For some reason, I seem to remember them saying, during their big announcement, The Landmark was going to Launch this winter? If its February 28 for Alpha and March 31 for closed beta it seems to miss they're missing their mark by half a year or more? I was looking forward to this game but the longer this drags out, the more its looking like "OLD SOE" who lied about Frogloks and had so many broken things during the launch of EQ 2, enough to the point that it pretty much killed it as a pay to play game....seriously :-(
Having read their site it seems to be an attempt to create a cross between second life and minecraft. I can't find a meaningful link between Landmark and the main game. What did I miss?
This "two games"-feature is nonsense on so many levels, i can't believe it.
At least one of both games will fail anyway and people will (righfully) forever say that both should have been joined in first place and "it could have been the greatest since..." etc.
After a crapload of games went down the drain or run on lifesupport 6 month after release due to bad business or design decisions, i can only shake my head about absolute irrational things like this still happening in the industry nowadays.

I am beginning to fear this too.

Hmmmm.... Not entirely sure if this is my "thing"...
It looks very bright and oversaturated and the chunkiness of everything keeps it squarely in cartoon territory. Could be fun I suppose, but I'd have to try it first.
I have to agree with you, somehow I can't seem to get to the point where I feel I would like to play and get immersed in this world. Thats probably why I could never really get into WoW, this graphics style is just not my thing.
Sad because I really liked EQ1 and even EQ2.......

Exactly.
Even though I'm not at all impressed witht the art style, I still hope the engine can muster some better graphics than this. The screenshots looks really bad.
The graphics are borderline weird. I don't know if it isn't possible to not have graphics like this for what they are trying to do, but I wouldn't be bothered by cartoony graphics or anything... These just look somehow... Plastic? I'm having a hard time describing them.
I just think they look really weird, and not the good kind of weird that sets them apart from other MMOs.
The weird graphics are the result of SoE using Pixar films such as Shrek for inspiration. The good news is since pretty much all the graphical assets can be altered in EQNL there is a good chance the player made areas will look better.
Have to pay for it twice? For Landmark and Next. I know it's f2p but I assume there is going to be gold membership options which remove whatever restrictions someone who pays $0 for the game would have.
There is no question the Minecraft idea is addictive, however i have been doing it for years,MANY years like at least 15 years always for FREE.
Unreal has been offering this and now a days in the UDK package for free,so how SOE figures it is worth giving them free money to sue is beyond me,i guess no harm in asking.Better yet is in the Unreal version for FREE,you can export, import and do a heck of a lot MORE than what SOE is allowing you to do.
This is not even SOE's work/effort,this is Voxels is it not?You might actually say that SOE is getting gamer's to pay for the Voxel licensing.
I posted a game on here the other day Planet Explorers, they are also using Voxel and doing quite a few unique things and you can get in and play around as well.Basically the same thing SOE is doing but without the 100 dollar founder pack and instead of hiding they are sharing everything about the game.
1) "Voxels" is a method, not a tool. Voxels (or another 10 terms used in the art industry) have been built and refined and modified over the last 20 years as a way to represent complex shapes with few pixels. The TOOL Sony has built in Landmarks that allows the manipulation of the art (voxels/normal/etc.) is very much their own, and I'm sure has taken considerable development time and money. (Much of it was built up during the development of the ForgeLight game engine, originally built to produce Planetside 2.) The equivalent of what you're saying is that Chevy's should be free because Ford invented them to begin with, which any rational person would say is asinine.
2) Game developers are not altruistic. (That means they aren't there entirely for your benefit.) They exist to make money. Its tough to make money if you don't charge money for what you make.

It is completely free? I don't understand your point of view at all. Allowing some people to play early if they want to pay does not make the game any less free. If you thought that the game would be truly free and not monetized in any way you are simply naive.
People who are really excited about the game will accept the brunt of the costs and those who are indifferent will get to try it without paying a dime. I still fail to see how this is some sort of problem for anyone? The only advantage they get is to play early and get a few hours of time saved by getting some items you can make in game yourself and a couple skins that mark you as a founder.

Everything is made of tiny blocks, like in Minecraft.
The colors are not very natural, the colors in these screenshots are different than earlier previews. Its something that will be fixed for sure.
Yeah but it looks kinda bad. Like Minecraft 2.0 or something. While it has the open world aspect going for it, I think Rift has a far more interesting building mechanics and a whole lot better looking, and it is also free, the downside is it is instanced. For a game based completely around building I would like to be able to build something that looks nice.

Bill did an article a little while back on Landmark that made me scratch my head a bit.
The entire point of Landmark is to build your own little (or large) abode. Guilds can cluster their creations and make towns. This seems to be the main focus: to build.
However, you need to buy your plot first.
So, if you need to open your wallet before you can make your house then how can they call it F2P? It's Pay to Play. I think they should be more upfront with this, as well as supplying the information of just how much the small, medium and large plots will cost.
Originally posted by Raquis I thought landmark was going to be free,so they want me to pay for a crafting game and test and create the game for them.
you are living in a dream world I will buy EQN and pay for a real other game before hand nl.ESO.
Landmark is free. You don't have to buy a founders pack to play. Almost every reference I've seen is that you claim your plot. I haven't seen anything that suggests you ever have to spend a penny on the game.

imo, there is something not quite right with the combination of colors, shadows and lighting.

Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

When in doubt, troll.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
SOE is not afraid to release alpha state MMOs.
