    EVE has expansions released every 6 months or so, the latest being Red Moon Rising which came out a couple of years ago. All the expansions are free, you just have to log onto the game and it will download the patch and you are good to go.

    Getting 2 years worth of updates might take some time though!

    However it completely eliminates screwing up how you built your character as you can get any skill no matter how you started.
    It also limits the need to play multiple characters since one can do everything.
    Powergamers will not like this concept however because they cannot jump ahed of everyone.

    The game didnt solve powergaming, it just made the powergamers purchase multiple accounts.  Its a scam by the devs of EVE to suck more money from you.

    You still have to grind for gold, but your grinding drags on longer because your gimped on skills to grind for gold effectively.  Another double-wammy of the real-time skill training.

    Yep, almost everyone has two accounts or more, one is their fighter type, the other is their tradeskill type. The game is so boring, most of your time is spent flying between systems to do a mission you have done before.

    Years = Weeks

    The Red Moon Rising update came out mid-December.  The post-patch trauma is also over with and fixed for the most part, though server load is still an issue.  This is getting fixed with a full cluster makeover in the next few months (150 x IBM duel core AMD 64bit BladeServers FTW!!!).  The next expansion will be out summer 2006.

    Well, I'm not exceptionally impressed with EVE from the trials I've played, but I just ordered it from Gamestation, £4, so I'm not losing much.

    EVE combat is boring. You can literally go afk, and come back 10 minutes later to see your ship is still firing. I'm not sure if it later becomes better, but I couldn't deal with it during my 14 day trial. The missions were all the same. Travel.... I took 10 minute trips as a newb, I don't even wanna know how god awful it is at higher stages. I like my games to be filled with fun not timesinks. EVE looks to be one huge timesink after another.

    The fact that there is no level grinding in a way depletes a majority of the content that most MMOs offer. So instead of the enjoyment and addiction of playing for a few more hours to level up and get that new skill...you get nothing. But at the same time this opens up the world to become more immersive. What Eve does is tries to eliminate the grind so that every activity is fun and enjoyable and you can do what you want without falling behind for NOT leveling.

    Unfortunately the activities aren't inherently fun like an RTS or FPS and the game becomes all about strategy and planning. So I would say the real time learning system is far superior to the grind system. We just need a wider range of more enjoyable activities in an MMO to really appreciate it.
