Rift.  It is like WoW, but with better graphics and better.....everything, really.  I played WoW for 5 years, but it is just really dated and tired, which is why I love Rift.

    Currently playing:
    Rift
    Played:
SWToR, Aion,EQ, Dark Age of Camelot
    World of Warcraft, AoC

    i enjoyed swtor combat.

However, just like WoW it has a gear grind for pvp... and I beleive it worse than WoW that it takes longer to get the last tier of gear so if you want to be competitive and with alts... well, its up to you if you want to do that. Also keep in mind the tier only lasts a few months, before expansion 2.0 came out they had 3 gear sets, or 2 new ones, meaning that people that attained top gear had to get top gear again for no reason in the same end game of lvl 50.

Music of swtor to me is nothing special. It has alright music. Its not epic, and nothing like blizzard. Blizzard are geniuses when it comes to music. Check out the SC2 music, it has some great songs. Again, its not bad for swtor, and does have some good music but not what you would expect from a game that tried to make it seem they put a lot into music. Whoever they hired, they should not hire again.

Pvp is only really arenas (3vs3) and WZ (8vs8). YOu will enjoy that for a while... but no large BG's... ever. The game engine was not desinged for that according to their own admission. They did not realize when designing an MMO it would end up having large groups doing stuff. Who knew? /s

But, I did enjoy the combat, and the story (companion story as well).

Without starting a point by point on what is not good... for what you are looking for, you will enjoy it for a while... that's if you havent tried it already... suprised if you haven't since its a great f2p game for a free try on the market... to bad the f2p ruins progressions and the amount of pvp, but if you subbed you would enjoy it more depending on what $15 is worth to you. Sometimes money makes people judge thigns differently.

It never had a good community overall, it was fine in small groups though.

    1) Good Music - Check

    2) Good community (record player needle scratches across the vinyl...)  Perhaps in your own guild...that's about it for most mmo video games...and yes, I play WoW.

    3)  Very good pvp...Dark Age of Camelot...yes...instanced battlegrounds that benefit not one person in your faction?  Not quite so much.

Sadly, I cannot think of a single title that has all three of those things.  Most have #1 though.

Rift is the most WoW-like game I can think of.  I liked its variety in talent setups and it's pvp.  I can't really judge the community as being good or not good, though, because I usually hung out with my guildies.

Why do people keep ragging on WoW's community? Perhaps things have changed a great deal since I played in vanilla, or maybe I was lucky and had a good server but I remember an awesome community.

Might just be because people needed each other more than in WoW's current form.

Haters gonna hate. I too have been on servers with really good communities.

SWTOR and Rift are the best but there's also Allods if you don't mind a grind. Allods has a really beautiful style and is very interesting. There's also Lord of the Rings Online.

This is in the wrong forum, but, Perfect World is extremely similar to WoW.  It is free + cash shop, though I do strongly recommend buying an inventory expansion stone for any character you are sure you like and are going to play past level 15 or 20.  You can buy cash shop currency with treasure in the auction house (assuming they haven't changed that since I played last) but on your first character you won't have enough to buy an inventory expansion stone until the lack of it has already driven you crazy for weeks.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

Sorry but there isn't a free mmo similar to WoW out there and i don't think that will change in the near future.

I will look into Wildstar when it comes out but that one ain't free.

A little history for folks who don't know...

    http://www.wowwiki.com/Tseric

    Read. Learn. Understand.

When you do come from a MMO community that is the definition of "nice and helpful" (as can be seen in MuDs, and EQII) to *that* -- no -- by any definition does WoW have a "good community". It's essentially a troll, backbiting and ninjaing community, with the mouths to go with it.

When they tell you to turn chat off (even guild chat), they don't say it as a joke. And that's not what a MMO is about /ignoring at least half the game!

    i had a rant about SWTOR's Free-to-Play model. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/402379/Anyone-else-think-the-free-players-on-SWTOR-are-restricted-too-much.html

There are tons: WoW set the standard that many copy.  I'm currently loving SWTOR.

A great list of free games (mostly MMORPGs): http://www.mytop10games.com/

WoW  + good community, this guy must be trolling.

Fine, we'll compromise. I'll get my way & you'll find a way to be okay with that.

I'm surprised no one suggested Allods Online. It's about as WoW copy as can be without getting sued by Blizzard.
  • evilastroevilastro Member Posts: 4,270

Allods, Rift or Runes of Magic.

Rift has the best payment model but the graphics aren't really like WoW and the world is a bit dull.

Allods is probably closest in appearance, but is a bit of a cash grab, unless you do the sub model.

Runes of Magic is a total cash grab and to be honest is a bit crap, but its close to WoW and free to try.

That was what struck me, those are the two things it have always been lacking in my experience with WoW. That, and now it is easy mode hand holding however, I digress.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

It's not like that anymore, but it kind of never really was. The only good community you will find is mostly within your guild, that small, tight-knit server community thing that a lot of Asian MMOs tend to have doesn't really exist in WoW and (from my personal experience) never really existed. I played CoH for a long time and a lot of people from there put me off from playing WoW (saying  the community was bad). It wasn't until BC that I finally tried it out, and yeah the community wasn't as close and tight-knit as CoH or anything, but if you found a guild or a small group of friends to play with you didn't really have to worry about that. Playing with random people was a nightmare though, I think because you have a larger pool of players and thus more potential of getting a Johnny McMouthbreather in your group. I'm not really sure, but outside of small groups WoW has always had a pretty terrible community from my experience.

Anyway OP, like other said, try Rift. It has a pretty good community from my experience and it's similar to WoW, kind of.

SWTOR does have good music and the game mechanics are just like WoW, but in order to really enjoy it you do have to treat it as a P2P game. You pretty much have to pay the sub to not get a gimped game. Now for anyone willing to pay, it is a perfectly good game and possibly even excellent is you really like the stories and leveling alts. But if you really are stuck looking for a free game then... not so much. But it does have the good starwarsy music.

Another game with excellent music and an ok f2p model is Aion. To be competitive you will need to grind for a long time but in principle you can do it free. If you want to hit the pvp sooner rather than later then you will feel the pressure to spend. But it really depends on you and your spending habits. Flying pvp is pretty darn fun though. And the music is top notch. Also the graphics, costuming, architecture is excellent. The game has a very good aesthetic. But really the music is some of the absolute best in the industry.

I would have also suggested Rift but it looks like you have tried that. Excellent F2P model though and great graphics.

Have you tried GW2? Great music. Great graphics. Wonderful world. I didn't like the "no roles" style of action combat, I think it makes the PvE side suffer greatly but some people love it and it works fine for WvW PvP. You do have to buy the box but then it is a cash shop game from there. But the cash shop is reasonably well designed.

Just as an outlier I will mention EQ2. The music is good. the graphics are ok, bit dated but not horrible. Lot and lot of content. And I mean lots. Lots of features. of course plays much like having come out the same month. huge number of races and classes, dwarfs almost any other game in that regard. Bit weak on PvP but there is some. Mostly it is a PvE game. But perhaps most notably, the best community of any game I have ever played. Maybe its because EQ2 has been the MMO underdog for so long. But absolutely great people.

    All die, so die well.
