It couldn't be that everyone who could possibly hear about the game did hear about the game and tried it out from day one rather than later? No, that would be crazy.

Drinking the Super Hyper flavored Kool-Aid leads to illusions of grandeur. Being an MMO-Veteran, I'd expect you to have figured that out by now.

Agreed.
I'm having serious issues with quest hubs now. I want them obliterated.
This. It may seem slight but for those of us that have grown to despise quests and quest hubs, this is far better. Hell Darkfall has feats which are grind x of this and that is better than a required quest hub. Mainly because they don't force you down a linear quest hub path (SWTOR among countless others). I'm completely done with linear quest hubs.
Originally posted by fantasyfreak112 It fell off because you never actually progress, the game just tries to make you think you're progressing. The button spamming playstyle doesn't help either.
the game fails for you when you are obsessed and addicted to progression and play 23/7.
Play GW2 when you feel like and it's one of the best f2p mmo's out there.
I tried this.
I got bored by level 35 and didnt feel like playing again.

Renaming something doesnt reinvent the wheel.
I kicked up GW2 late as I was already entertained with Minecraft & having a kid at the time. That said im currently bought, bit the bullet and paid the $40.
The game from the start is great, very indepth, very involving, allowing you to also make character choices. However getting to level 35 It soon dawned on me the entire game was going to be:
- Go to new area
- do all Hearts
- explore all area
- complete quest in area
- start again
Also the crafting system isnt really that innovative, the only sink factor it seems to have is the length of time required to gather all the needed resources to actually keep your crafting skills on par with your combat skills. It eventually became very very boring. Esp when the auction house can provide items cheaper and easier.
That said, I know I didnt play the game to max level, but frankly im at a point in my gaming where I feel "why should I have too?" I play a game to enjoy it, when its not fun, why bother?
Key turn off points for me:
- Human females wear next to no clothing
- Human males look like teenagers
- rat race?
- Just couldnt take the races seriously
- Combat system providing the same skills with weapons from level 1 to max, it means my char is going to be exactly the same at level 80 as it is at level 10, good job NCsoft.
- Heart system is just a quest rehash.
- Leveling system is boring
- Crafting system is boring
- game doesnt encourage grouping
EDIT: Further to that, I played the original GW, which was Brilliant, I played it to death! While I hate instancing as a whole and I give NCsoft credit for creating a persistant world. They havent quite hit the mark for me. Perhaps its the combination of childish races, not being able to take my character seriously, half naked women left right and center, no grouping, cartoony graphics or what idk.
I'm still playing GW2. Not because it is good though. Because friends and family are playing it. When something better comes out, I am so gone. I think the combat actually dumbs down a player's skill. Less buttons to press and all. The leveling is plain boring. After all that though, the biggest joke is WvW combat.
What you have with WvW is a pure junk. Players aren't loyal to their servers and hop around to whatever server is winning. The new leagues made it even worse. All people care about is winning the "point" game (PPT). Fighting is done with huge balls of zerg players, and at the head of this are the same three or so classes. Count on a ton of stun-spamming warriors. So basically strategy, tactics, and player skill are thrown completely out the door and people just blob up under the "commander" who runs around in circles against the enemy blob just like his own. The blob with the better mix of players (usually the one with more people) wins. Don't let these self-proclaimed chest-beaters who say they are "zerg busters" fool you. They are just more organized blobs using the same cheap-ass tactics... There is no reason to do anything strategic or hold land unless it generates points. Finally, as I stated above, the different classes (professions) are all pretty much stuck in the same gear/traits in order to survive in the giant blob of doom.
If you happen to be on a top tier mega blob server expect people to talk a ton of trash about your server's small team skills. They can't win the PPT game, so they go to the forums and ask for small Guild Vs. Guild fights. This, my friends, is just as rigged as blobbing and has its own meta that makes the GvG players useless in the above blobbing meta. Yet all players must respect the elite skillz of the GvG group... I've never seen people make such excuses for losing in my life. Yet there it is.
Finally you have roamers and small group fighters. These guys are pissed off because most of them have great combat skills, but the whole meta described above ruins the game for them. Even though the game was designed to be World VS. World, they feel they are entitled to open-world pvp and don't work with the point mongers who want to win for the server. Think of these guys as your griefing teenage bullies. Some of them are extremely skilled, but most of them just run away when they face someone who can defeat them or bring more friends. Almost all of them abuse easy-mode classes to do it.
I remember the days of Dark Age of Camelot. Realm pride actually meant something. Holding the relic didn't do much more than provide bragging rights. Nowadays, people who play games must constantly have a reward stuck up their ass to consider playing a game mode. Back then we could have small fights, zerg fights, or whatever we wanted, but we were all working together when the proverbial poop flew into the fan.
Like the real world, MMOs have gone to the dumps.

Sure if you are the horse and need that carrot dangling in front of you all the time as you can't make your own content and rely on tiered progression, then GW2 migth not be the game for you and you migth be better off in a land far, far away with elves and trolls, taurens and nasty orcs.
I agree! In fact, why have a game or even a computer for that matter! Just make your own content everywhere bro. If you can't entertain yourself you're clearly a simpleton. No reason to play any game when you can play invisible ninja fighting in your back yard.
I agree with who you quoted but I must say what you wrote was pretty funny and good too. I think I actually played invisible ninja fighting in my backyard when I was a kid.

To each his own, but everything I said in my post about WvW is factual. If you think GW2 is the best game out right now I sort of feel sorry for you. I'm playing the game myself, so I guess I'm no better than you are. Still, the game sucks and isn't anything near what they said it would be. Its a B2P game now. ... we are talking about a game with abundant magic, wolf-looking things and little furry midget hobbit-things- I wouldn't be overly concerned by realism.

Hate to break it to you two but realm/server pride no longer exists in modern day MMO's. It's not just GW2, it'll continue to be this way for any future faction PVP MMO.
This typically starts prior to beta when all the super guilds decide to team up and stack the odds in their favor as heavily as they can to ensure the all mighty win. This has a terrible trickle effect as smaller guilds and solo players gravitate to the winning side with server hopping the norm.
It sucks for sure and the reason i stopped playing, but as i stated - players don't care anymore.

Combat is not innovative and barely skill based... I mean BARELY any improvement over the vintage style of spam.
I only played GW2 for around 2 months and I can tell you that you are wrong on this big. And before I explain, the reason why I only palyed for that amount of time was due to my guild not sticking around and getting deeper into TSWs raids at the time.
People stating that GW2s combat was not deep and just spam never figured out the F keys and the ability to switch stance/builds. I played an Elementalist all the way to 80 and that class was deep and very hard to master. Learning to continually swap all four elements to keep buffs up, heals going, CCs on while damaging was extremely difficult.
Not to mention watching those videos of one elementalist taking on around 10 people at the same time in WvW, holding them off for 8 minutes, killing most of them before finally dying.
Most people are so used to spam and face rolling that they never learned its real depth and flexibility.
Call me lazy if you must but this is why I hate the ele, too much button mashing!
1. WvWvW is the best PvP-content in any current fantasy MMO.
2. Questing is great fun. Ok, not all dynamic quests are equally good. But over all it is the best leveling experience in any current fantasy MMO.
3. Graphics are fantastic. Still the best looking fantasy MMO out there.
4. Combat is so good, that I cannot play other MMOs anymore. All the others feel so static and boring compared to GW2.
I understand, that end-game-raid-gear-progression is the most important thing for many players - but not for all players. And spreading lies is just stupid.

WvWvW can barely even be considered PvP. Running around in a giant blob smooshing buttons on keep doors and anything that moves is a pathetic attempt at PvP and I think less of anyone that enjoys it. This is as much of a problem with the player base as it is with the developers though. Endgame progression is almost nonexistent , which is why I lost interest in the game after a month or so.

If you are playing GW2 to 80 all I can say is if you expect anything diffterent at all than 1-80 you are going to really be complaining here as this game offers ZERO and I mean ZERO end game activities other than a random fractal dungeon runner. This game is VERY and I mean VERY casual and nothing about it screams Esport , except maybe to some casual players.
Why do people keep saying GW2 offers zero endgame activities??? Just hit 'H' and look at your Achievements tab and there's your endgame activity! Suppose you managed to complete all that, you can grind for Legendaries. What this game lacks is the usual reward system found in most MMOs. Just say it...you want a specific kind of reward.

It did change the mmo genre. It made b2p, non-trinity dynamic events and may other features mainstream mmo features. This game was the biggest divergence from the wow clones the fantasy mmo has seen in a long time.

I did play in "organized groups" before. You spend half the time killing stragglers and the other half running from the zerg. Woopdie doo. If people accepted a full group as the norm to run with the game would have potential as you could have DAoC style group vs. group fights. Too bad the norm is a giant mindless zerg of facerolling buttonmashers and always will be.

I think they wanted to actually, but didn't because of reasons I can't remember, plus the pros of leveling down aren;t that bad.
Example content can be relevent, like they just added new content but to a lower lvl area making it enjoyable for almost all levels, because of the down level a bunch of level 80s can't just come one hit kill everything knocking of the challenge, contrary to ones belief if down leveling never happened any attempt to add content could be soloable literally.
The story in certain areas would only be enjoable to a small fraction of people who play the game least far as it being hard or not. So that's mainly why they went with downleveling there are other reasons I'm sure but will just leave it at that.
Come to think of it people(some or many) can't operate with levels, and better to have than not, now that saying can't be made to many things MMO Related but levels I believe it's best to have em while you can.

Look kid, I know a properly fitted suit of infantry plate doesn't hinder movement as much as most people think. I know there were both well-made and poorly made swords from the east and west, and I know western swords were not inferior. In fact, people who claim such are a pet peeve of mine.
Try to avoid assumptions in the future, they just make you look stupid.
Oh, and you're still not going to be dodging and leaping around like a kangaroo while wearing plate, regardless of how well it's fitted. Even a trained knight would quickly become fatigued from that activity, as plate can add upwards of 30 pounds of weight. Furthermore I never said that a heavy armor class couldn't duck & dodge; my complaint is that said class is required to do so in order to survive, in spite of having full plate.
Hell, every class feels like its made of tissue paper because of the dodging requirement. It's hard to feel heroic when you get one-shotted on a regular basis, regardless of class or armor type.

... we are talking about a game with abundant magic, wolf-looking things and little furry midget hobbit-things- I wouldn't be overly concerned by realism.
It's obviously not a sandbox. Same levling system as any other game....except that you level down so if you want to experience the story, you can while not being walk through a park overpowered.
Bring on a true sandbox game!
Actually levelling down is one of my most hated features- it makes a complete nonsense of the entire levelling process- it is beyond moronic. If you are going to arbitrarily change a players level to suit the area they are in, why not get rid of traditional levels all together?
Agreed
Hate to break it to you two but realm/server pride no longer exists in modern day MMO's. It's not just GW2, it'll continue to be this way for any future faction PVP MMO.
This typically starts prior to beta when all the super guilds decide to team up and stack the odds in their favor as heavily as they can to ensure the all mighty win. This has a terrible trickle effect as smaller guilds and solo players gravitate to the winning side with server hopping the norm.
It sucks for sure and the reason i stopped playing, but as i stated - players don't care anymore.
This is actually true
Call me lazy if you must but this is why I hate the ele, too much button mashing!
It really needs some macros to make it playable!
This is a rant - rofl
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.
It was the MMO that would change the way MMOs were played and developed forever...
... of course, that was after SWTOR was supposed to be that, but failed...
Ah, another one who's never had the chance to get into an organized group. It's like you experienced nothing but the worst case scenarios one could experience in WvW.
It did change the mmo genre. It made b2p, non-trinity dynamic events and may other features mainstream mmo features. This game was the biggest divergence from the wow clones the fantasy mmo has seen in a long time.
Just because peoples mom doesn't talk about it at dinner doesn't mean it didn't change things.
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.
P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!
