty fun though it could get boring during raids at the high levels. Like waiting 30 minutes just for your guildmates to all show up for a raid. One of the main reasons I think I stuck with it so long is because I had three or four RL friends who played also and we were in the same guild and would lan together a lot. I have a lot of fond memories of EQ though so I guess it's my favorite.
Since EQ1 I've played just about every mmo thats come out and I havnt been able to stick with any of them for more than five or six months if that. I'm starting to think that getting a good group of friends in whatever game I play is a must or I will grow tired of it. Maybe I should start grouping more....or maybe I have ADD.
Originally posted by Nihilanth my first MMO was FFXI, and I'll say this: I had more FUN on that game than I've had on any MMO previously, but no it isn't my favorite. the main reason I think I had so much fun was because absolutely everything was so new to me. i tried going back recently and couldn't stand it though, so my newest love is WoW.
How is it humanly possible to have fun with FFXI?
WoW is fun...but it's so shallow. Not much to offer craftwise...PvP is repetitive and boring - classes have like no variety in spells and styles..everyone is usually specced the same. And my biggest gripe of all...EVERYONE LOOKS THE SAME! End game isn't really a big problem with this one guys so stop saying it is...theres so many useless forms of crafting you could take up...or how about doing the same instance over and over again to get a drop that some stupid @Zz hunter rolls and wins on...maybe some pointless raid on the Alliance that you'll end up losing? Sounds like fun to me.
My first mmo Runescape...then UO which I bought when I was 8..but I didn't undertsnad it and quit. My second mmorpg was DAoC until I left because I played it too long, then I went to FFXI...horribleh....then CoH...no difference in character abilities and boring baddies, then I went to WoW..had loads of fun the first month...then by month 2 I got to level 60 with my Troll Warrior and asked myself..what have I done for the past 2 months? After that I went to Battlefield 2 for a while just to mess around until a new game came out..after doing research I realized NO cool looking game are actually coming out until next year. I'm playing DAoC right now because I love PvP the most in MMOs, which has been my favorite so far.
**My first online game was Diablo 2, which my uncle bought me when I was 8 also..I still play it but I don't know if it qualifies as a MMO.
It was Anarchy-Online. Shadowlands expansion turned it too much toward fantasy - so I left (I don't like from scifi-fantasy mess). Hopefully they will upgrade character models and graphics someday.

My first MMO was EVE-Online..... since then, i have never stop play this game : it's fun ! And the first game we play is often the game we want to play first, isn't it ?
My first MMORPG was SWG (I was on the 14 day trial) and I loved it, but I lagged up alot in the cities. It really amazed me. I haven't went back to it since then. I hear it's changed alot and I don't know if it's worth my time going back.
When I started playing Anarchy Online, I found out SWG took a lot of elements from it. AO happens to be the best mmorpg I've played.
nexus: kingdom of the winds was my first mmorpg....i d/l'ed it from downloads.com and it changed my life.....well, it brought me into the mmorpg scene and that brought me into beta testing scene and that brought me to my kinda career in QA....
the gameplay was deep, when you turn 99 all experience after that you sell and use the points for either mana or health....great community for rp'ers- they had player run classes.....shitty graphics, but they were really fun^^
i learned alot from that game.
at the time i didnt like uo(got killed 5min into game after patching((also i couldnt use the phone line for long periods of time back in the 90's))) and i thot eq's graphics sucked!!! i'd rather have cool lookin sprites than fucked up poly people.
Although I know it was far from the best MMO ever and by todays standards pretty basic but in my heart it's still my favorite MMO bare none. I have amazing memories of late night gaming sessions and meeting so many amazing people from all over the globe that would become fast friends that would actually play together, stick together, have huge adventures together, what that may be. Solo quests ? Who need that, we were online and playing together, why would we want solo quests ?
We didn't need amazing graphics, had no want for 1 BILLION quests, no one cared about a feature list that was miles long, so long as we were together and we were having fun, thats all that mattered. To this day, that's why I had so much fun, the people and thats why I look back now and say easily that it was my favorite game.
My first MMO was Ultima Online back in 1997; I loved the franchise and played all the Ultima RPGs starting on a C-64 way back in the day. I loved the promise of gaming with thousands of other people in Lord Brit's world.
While the game changed a lot over the years and was little like the series when it came to game play due to player vs player conflict I have to say I loved the game more than anything else I have played.. and I have played them all.
All of them.
WoW has done a lot right, and other games have added to the genre but UO was the one that really set the tone, people bad mouth it because they do not know it. People who never played it back them just do not and will not ever see the appeal. It is now NOTHING like it was, and it has in many ways been ruined.
Lord Brit was fired.. what do you expect?
Many times people change a game and expand it based on what they think are a good idea, but after a game launches any change to it can be devastatingly bad.
In short though.. Yes. My first is my favorite.
I am looking for a game that is a cross between late 90's UO and WoW, and when it hits the shelves I will be a happy gamer.
My first MMO was PSO on Dreamcast in September of 2000. I played 200 Hours in a game on one character for the first time ever. I noticed that the number of games I bought per month took a big dip, I went several months without buying a new game. I noticed the value of such a game. I played PSO 1 and 2 till they stopped the online support for Dreamcast. Then I had no Highspeed internet nor a computer to enjoy anything else out there. The I got my first real and good paying job and I started looking, First I got back online with PSO on XBox Live, I found that it had not aged too well, the game was identical to the Dreamcast experience and it just didnt do it for me anymore. SO I started looking, then I saw City of Heroes...I bought a PC just for that game, trouble was I hadnt had a comp since back in the day, I'm talking Ultima Underground, Wing Commander 2 and Dune 2 here. SO I got COH and played a character ( The Amazing Womanizer) I played for maybe 20 hours total. I could not, for the life of me understand the death penalty of losing experience. I hated it. It sucked badly and I view it even now as an artificial way to make a long tedious levelling process a longer and more tedious endeavor. Basically my goal was to fly at full speed once I reached that point at level 15 ...WOOT. The came exciting news of an MMO with no experience loss on death, the moment I heard this and saw the demo video for World of Warcraft I preordered right on the spot. I have been playing that for a year now and find myself bored to tears by it now, I was ready for the expansion since June, and to think it will be nearly another year before the expansion. So I have decided to find another game, and I was having trouble....till I found this site, I find this site to be a great resource for finding a new home for my many hours of free time, lol. I am thinking Anarchy Online, for free sounds good for a while, I will cancell WOW till the expansion comes out and play as many free mmo as possible till then. Perhaps even Guild Wars.
Wow... my first MMO. I guess it depends on everyone's definition of MMO. Since someone brought up Diablo II, I am guessing people are using a loose definition. Diablo II wouldn't be considered a MMO by any recent standards.
I started with games like Air Warrior and Mega Wars, Dark Sun Online and Neverwinter Nights Online (the online game WAY before the one most of you know today), as well as many MUDs and BBS games like Red Dragon Inn, Pyroto Mountain and Star Trek Online. All of these are multiplayer and online. Yes, I am old school. Getting to the more "current" MMO games, I played The Realm, Meridian 59, UO, EQ, AC, DAoC, etc...
For memory, the first 'goose bump' memory I have of an online game, massive or not, was Air Warrior. One of my first missions was in a bomber. I looked to my right and to my left to see squads of fighters. The moment I realized those fighters were real people, and graphically represented, I was in love with online and in turn MMO games. I am not sure Air Warrior would be my favorite to play today, but that memory is one of my favorites to remember.
Anyway, I answered no... I really don't have a favorite. I jump between a *lot* of MMO games every other month.
I lost my MMO virginity to WoW and to be honest, I wish I would've waited for the right one instead of just being a slut.
WoW as a game was cool, but the community was just too full of kids and those that acted like kids. MxO had people that assumed you were a kid just for disagreeing, even if you disagreed in an adult manner. They had a very exclusive attitude instead of an inclusive one, and their subscription rates show it. CoV had many anti-PvP forum trolls. Guild Wars was the only one that had a great community that achieved The Balance. Adult enough not to be asses, but child-like enough to embrace fun. Good peeps over there.
If I had more time and less MMO burnout, I'd still be playing Guild Wars. I plan to buy the sequel out of respect alone.
EQ1 was my first MMORPG and had to be my favorite simply because I had never played anything like it. Dont think I could stand to play it now though. In fact I have unfortunatly been unable to find a MMO or MMORPG that I can play for more than a few months. I played MUDs (primarily GSIV) for several years before EQ1 and still love them.

Please tell me you're joking, Guild Wars, has the freakin' worst communtiny in any MMO I've ever seen apart from Runescape. l337 kiddies, retards who can't spell, people who think they are better than everyone else, but can't spell, and retards who set up guilds with stupid names.

My first MMORPG was Neverwinter Nights that was on America Online and to this day, it has to be my favorite of all time. That and Ultima Online were both the best of the best.
The PVP in NWN on AOL was incredible. It was turn based and gave you time to think out your strategies against other players. You could get ganked, you could fight someone 1 on 1..it was fantastic and I miss it. AOL closed it down about 8-10 years ago I believe.
Ultima Online has to be my second choice as far as the best MMORPG's. UO was my first "real time" MMORPG that had great pvp action.
I also played Air Warrior, Meridian 59, Chain of Command and those were some fantastic MMO's as well. Ahh the old days.

everquest was my first..i loved it..easy to pick up on in early lvls..i played it so much, then there was too much grinding .so then i hated it lol..
