My top 5 of recent let-downs in MMO's

The My top 5 of recent let-downs in MMO's was a great read.

It's amazing how many of the things listed as let-downs are now established 'norms' in games.

Thanks for the link!  This is getting stashed on my fileserver for reference.

@ OP:  I'm thinking this should be a blog.

In my opinion, looking back at where we (as a community) were, is a great way to understand where we are and how we got here.

    Some rather interesting threads.

    Great idea, greenreen!

My god that is like a fucking time machine

Looking 2004 is the most interesting imo, it was when WoW released and nobody knew what it would become in the future

A shame that today's WoW is just a mere shadow

    ....rofl

There was really a time when I did play for a short time some asian grinders (open betas) i.e. Tantra, Rose Online, Lineage 2, Risk your Life, xxx, xxxx, ....jesus.

Dark & Light open beta, damn I can remember this quiete good and feels almost like yesterday. What kind of a disaster, a lot of people did burn their fingers who bought this game and getting no refund at all. The company was located in madagascar, very clever and almost untouchable.

The Vanguard hype was big and the forums discussions full of heat.....so much hype and such a big nose dive.

The SWG beta was fun, first time I saw that people were dancing for tip, dancer was an ingame career, there was a career as musician possible aswell who played for them.......LOL dance bitches.... and we give you some tip.

World of Warcraft, well a bright star was born . This game did really contribute to the genre, interesting quests and not just go grind 50 beetles and a lively world. Undercity the first time, alone using the elevator was nice and watching all the art looking upwards. In general devs had an eye for details and fun.

Its good to see that at the end not much did change except the bad part with F2P games, the same type of games selling hope to their players. Some burn their fingers and learn from it, some still hype new games neverless .....

I'm curious how many people who posted in threads from 2003-04 have been able not only to keep their original account but still actively post today.

Heh, lots of deleted users in some of those posts. :-)

Looks like that was a bit of work, and it turned out to be an interesting read. Great jorb!

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Congrats on making it through this site for that long. I"ve read some threads in my 4 years that make the lines in my brain cross. I know that you have seen some things that make you question human nature. I know you are in it for the long haul though.

I got banned in 2004 and thought it was permanent so I made a new one. Good thing I learned that lesson or I'd be on account number...umm...20ish :P

But I have been coming here since the site was just a list of mmos. I think the forums went up around 2003 but the site was here since maybe 2001?/2 ?

enlightening and depressing all at the same time :)

So true! A new forum game: Try to figure who the deleted users were. If they were quoted later on, you have the answer :)

Thanks, Greenreen. This was a neat idea :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

deleted user is still one of those things I'll just never quite understand. I saw PWN_FACE just deleted his account. No idea why. I guess it's one of those things I will just never understand.

I would guess they did it for one of two reasons. They are teenagers, there is no such thing as history, so just let the angst carry you to that delete button. They are known to their friends under that name on this site, that will teach you to rant like a madman. :)

Great idea, and thanks for spending the time to bring us this history.

Just looking at the titles of the posts and what changed or didn't over the years was interesting.  Strange to look back not just on one's own gaming history, but on that of this whole gaming community.  Fascinating to think of a time pre-WoW and ponder whether anyone guessed how successful it would become (in terms of number of players and revenue) and how it would become the template for so many mmo's.

I often think that there is a wealth of intelligence and creativity among some of the core posters on this website.  Fascinating to wonder what could be achieved if the focus was something other than gaming.  Not that there's anything wrong with gaming per se, of course.
