What do you want in an MMO?

RaassRaass Member UncommonPosts: 24

Please take your time and think about this. Make your list like mine please. Notes to the side and can bold really important ones to you.

1. Solo play- important to me to do quests solo

2. Dungeons - make Solo, Group or Raid, harder in each class for better drops, some players are just better then others

3. Option on quests to open Dungeons - I hate to be forced to do a quest or quest line to open crap up (dungeons).

I leave games for this reason alone.

4. Right click option list- Give us a right click of options to report in game chat. I hate gold sellers.

5. Guild Options- have a nice list of options for guild masters to use.

6. Bags and storage- Big time concern for players it here. Stack every thing should stack and have sort with options.

Resources needed for crafting should be in its own bag.

7. Crafting- well I don't do a lot of this I hope people that do will post their needs in this area.

8. Holding aggro- Man so many game fail to give tanks the tools needed to hold aggro. A must !

9. Group and Raid loot options- Give the leader of the Group or Raid the options for loot drops.

10. PvP- Give options in here for the players that want player kill loot drops. I don't like the idea but a lot of people do.

So if a players want to place his items up for grabs let them.

11. End game- So many MMOs release and have no end game content. There are players (beta testers) that know the game      and its a pride thing for them to be the first in everything. Have end game content at release.

12. In game Game Masters- Man these people can come in handy when your stuck on a quest that nerf or you find that     spot in the game with the hole in the world and your under the game world.

Well I'm sure I am not hitting everything but these are what I like and don't like.

I hope this game has a lot of what I'm looking for. I getting tired of downloads that cost money and play for 1-2 months.

But I will keep doing it til I find my home. I hope it is this game.

Post yours.

Please don't slam people for their ideas , wants and needs in a game.

I want to play an MMO with support for an Occulus Rift Like headset :-) lol...but everyone else has to as well so I'm not at a disadvantage.

Freedom. No good game truly offers this, you're always forced into some style of play or game limitation. I guess.. sandbox mmo's then? lol.

I want a virtual, living, breathing medieval world where only the truly skilled and dedicated become heroes of note.

I love a personal story for single player but they kill it for me in MMOs... we can't all be the Dragonborn!

The biggest thing for me is for MMO's to get back to being part of a large group/guild important again. All the recent MMO's have been all about solo content. Solo the whole game if you want. What is wrong with interacting with other people to accomplish things in a game? I understand why game companies have gone that route, to obtain the most money possible for their game. Get the largest reach of money. I get the business aspect, but there is no more "guild pride" "faction pride" and in recent MMO's no reason to even be in a guild or you can be in as many as you want as it has no meaning in games anymore.

I don't feel every piece of content in an MMO should be completable solo or a by group of five people.

    Just my opinion of course.

I listed a few things in a few threads bu the bare minimum to cover all bases...

    Crafting

    Housing

    PvP

    Exploration

    Reputations

    Cosmetics

    Open world caves/mines not instanced

    Open world encounters Co-ops

    Add ons

    Customizable UI

    Storage (a lot)

    Mounts

Gold sinks-armor repair, maintenance, taxes and fees.

    AH/Economy

To add to some of that.

Mounts that can carry stuff and some that go faster or can carry more. They dont have to have flying mounts either.

Co-ops and open world encounters have to be more unpredictable. The more people the more adds or whatever. Rift is OK Warhammer was OK, but if you have 100 people simply scaling the same mob with more HP doesnt do anything. But having a bunch of adds join the fight does. And if a certain amount of people die he (the boss mob) becomes indestructible and moves to a next stage. Not a complete wipe but if there are X amount of people and half die at some point that is enough to trigger it. In Rift there is no 'penalty' for dying at least in relationship to the event. You know have consequences for things. Not just run, do it and collect a reward.

Reputations, make it so you have to decide what NPC faction you want to do or become involved with. If A and B are enemies if you do quests for both you stay fairly neutral but if you do more for one you gain rep and lose rep. There also has to be items with each one, most obvious is crafting recipes and mounts or cosmetic stuff. But you shouldnt be able to be max rep with every NPC group in any game. But that also adds to crafting and economy so peopel wont all have the same stuff to bog the AH down with.

Somethings I would like to see personally but might not be popular. Wear and tear on armor that takes money to keep up. Mandatory resting or a system where you need to eat food to stay up to strength. That would make cooking a very nice craft to have. So you have to replenish magic (mana) and stamina if you play or fight a lot. Rest or food only way to keep it at max. So food wouldnt be just some buff (that isnt needed in most games anyway) but actually necessary to play an extended amount of time.

Day and night cycles, weather and seasons that is also tied to open world events and quests and even mobs. So you wouldnt see X if it were a rainy night in Summer. That would also tie into crafting/economy, where farmers couldnt grow certain things all the time. But it opens up a lot of possibilities.

There are more but those off the top of my head. I know the developers want their content to be available all the time every day. But in reality THAT is why people get bored. BECAUSE it is there all th time everyday. Thats why PvP is the 'easiest' end game/time sink because it is the only thing that isnt always predictable. But even that does after awhile become predictable especially in small instances.

The first MMO that creates and delivers content that isnt the same day in and day out will be the one that takes over. AT least until the next one comes along that does something totally different from that.

I want an mmo that's free on the entitlement crowd.

I want an mmo that's free of those who think they know what a certain game should be because they are the actual pros.

i want an mmo that people don't post blatant lies about a video game cause it's not what they as pros would have made it.

I want an mmo that people don't spend years crying and whining because it's not a video game they like.

So those are few things I think would make a great mmo.  We will never sees those in an mmo ever.

I want an Asheron's Call re-skinned in a GW2 like graphics.  A Neverwinter like fast-paced Combat.  A Path of Exiles like Passive skill tree and a procedurally generated world like Cubeworld.

Too me that would be the perfect MMO.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

................... to look, play and feel like TES (not like SWTOR), but online.

Is it too much to ask?

Complete open world, that means that once out of character creation I can hit auto run and will keep going to the other end of the world...barring mountains/buildings/tress being in the way. No invisible barriers.

A full crafting system. This means not just weapons/armor/alchemy/cooking. There should be 1000s of items that can be made including items for homes and vanity items characters can hold like mirrors, flowers, brooms, fireworks, costumes.

Housing with the ability to place items in them.

An in game modding tool similar to CoH/Neverwinters Foundry only with far more options like being able to make guild and pvp zones.

Not having my hand held in any way. I don't need to be guided from the area with lvl 1-5 mobs to the lvl 6-10 area all the way to end game, sure don't want to be funneled to an end game PvP zone closed off from the rest of the world. Same goes for closed factions to create "pride". I am a grown up, I don't need someone to do these things for me.

Since you are asking in the ESO forums, I don't want classes nor the limitations that come with them. I want to use skills that I want, when I want even if it means I gimp my character, at least its MY choice.

Customizable UI, I don't mean being able to move the UI they give us. To be able to use a player made UI because no company in the history of gaming has made a perfect UI,it can always be improved upon by people that actually play the game.

No gear grind. Worst idea in the history of RPGs, creating content not based on people doing it for fun, but for something shiny. Carrots on a stick are used to give mules a reason to move forward, if it isn't the content doing it, the game is bad. it also creates a downward spiral of having to continually add more powerful items making old content more and more outdated via power levels, also leads to more ridiculous future content, some games even wound up with players facing gods...and beating them. The worst thing it brings are the elitists that try to turn a game into a job by demanding raids be done continually and pass on players just because they don't have the best gear. A game should be 100% accessible to players at all times and it should never fell like a job.

No PvP reward system. PvP should be done for the fun and challenge of facing another person, not a shiny. Shinys are added to cover the cheap gameplay that apparently isn't worth doing on its own according to those that demand rewards for doing it. It also leads to AFKers and really bad players doing it because they just plain need the item that's awarded for it. Worse yet it leads to one person being OP because of gear and not skill. Keep PvP for those that actually want to do it for the PvP.

Meaningful, in world, faction based PVP. To me, playing against other people, for control of an area, is a much more alluring challenge than running the same raid over and over again. Eventually, you are simply going through the motions and grinding gear. Don't get me wrong, raiding has it's place and I know there are people who swear buy it. That's great for them. But for me, I only raid on occasion. I love faction based PvP. That's what will keep me coming back. Even if other elements of the game are not stellar.

Exploration and an accomplishment, or quest, system that doesn't seem linear.

    1) I agree Solo Play is important.

    2) Again I agree, mostly. I like the idea of solo dungeons, but I think that group dungeons + raids should give the best of loot.

    3) Disagree here, I love having long quest requirements for RAIDS. And even then, not all raids. I remember WoW Burning Crusade, Karazhan had an interesting but long questline.

    4) Convenient and quick way to report gold sellers is a very positive and good idea. Agreed.

    5) Making Guilds nice and diverse by letting the Guild Master decide multiple things is very cool indeed. Agreed.

    6) Convenient sorting and stacking options, I agree.

    7) As for crafting, I think it's important. Whether or not it should produce the "best of the best" equipment, I'm not sure of, there's some games where the only equipment in the entire game comes from nothing but crafting, so it depends on the game.

    8) I agree with aggro being utilized properly.

    9) I agree with loot options.

    10) As far as PvP goes, I love Open World PvP. "Hardcore" elements being added to a game does nothing but increase my interest. With this said, Wildstar still has me interested even though it has Open World PvP without any mentioning of "hardcore" elements, similar to WoW. I've never been a big fan of Battlegrounds or Arenas, unless they're done right.

    11) As for End Game content, I agree, I'd love to see a very large amount of end game content. I like a game with a very developed economy, open world PvP, and a lot of "hard-to-earn" and "tedious" equipment that can be acquired. With these elements, I am wiling to put in a lot of hours end game.

    12) Agreed, again I only saw this perfected in World of Warcraft. Say what you want about Blizzard and WoW, I know I quit long ago, but their customer support was definitely spot on.

(I try not to my comments that are solely negative but the phrase "permanently grouped" gave me such a feeling of disgust and horror... that's an even more repulsive design concept than permadeath. x_X )

As for what I DO want in an MMO, I've probably said most of this before in other threads, but no harm going through it again.

    1. Story.  The number one thing I want out of a game is to have the coolness of the world and the interestingness of the NPCs explained to me through story with style an pacing.  Story is what creates orientation within a game world for me and gives me raw material for my solo roleplaying.

    2. World.  I want it to be science fiction or fantasy, with adventure humor, a bit or romance, maybe some anime flavor, NO horror, NO tragedy, NO grittiness, NO testosterone-soaked war/honor/revenge theme going on.  NO focus on crime or politics, no epic high fantasy or coldly-mercantile sci-fi.

    3. NPCs.  I'm really sick of MMOs that don't even have NPCs.  I want deep NPCs that I interact with several times and I can court my favorite ones until (a copy of them) moves to my personal property.

    4. Personal property.  I want to be building up a little ranch that is a combination of crafting appliances, storage, farming, pet/mount breeding facilities, collection displays, and a self-designed and painted house, maybe decorated with sculptural elements using items found in the game.

    5. Crafting.  I don't want the main (futile) goal of crafting to be to try to sell crap to other players.  I like crafting for myself, not grinding out 50 of an item no one needs for XP.  I want to dye my armor purple so I can be coordinated when I go out on the town.  I want to craft my epic armor by getting a high score on the clothing-crafting minigame.

    6. Worldwide marketplace.  I hate, loathe, and detest player-run shops.  I don't have patience for that crap.  Let me freaking search all the stuff available for sale, let other players search for what I'm selling, give me tools for finding the best price per unit and remembering what price I listed the same item at last time I sold one.

    7. Collecting.  I want to collect one of every pet monster in the game, and breed unique ones to complete the collection.  I want to be able to be able to collect clothing items for their looks, not for their stats; if the game has stat-affecting gear at all I want to be able to change its appearance or cover it up with a different gear's appearance.  I want to be able to admire other players' collections and write them complimentary notes on their profile or wall, and I want other players to be able to do the same for me.

    8. Security.  I want my personal property, my collections, and myself to be safe from other players.  NO non-consenting PvP!  NO ability to mess up someone else's property and buildings.  NO robbing the bank unless I can opt out of using the bank.  NO NPCs that steal my stuff either.  I don't really care about verbal harassment, all I really need for that is the ability to delete others' comments on my profile/wall/sculptures/etc.

    9. Soloing.  Last, but probably second-most-important, I don't want to play a game with mandatory group play, nor a game focused on group play such that I fell like 3/4 of the game I'm not in the target audience for.  I like to talk to other people, I like to trade with other people, I'll even roleplay with other people, but I really don't want to fight alongside them; that just puts them too much in my face and it's frustrating and there's a lack of people I want to interact that closely with.  I feel the most proud and satisfied of myself when I accomplish things by myself.  And I like switching between in-game activities at my own pace, I hate hurrying to keep up with someone else or feeling that I am inconveniencing them when I have to beg for help with something the game renders me unable to do on my own.

I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

As a natural-born-designer I'm confused by this too.  I've never brewed beer (though I made a decent sweet mead a couple times).  But I observe that as a beer drinker I don't like the flavor of hops, so it would be easy for me to tell a beer brewer that if they're trying to make a beer to please me, don't put hops in it.  Not being able to predict what you will and won't like just shows a lack of self-observation and self-analysis to me. :P
