I use differing names in each MMO I have played. If I can, I'll try to get a name that is somewhat lore following. An Elf named "Dorkus" does not fit very well, in my opinion. WoW was so bad that I started naming all my characters staring with a "Q" because so many names were taken. Soon, my friends would see a character with a name starting with "Q" that they would ask that player if they were me. Most of the time, it was

Back in "the old days" I did this, too. I had a couple of Elf names I used, a couple of Dwarf names, a couple of Human names, and so on.
With the numbers in the games being over the top now, it is much harder to do. Now it is more of a mini-game to find a feasible name at character creation. I can spend some time on my character's looks, but you have to multiply that creation time when trying to find a suitable name

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

Same here. I have a small stable of names I reuse across the games.
The names also correspond to roles. When I return to a game, I glance at the levels and names of the characters, which usually helps me remember why I stopped playing.
I try for the same, one of my main 2-4 but unlike the old text game days people actually beat me to my own names now:(
Trillistar Auriestre and Feldran Firefinger since '73, Tiera Wishperil and Esperon Wishwind added 5 or so years later, the last 2 not being unique enough to claim as my own.
Basically the same name in every game since DAOC. Aside from alt names which are mostly the same. It's kind of lore appropriate in every game I've played, and it's never been taken before me. I guess i just get lucky.

I made up the character Homitu when I was about 9 years old. Later, when the internet became popular along with online games, I learned that it was essentially a unique, original name that nobody else used. I've happily kept on using it throughout the years. I almost always make a character with the name in every game I play, and it's usually my main - but it's not mandatory. Sometimes the class, race and gender combination I wish to main calls for something else.
I also like to play as Wheel of Time characters, so sometimes one of those will be my main.
I usually use different names for different games, but on occasion, I will use the same name for a character in one game that I used for another in a different game.
I have been this way since AD&D. I have a name for my 'wizard', my 'fighter', my'ranger' etc...or the equivalent. Also now have the name of my bank toon added to the list.
Its really quite funny that in tabletop gaming, these characters are now NPC's in my Pathfinder campaign.
My avatars have been with me from the tabletop, through MUDS, into MMORPG (and single payer) and will hopefully accompany me into the Virtual reality of the future.

Sounds like you need better names

Usually different because of a different game. Now I'll reuse the same names for that game on different servers.
Though I have two iconic names that I'll sometimes reserve and even rarely play.
Same holds true with me on forums, I never use the same name.
