Lord of the Rings Online: UPDATED: No New Dungeons in 2014 - Plans Focused on Revamps

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

According to a post at ContainsModeratePeril.com, Lord of the Rings Online players aren't going to be treated to any new dungeons in the near future, as a part of the design team's dedication to revisiting the existing world in 2014. Compiled from a chat script, Community Manager Sapience confirmed the rumor and further confirmed that no server merges are planned at this time.

That does not however mean there's no new content being added to LotRO in the future. The story reported elsewhere seems to be taken out of context, when for more information on what Turbine's 2014 for LotRO looks like, you need only see Katie Paiz' post on the official forums.

There's plenty of bread left in Frodo's lembas bag, folks.

This is really sadam news. I think is time to leve middle earth.

I think it was stated in one of the "questions-answers" article before HD, so it's more like a confirmation. I'm a bit more worried about the housing part, if they start over the discussion thread, then we won't have a revamp in the next 6 months...

For the event itself, it was the second (or maybe 3rd?) hobbit escorting, and Gilrain finished it pretty quickly. Can't wait it on my main :) Too bad we don't have this kind of activities since Turbine stole us from Codies, back in those days there were regular GM-events on the servers, and those were always fun.

    Such a shame.

Vanilla and first expansion were the best. Memorable experience with world that was one of the best MMOs could offer. After Moria they started heavily focus towards casual crowd and solo play till they stopped making any group content at all.

    Good times.

The license is up this year. Makes sense they're not adding new content.

This was my favorite MMO. It will be missed once they pull the plug.

I agree this game had so much potential at launch, was and has been one of my favorite mmo's to date. I hate the direction they took this game in though, too many instances, a lack of meaningful progression, horrid content releases, and absolutely no development or improvement into the pvp system.

Just the fact you could be in Middle Earth was enough to make this game one of the longest mmo subscriptions I've ever had. Tis a shame it became a mess, I hope someone else picks up the IP and does better.

Indeed. I think we will hear of the shutdown by second quarter.

I agree with nttajira. I feel bad for those who bought "lifetime" subs.

You guys are reading into this wrong.  They are saying 'no TRADITIONAL instances and raids' are planned. As in, they are focusing on the big battles instead.  They said long ago that this expansions content would be delivered as big battles because that was the best way to portray the Helms Deep conflict.

Its a design choice, its not them saying that they wont be releasing any new content this year, they are just saying there will be no instances or raids in the traditional sense.

For all the naysayers, they still have a lot of people playing the game with a lot of them subbing.  Too profitable to close the game any time soon.

I think its great news.my god how many dungeons do u need in a game.there are loads.from raid skirmishes to raid dungeons to six and three man dungeons.i would rather they concentrate on good story content myself.

Personally I no longer play LOTRO and could fault Turbine's development and handling of the game on many many counts, but lack of instanced dungeons / raids would not be one of them. An excessive emphasis on such (at least later on in the life of the game, I wasn't playing until some time post Mirkwood) maybe . . .

I've been playing for years and I can honestly say that the change to the skills tree was a horrid idea. It completely bound your hands when it came to making "your character" yours. Now everyone plays the same character with the same skills with the same progression... it ruined the feel of the game for most of us that have played for along time. I hope that Turbine changes it back and makes better decisions about what the players want in a game.

The reason they changed the skills was because there was so little variation within classes.  Too many jack of all trades, and not enough specialisation.  Not sure how you could compare the two systems and conclude that the older system gave you more choices?

That does not matter if it is like some say and the license run out... Without a renewed license they can not do anything apart from shutting it down.

But i agree it is smart to not start any big development projects before they know if the license is renewed. It is a fair bet that if that happens a fairly good roadmap will be put forth asap in order to drum up more/new interest.

This have been a good conversation

Lotro was "wowized" even tho there are no longer talent trees in WoW. The new system forces players into one of the three "cookie cutter" roles. The talent trees are totally useless and there is no variation within them, they could have just make you choose the specialization at level 10 without the trees at all. They ADD no variation, TALENT trees are the thing of the PAST, please let it rot. This was a huge step BACKWARDS. There are so many GOOD systems that could replace the previous LOTRO character development, but talent trees are NOT ONE OF THEM.

    REALITY CHECK

The new tree system has made the burg, loremaster, and warden not needed or wanted in raids.  We all have the same build for sure now, red, yellow, or blue line.  Vanilla characters with less abilities.

No, they were updating the game 5x more when they weren't owned by WBs and the license wasn't almost up. Or do I need to point out DDO to you? Not that it would matter since you will always toss out anything that refutes your stance on F2P.

I hope this is actually their plan because I agree with you about the best way to portray HD. I would like more skirmishes too. Those are fun.

Please see the updated news story at the beginning of the thread and the news article link.

It's definitely blown out of proportion. We reported the story because we saw several big news outlets doing so, but upon further investigation and after talking to Turbine, we realize this line of the chat was completely taken out of context.

having read this again on the forum there was something mentioned about a possible big surprise that may be possible due to class changes .I hope that means another class.also I like the ideas that have been put forward about sorting over inventory, housing and free content for vip's.I would rather they do this anyday than add more dungeons.

Completely amazing that I can read an article and not leap to the end of the world conspiracy theories everyone here seems to be doing.

Do you read what you want or the actual words in the article?

    You stay sassy!

This was my first MMO and I bought lifetime sub in 2007 so I got my moneys worth a long time ago. Just been collecting turbine points monthly and buying the expansions with them. I would hate to see the game and my beaver masked Character go even if I do not play it anymore.
