If PC gaming is ever going to die, it's because everyone is only ever (badly) porting it from some other plattform, instead of making a real pc game. Mostly user interface and (camera) control issues, but the power of a high end pc could also be taken advantage of. Everyone focuses so much on visuals, yet they don't make us of high end PCs allowing them to go all out.
Oh, and of course people claiming PC gaming is dead every second day don't help, either, though they are rather irrelevant overall.
I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
PC gaming will only die once PC's become a rarity, and that day is still a few years away.
However, I can understand that certain kinds of developers/publishers consider PC gaming to be "dead", given that there is vastly more potential profit in consoles and mobile gaming. Both of the latter are growing markets too, whereas the PC market is in slow decline.
It's that same million people that buy every indie thing on PC. Is a million, or even 10 million dedicated PC gamers enough when consoles will likely have a few hundred million in a few years?
They are slowly getting to that point, you can already customize the crap out of them. I have never done it but I have heard of being able to add memory, ram, change fans etc.
I think the only thing really holding them back is the every 4 year sell another console trend we have going on. aIf it becomes cost efficient for people to upgrade the graphics and everything themselves without the companies missing out on the fund generated by this trend then we will see it.
The new "NexGen" Consoles being woefully underpowered and completely unable to take advantage of all the new 4k technology (hell, they struggle with 1080p at 60hz) that's hitting the shelves at the beginning of their life cycle puts PC gaming in a really good place.
In fact, it's the only reason I haven't completely written off Steambox.
They aren't underpowered for their price point. Show me a PC that can do everything a PS4 or Xbox One can for $500. I'm not defending the death of PC gaming crowd because that's absurd and PCs will always be strong for gaming possibly more so than consoles in the coming years, I'm just saying consoles aren't exactly bad off either. There's also much more of an ease of access with console hardware both on developers end (they can program specifically for console hardware) and user end (it's much easier to install a game and not having hardware conflicts and issues).
Hardware isn't really that important either as most people wouldn't know the difference between 720 and 1080p unless they saw pictures side by side and for both sides it's all about the games.
Didn't say they were, but they are underpowered for the next step in display tech... Which is already on the precipice of mainstream. 4k TVs are already coming out under $1k, in 2 years they'll be standard.
If hardware isn't important than why even bother upgrading consoles at all? There is a pretty big difference between 1080p and 2160p. If you can buy a steambox 2 years from for 4-500$ and utilize 4k resolutions while also benefiting from steam sales to save tons on games... are you really going to stick with your PS4 or Xbox?

That is just patently incorrect. The only difference to the human eye will be very subtle and only barely noticeable on screen sizes over 100 inches.
The average Joe and his 50 inch inch display will not discern any difference whatsoever. In any case that resolution increase will have little to no efect on a players enjoyment of a particular game. I can just see players howling now "this 1080P image is so muddy and washed out I can barely play the game!!" ROFL!!
Again it seems people will clutch at any straws to belittle the consoles.

This must be why nobody bothers to buy 1080p TVs, because the difference between 720p is barely noticable(an lets ignore the fact that 4k resolutions are literally double 1080p, not the 25% margin than 1080p is over 720p). Except the market is overflowing with 1080p displays... so I guess average Joe is just stupidly buying something he can't even notice, right? Even if that is the case, he's still buying the damn things which is all that matters.
I also hear a company called Apple is doing pretty well in sales with their retina displays.
I'm sorry, but your argument doesn't hold up to market trends or common sense.
The fact of the matter is, 2-3 years from now your going to be presented with the choice of a 4k capable console at a higher price point; which is modular and doesn't lose backwards compatibility with games... and has game sales that will cover the cost of the higher price point within a years time. Why in the fuck would you buy a current generation console under those conditions?

When people can upgrade them instead of having a locked ancient piece of hardware that holds back the rest of the gaming world.
They just were upgraded or hadn't you noticed?
Plus for the price of about a high end graphic card you will be able to upgrade them again. Upgrading is hardly an issue here.
No. they never were upgraded they were replaced.
I can't take my ps3 games an play them on a ps4 now can i?
Oh and that is somehow different from replacing 75% of a PC when you do a serious upgrade? I hardly think so.
And no you can't play your PS3 games now. The PS4 games are new games. You can still play them on your PS3 though unless you sold it. In which case the games probably went too. So what was your point again?

I think the point is that some people want to be able to want to be able to play all of their old games without having to hang on to every piece of hardware we have ever owned. With a PC you can do that. You cannot do that with a console. If your first console was the PS3 that isn't a big issue, if your first console was the Atari 2600 that is probably more hardware than most people want to keep lying around. I can still play my old DOS games on my newest PC without a hitch.

Believe it or not, I do have a PC, I get that part. Thats nice that you can run your old DOS stuff without a hitch. I tried to reload Age of Mythology on Win 7 PC and guess what? No luck. I spent a good hour or so looking for fixes and what not but could not come up with anything that worked. Quite disappointing actually.
Good points and bad points to both systems. But always the PC guys ragging about the consoles . Never the other way around. Why is that I wonder? Never mind, I know.
Oh and PS: my first console was the Atari , wish I hadn't gotten rid of the damn thing LOL! I miss my old Sega and Road Rash too!

Source? I highly doubt only 32million units of PC games sold globally by any means.
vgchartz.com
I don't think anyone would doubt that there is more money in consoles than pcs.
That website deals 90% in consoles, and the numbers you quote are changes year-on-year, not totals. Google other sources and you'll find a plethora of other numbers for the market.
In any case, I think the "PC" is indeed dying, or maybe even dead, in the sense that now tablets/smartphones are taking over casual tech users, while computers are either used in professional tasks or gaming/entertainment.
PC Gaming however, is still very high and mighty. To be fair, playing an RTS or a MOBA on a console is shockingly inefficient, and even FPS games are tedious. And these groups of games account for a good portion of the genre. I'll admit that Action, Adventure, Platformers and even RPGs work like a charm on consoles, and my PS3 and PS4 have a very well established spot in my living room running GoW, AC4, Last of Us, etc. However, I'll never abandon my PC, with all its complexity in Civ5, Starcraft 2, and the occasional Black Ops 2.
I wouldn't call it dead. My point was only that the money is in consoles, which is why you don't see as many epic pc games any more. And therefore when something like Day Z comes along, everyone jumps on it. Its more profitable to develop a console game, get your millions, then port it to PC to get a bonus million. The result is mostly what we get is crappy ports, Crysis, Far Cry, Dead Space, Dues Ex.

Pretty much this. Compatibility is one of the big things holding consoles back. Another is the "black box" and lockdown.

I think this article is really to commemorate the 25th anniversary of "Death of PC Gaming" statements and articles by the "Press".
I look forward to the next 25 years!!!
