The link for this event does not load - and there is absolutely NO mention of the event on either the main GW2 site or the forums.

Question is what does this mean ? Why do they suddenly want to give free and hugely discounted copies of GW2 ?

BTW before: Game is dieing comments.

GW2 has never been more populated. I mean its almost as full as launch days. So not its not.

    My speculation?

They are about to announce expanision. And more players means more expansions sold.

What evil is being crushed in Gw2? It's a realm vs realm vs realm game made up off all the same factions.

I like GW2 but I would never renounce other mmos -- for any game

The site is live now. There was probably a bit of lag between the press announcement and the site going live.

Can you imagine if Blizz did this with WoW, what type of comments and threads would be going up left and right?....this is essentially GW2 going "F2P".

This is not a "game is dieng" post, just a "holy crap the hypocracy on this site is massive" post.

Giving 5000 copies of a game to contest winners means a game is going F2P?

    I'm amazed with your logic.

That is hilarious. I would never be brave enough to do something that goofy in public, but I think it is pretty great that ANet is doing this. 5,000 potential new GW2 players. I don't play anymore, but GW2 was amazing when I first played it. It was so cool to explore the land of Tyria for the first time. Just not so much the second. Or third.

On the eternal quest for that one perfect MMO.

I guess you missed the part about the massive discount...

F2P games are never F2P, there is still cost involved if you would like to participate in all of the content (for most F2P that is).

If you dont see similarities with anet vastly reducing the price of their main income source, with sub games dropping subs and putting in ia cash shop, then I guess we just view it very differently.

Im am not saying this is a bad thing (GW2 is doing plenty fine), im just pointing out that if WoW did something like this, it would be the end of the world according to most folks on this site.

It might be beneficial if they do drop the digital box cost. They barley made a thing off boxes last qt, and I mean barely a thing. This would get more people in their cash shop which is how this model makes money.

Good way get newbies in WvWvW so they can be farmed:p

They have been pushing GW2 box sales recently very hard and new cash shop items have been entering the game faster and faster. It has to be either they have an expansion on the horizon or they plan on slowing development soon significantly so they want to milk as much money as possible before that.

Or good way for asshats to buy new accounts to grief opposing servers. With this massive discount... expect it.

I have a sense of humor and am pretty laid back. This is great! It is original, and a tongue in cheek way of bolstering it's already healthy community. It makes me happy.

It worked for me a couple hours ago and I just linked it to my son just now. It is down again.

Cheesy and reeks of desperation. Guess sales are slowing down.
  • sonicwhip2sonicwhip2 Member Posts: 86

It seems like they are really trying to push box sales now. Ncsoft must be giving them some pressure or something.

Most of the people getting the game for free will most likely get bored within a few weeks or months since there is nothing to do at endgame and hardly any permanent new content.

I'll pass on this contest and continue waiting for Wildstar while playing WoW.

If I didn't get a permanent ban for using offensive language I would still be making them money and buying lots of gems.

I will never buy a new account no matter how low the price gets just so I can get banned again for a dumb reason.

Well at least they are clever with their advertisements. Getting others to advertise for them with both the video, as well as the fact it is a public place perhaps having people listen in by word of mouth.

...and yes, sales are probably down no matter what any GW2 fanboy might say, not that unexpected as it happens with any game, though I suspect that they were thinking their game would appeal and draw in tons of new players, which it isn't. They were probably banking on it making waves and it ended up being 'eh' with its 'new ideas' being exposed as being just slight variations of the same old while lacking much to do at the end. Their 'gameplay' wasn't good enough to really entertain people with everyones desire to have things to do at the end, the fact the combat was pretty weak in this game makes it difficult to keep people interested and playing no matter how many small updates they do spread over time (which btw, isn't bad for their model).

In short: Perhaps a bit silly but mildly interesting way to advertise a game that isn't doing nearly as well as they had originally hoped it to due to its lacking in gameplay to make up for less 'end game grind' of sorts to keep players interested in playing.

GW2 is one big huge anti-communist propaganda. You can see this clearly with how they portray and handle dredge and ridicilous characters like "Riot" Alice (lol, just goes to show how elementary school level their writing and general knowledge is). They are only capable of creating charicatures and lack the ability and knowledge of the subject to be able to create a realistic portrayal. Certainly they aren't the only devs doing this, most western devs are, but in GW2 it's especially gross. But yeah, keep on glorifying royalty and accumulating wealth while killing the people who are fighting back because their homes are taken away from them. Some heroes we are.
