[General Article] WildStar: Turning into a Formidable MMO

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Information about WildStar has come largely from Carbine Studios....until today. We have a full suite of articles that cover the game in general, PvP, crafting, the Medic and Engineer classes and housing. It's a ton of information that you simply do not want to miss. Read on!

Of course, graphics and story are mere seasoning; it's gameplay that's the meat. At this stage it's hard to tell how Wildstar's notions of dual DPS/Healer (or tank) characters will really work, either alone or in groups, and more time is definitely needed to see how the different character builds play out. The good news is that the game has ample attributes to tinker with and plenty of opportunities to develop your character. (Personally, I'm tickled that one of the attributes is “moxie.”) The controls are also nice. By holding down the Shift key, characters can sprint for a short period, which makes running less of a chore, and things like talking to people and picking up loot are automatically streamlined through the use of keyboard controls. Finally, a quick double tap on the S or W keys allows you to dodge attacks.

It definitely looks interesting, but so do almost all MMOs pre-release. The question is if it can deliver a fun and refreshing experience, or will it simply feel like WoW in Space?

i agree the screens have a SWTOR feel to them but after playing Stress test i can honestly say it feels allot different then SWTOR (allot better).

Bioware really fucked themselves with the engine they choose.

I think I need to give it a try before I comment. I'm having trouble with cartoony graphics.

True, but i will say the company seems to have the right mind set. There not trying to rush what they have, listening to feedback by activley talking on blogs, websites, etc, also providing great information on many aspects of the game. but your right, hopefully all this wont be going to waste.

I don't have any bones about it looking world of warcraftish, thats good in my book. From what I can tell they are really taking a page from blizzards book with the philosophy " do what everyone else is doing, but do it better" if that's the case and I think it will be, Wildstar is about to become my new world.

"In addition to becoming 'things' Mordesh, Mechari, Human and Aurin and choosing primary role such as Warrior, Esper (brainy types with psi-powers) Spellslinger, Stalker, Engineer and Medic, you can add a secondary specialization and become a Soldier, Explorer, Settler or Scientist."

Apart from being a garbled sentence, there is no need to use the word 'things'. Less coffee before you write might help. :)

if it was free i would play it but not for a paid wow star, how can dis not be a clone, even the devs are from wow. i played the closed beta and game is good, but nothing new, will not pay for it.

All I can say is, I'll be glad when NDA is lifted.

I think people should stop the wow-clone thing. It is not like it was first mmo out there. Sure I have to say that WoW is the one that made MMO a major thing. But at the same time we aren't saying every 2d jumping game is super mario clone are we? Sure it looks same and it will have same things cause just some things work. If you do different things most of the time those things dont work.

The thing is that we have to make whole new type of mmo to get something really new. So please stop it and try wildstar in open beta when and if it will have it. All people who play the game I think they know what kind of game it is and we do have eyes ourself. So we know what the game looks like and feel. Just saying.

Having seen PVP and Dungeons on the live streams Carbine has done this game has tons of potential. If they succeed there won't be another game out there like it. The feel and movement in their combat system is just that unique. Like all MMO's though the proof is in the pudding. I am optimistic about the prospect of Wildstar but only time will tell.

I just can't stand the art style. Maybe wildstar suffers here from my huge disappointment with EQN graphics and that is definately unfair against wildstar. But I can't help it, the graphics are a no go for me.

I believe the writer meant they chose engineer and not spellslinger.  Also, the engineer is not a healer/dps combo but has tank/dps capabilities.  All the classes get 1 support role option either tank or heals.  3 tanks, 3 heals in total.  All classes can dps.

Other than how the dominion tutorial unfolds, I didn't see anything new.

    Thank goodness!

On the other hand I will pay! Hooray!

Regarding graphics, clean and detailed, not to many polys mean better performance. No need for ultra realism, its stylized intentionally and it wont make me look "grown up" by dismissing them as childish... you know who I am talking about.

Well who do you think is paying the bills on this site? LIterally every single article on the feed is about Wildstar, or a preview from Wildstar. This website is notorious for praising garbage. SWTOR got 9s and 10s from every staff writer except one, who then got fired for giving it a low score.

I don't expect anything new or interesting to come from people who made WoW.

I was lucky enough to play this at press releases and PAX.

It's the best MMO since WoW.

Correction: Danny got let go because he was posting his articles across other sites and forums, before they were published here.  If we really cared about his score, the article in question would be gone.

As to why this many articles: it's a major embargo drop. We do this for all big games that let us go nuts on coverage.

As for "paying the bills": it looks to me like Perfect World is today, judging by the site skin.  But I really wouldn't know, because the only people who do anything with ads are the site owners.  Editorial and Community just do our own thing, though you may not believe it.

Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

To be fair, Carbine dropping the NDA on level 1-15 for the press is probably the biggest news in MMO gaming today.  I would expect today's (and probably tomorrow's and possibly this weekend's) conversation to revolve around it.  That's how these things works.  Something interesting happens and people talk about it.

I remember when people used to be excited for new mmos.  I can't imagine how tiring it must be to have to explain yourself to the bitter/jaded vocal minority.  I just wanted to say that I'm personally looking forward to Wildstar (more then any other mmo tbh).  So, thank you for taking the time to post all this information.
